Picked up my wetsuit last night. Was going to swim either today or sat but the water quality is posted as unsafe. So will swim in the 14 m pool this afternoon. Legs are better today.

I've just switched to 12 hour shifts and it's been rough on the training.  I work noon-midnight so I have to get up early to get the training in.  It's hard to roll out of bed after a long night at work with the prospect of another long night looming.  On the plus side, I only work three days then I'm off for three.  I can mostly get caught up on sleep and training on my off days.  Now...if only the magical gnomes would come and clean my house and go to the grocery for me, I'd be in good shape!

Don't worry, you get used to 12's after a little bit.  I do 3 on 4 off (every Fri, Sat, Sun) and so I am the at home parent during the week with the baby, and my wife does the at home stuff on the weekends.  It cuts into our time together, but it more than makes up for it with the $ we save on daycare.

In other news, my race today went well, and I even met another BTer, which puts me up to...2 that I've met.  And kudos to ndeyoung, BTer who got 2nd in her group.  Next race in 6 weeks, and I hope to do much better.  Race report hopefully tonight from work.

Merry maids. Absolutely worth it.

John

Already spending money on a boy to cut the grass.  Don't think I can afford a boy to clean the toilets, too.

I've worked 12s in the past - it's just been awhile.  It should be easier in a few weeks - they're just overworking me a bit right now.  One person trying to do the job of two.

Glad you had a good race!  Looking forward to the race report.

So, I headed out for my run a bit late (8:50am), and it was already 90 degrees. 4 miles later, I discover that my belt bottle has bounced out somewhere. So, my run was a bit fugly towards the end, 9.19 miles in 1:15, and I was so done I had to stop at the 8ish mile mark and suck wind under a tree.

Lost 8.5 lbs in one run, trying to figure out if that is good or bad...

Note to self: Sleeping in on the weekends does have its price. I do have a long sleeve drifit shirt on the way that is supposed to help, so we'll give that a try and see what happens.

Congrats on the racing!!

Yeah, but it's a DRY heat...

It's been hot here in the Midwest as well.  Up in the 90s with that high stinking humidity.  I ended up running in just the shorts and jog bra the other night.  My shorts were actually dripping sweat by the time I got done.  Tres sexy.

It's super hot and humid here too. It's really gross here in the summer - SO sticky. I work with a girl from Atlanta who says that even though it gets hotter there, it's way worse here because of all the humidity. Same thing in the winter - people who live up North, where it can hit 40 below (and that's Celcius), say that it feels much colder here due to the dampness.

So I run at night! I just came in from 5 great miles. Love a summer evening breeze.

Hi guys!
It went really well. At the venue it said I came in 2nd in my age group- but chiptime now has me as 5th out of 19 in my age group.
Now, if I had entered in the Athena then I would of come 1st - by 7 minutes and 39 people. But that's what you get for being vain.
Best part was I was 51st person in the water and 22nd to come out. But then my biking and running set me back bigtime.
I'll post a race report today.

Hi guys. Update on my rank. So I did come in 2nd out of 6 in my age group (35 - 39). This is the group they work out the points. But then they worked the medals/podium out based on 30 - 39yrs and that's were my rank dropped to 5th. Still, 5th out of 19 is not bad.

Congrats everyone on their successful weekend of racing.  I've got mine in 3 weeks.  Managed to do a course preview today with a good friend.  The bike and run went well, but the swim is definitely lacking.  I can see I need to get in a couple more OWS of similar distance before the event.

Total approximate time for a 1/2 mile swim, 18.5 mile bike and 4.5 run was just under 2 1/2 hours.  This just proved to me that I can do it, but I do need a little more prep.  If interested, I've updated my training to reflect today with further comment.

Same for me.  Don't get me wrong, I love reading my own race reports (I wish the times were faster though) but I'd enjoy reading the rest of the group's stuff too.

In other news, guess which mentee will no longer be riding a Target special MTN bike for their races?  I got the OK from Mrs Chad today.  Well, not so much an OK, more of a "I'm tired of listening to you talk about it, I will eventually break down and say "fine" because you'll guilt me into it, and if you can't afford it I'll laugh at you when the repo man comes to get it.  So go buy the stupid thing already."

Chad 1, Mrs Chad 0.  Although I'm sure I'll pay for it in the end.  Especially for my well placed "Just think honey, it will be like when I bought you that $1500 ring on my birthday 2 years ago.  I paid for it out of my money, and it didn't impact the family budget at all"

And guys, if you really want to catch a woman off guard, buy her something really nice and shiny when it's YOUR birthday.  It's like a "get a bike whenever you want it" card.  ^_^

Well done on the bike talk/win. So you obviously liked racing enough to want to buy one.

During the bike portion of my race I was not liking being passed at all (competitive streak announced itself after being dormant for a while). And I had to tell myself that I in fact liked what I was doing - because my body was not liking it. But the end made it all worth it and I drove home with a big smile on my face.

Has anyone else had moments where they were not liking it during a race - questioning what you are doing? I sometimes feel like this when I'm skiing - where I have to remind myself that I like it. And I do love it a  lot.

Ok, for those that don't know, Mrs. John competes at a very high level in Irish Dance. (Been to Worlds twice). This Friday is her last ever Nationals competition, since she is getting her teaching certification for ID and won't be able to compete anymore.

She has one last competitive goal, and this is her last chance, so if all of you could put some serious good will in the air Friday morning it would be great! I'll be in Nashville doing the whole support crew thing, so I may be off the waves for a few days.

If you feel comfortable and you like it during a race, then you aren't going fast enough.

I get that even during some of my intense workouts, about 1/2 way through I'll hear my couch and a beer calling, and I wonder what I'm doing. But, the feeling afterwards makes it ALL worthwhile.

I'm pretty sure I've hated every single race I've ever done while I was doing it.   But, somehow, once the race is over I'm convinced that I just had the most awesome time ever.  So I keep signing up for races.  I think they're putting addictive chemicals in the water. It's the only logical explaination.

I know what you mean.  I knew at my race that if I went as hard as I possibly could, my run would suffer too much, and that there was no way I was going to keep up with guys on legit bikes while I was on a Target MTN bike.  Also, my bike portion was a 3 lap out and back, so there were all sorts of people passing everyone.  I swear a peloton went by me at one point.  Also some jokester made this scenario happen...

Chad: Stupid MTN bike, I hate you.
Fast Guy 1: On your left!
Fast Guy 2: On his left!
Fast Guy 3: What they said!

But I did enjoy most of my race, and having never done one before, and still trying to figure out what my pacing needs to be, I'm sure I held back a bit too much.  My race in August will be better though.

Oh, and good luck to Mrs. John!  I hope she does super great.
