Stanley, sorry to hear about the cramping.  Seems to be a big issue for a lot of people...I wonder what is causing it?  Great to see you enjoyed your Oly and had a good time and good results all things considering.  Congrats!

I plan to get back in the game today.  The gastro doc can't get me in for about 3 weeks, so I will just have to deal with it and keep an eye on the pain in the mean time.  I am ready to get started again.  I've been eating better and sleeping well so now it's time to get the workouts going.  I'll be doing a better job of checking up on everyone too...kinda not been on the computer much.

congrats on completing your 1st oly!

oh boy, cramps are killers for me.  my advice from experience is that cramping is caused more by electrolyte depletion than inadequate stretching.  hydration pre-race should include electrolyte drink (cytomax works great for me but there are many to chose from...) in addition to plain water.  make sure you consume some salty nutrition on the ride and drink both water and an electrolyte replenisher.  i also take magesium supplements on a regular basis.  this routine has made a huge difference in  a chronic problem i had with leg/foot cramping for years; i swear by it.

tim, nice to hear that you're getting back into the game; i hope the pain disappears.  might be a good idea to take it slowly at first Wink

i have some work to do on my swim before the september tri.  but, this is news to nobody, right???

Stanley - You're an animal! Way to stick with it even though you were hurting.  I can't wait to read your RR!

trying1 - 2009-07-27 7:17 AM I just got back from my first Olympic and boy am I tired.  I'm not sure how people do HIM or IM!

I'll have the full race report up by tomorrow but in short.  The swim was pretty good, i was surprised about the time since I swerved a bit and all the traffic.. 20min 1 sec (1:12 per something this is from the official race results).  Weird thing was during the long run to T1 both my legs completely cramped, this was unusual since i had such a long time period off.  As soon as my legs cramped I knew I was in trouble for the run and possibly the bike.  T1 took me almost 8 min because i had the cramping issues and thus had trouble getting the wetsuit off.  The bike was surprisingly good as well.  I was cramping on the bike too but I tried to stretch as much as possible during the ride.  Lots of long climbs but lots of downhills too.  I avg 18.8 (computer said i was 19.5) and I know I could have done better if I didn't have the cramping issue.  There were some crashes too, the road ways were pretty narrow and a few sharp technical turns with so many bikers.  T2 was also long due to full leg cramps in both legs again..  I had problems putting on my shoes.  The run was brutal.  I knew this was going to be tough considering my leg injury and not running for awhile but the problems seemed to be related more to all the cramping going on.  I ran walked the whole thing and avg around 11min miles.  2:30min-3 min slower than I typically run on the same course.  Overall I had fun, I'm confused about the legs cramping after the swim because I hydrated well a few days before the race and I'm happy I hit my time mark, under 3 hrs (but barely).

Alright group!  I am back from Lake Placid and....I GOT IN!  I can't believe I have a full distance race in less than a year.  I had SUCH an amazing time and I hope to post as much as possible in my blog as soon as possible. =)  I look forward to catching up on all of your training!

Thanks everyone.

The cramps were truly a freak thing.  I hydrated very well (maybe too well) days before the race (with electrolyte drinks as well) and ate 2 banana's a few hrs before the race.  I never cramped like that after a swim.  A few people suggested I over hydrated and may not have used my legs enough during the swim as they heard that happening to people before.

Anyway this is the RR.

Great job Cindy!  I'm sure you'll have no problem at all with the swim in Sept.  I still think the first one is always the hardest.  Congrats!

I don't think Jessica has but correct me if I'm wrong.

My last tri of the year is 8/9...a little happy/a little sad.  But I need to focus more on running with the half marathon coming up.

Happy Hump Day everyone!

Nope, you're right! My first race (ever!) is next weekend. In the meantime I'm moving, and trying to get all my training time in.

Well, tomorrow is the last day of July (probably "today" when you all read this!").  It seems like we had a couple injuries and illnesses.  How's everyone feeling now?

I'm not sure if anyone has thought about it or worked on it, but did anyone improve on their 500 free/15?? mile bike/5k run???

Also, I'm *pretty* sure the mentor program will be coming to a close very, very soon.  Is there anything you guys want to get out of your mentor that you haven't seen yet?  I aim to please!!!

Second time through my half ironman training has been A LOT easier.  Part of it is because I am in better shape and am confident I can do all the distances.

I too am registered for IMPL.  I am soo excited and soooooo nervous about it.  Think it is going to be the fastest year of my life!

I talked to Kenj and Rstocks about having a BT tent at the race and we may get marmadaddy to send us a banner to stick on a tent to have a meeting point (some clubs have a grill for the families to cook out during the day).

I'm stoked about LP but nervous as well.  I just can't fathom running 26 miles after the bike (Caitlin Snow, a pro, ran a sub 3 hour marathon last Sunday! JEEZ!).  I think what I learned from HIM training is just to stay consistent. Get SOMETHING in and modify a workout around injuries.

My game plan is to train for the Philly Marathon (Nov 22) and then rest through December (well, strength train and light swimming/light biking) and then start in January training for LP.  I started my training a month early (used the free BT program) for my HIM and was bored at the end because I hadn't raced during the 6 months that I put in.

I think for us, other than getting in the training (which, Rstocks said it's worth sacrificing swim/run to get more time on the bike because those hills ARE challenging!) getting nutrition down is KEY.  I can't keep overhydrating during races and I can't rely on gels to get me through 12+ hours.  So, time to start packing PB&J sandwiches on the long rides and see how that works!

P.S.  Earlier in the mentoring I recommended that someone ditch their wetsuit during a sprint tri and I don't remember if I retracted that statement.  At our OWS we figured out that saving 9-15 seconds/100 yards was well worth the time it takes to get the wetsuit off!

you are gonna be great!  add some raisins to those pb&j sandwiches and just plain ol' raisins and add some salty snackfood like pretzels; they will be really dry to eat but wash them down with an electrolyte/carb drink or a protein-based drink and your body will be happier.  it sounds disgusting but definitely adds some much needed fuel that goes beyond the convenience of gels.  don't forget the bananas and apples Smile

Question to the group: Anyone use Wii Fit??  I just started using ours yesterday. I'm wondering what you think.  How well do you think it gauges your fitness?
