What gearing is everyone using (front/rear)? Thanks, Brian Totally unexperienced with hills and I am quickly learning that my 53/39 & 12-23 are no going to cut it. My plan at this point is to throw on a 12-27 and try it out. If I need a little more I will add the compact crank as well. Man, these Ironman's always end up more expensive then I plan |

Thanks, Brian 50/34 and 11-28. I went to get a 12-27 but the shop didn't have one so they convinced me to go with an 11-28. Every little bit helps on the hills I suppose! I'm an average rider and wasn't likely to ever use the 12 so going to an 11 didn't make a difference to me. I'm heading up to Madison this weekend to get some ride time on the course so hopefully my current set-up is good to go come race day. |

Extreme Veteran 476 WI | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Are we slackers or just training harder than those IMLP folks who have over 120 message pages? I prefer the "training" answer. Heading into what should shape up as a great training weekend - end of a recovery week and going into a taper for CapView Tri. Looking forward to my first "long" brick of 3hr bike/30min run. I didn't want to start that craziness with the 4hr bike and 90 min run on separate days last weekend. Nursing a tweaked back - could be stress related. |

Extreme Veteran 476 WI | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Gregkl - 2010-05-31 2:18 PM Ok, I pulled the trigger on the Madison OWS on 8/21. I got a room at the Hampton Inn on Commerce Pkwy. I wanted use motel points and this one was as close in as I could get. Hopefully it will be a good location for the bike ride. Now, it would be really cool if a group of us could get together that weekend for some swimming and riding! My training plan calls for 1.5 hours of swimming and 6 hours of riding. I might be up for a "brick". I'm signed up for the 2.4mi w/ wetsuit. I've got a 5hr bike scheduled that day as well. However, I am doing either 50+ mile or 98 mile course of the Dairyland Dare the weekend before. So I may be shot or feeling great. |

Extreme Veteran 476 WI | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread crea0029 - 2010-05-25 7:55 PM Sounds wonderful... gotta love algae blooms! Does anyone know of a good swimming lake in the Madison area that doesn't have algae problems... especially closer to race day? Fireman's Park out in Verona...nice little city park lake - not sure if there is a fee or not. I've been out to Fireman's Park to do the bike course. I noticed they close before September. Can you swim even when the lake is not officially open ie lifeguards and the building there? Supposedly you are not supposed to swim there when it's closed, but I think Verona turns a blind eye to all the people using it during off hours. There are training groups/classes that use it so I assume they have to get permission from the city. I also heard that when it is open you cannot swim outside the buoy line. In general, yes you can swim there when it's closed and if someone would kick you out that would be a first. I don't know what the water is like in Sept. The open area gets too closed in with weeds/algae by July to make it worthwhile - unless you want to swim 3-4 minute loops. |

Nursing a tweaked back - could be stress related. That race is in less than two months so it's pretty active over there! It's certainly not for lack of training. There have been a lot of really good, helpful discussions, especially for first timers. On the gearing, I did it with a compact and 12-27 last year and it was perfect, I'm using that same gearing for IMLP and IMWI. It works great on both courses. |

I swore I read that someplace. I could be on crack though and just not remember correctly. that's why I said "the old Gatorade swims"...as in extinct... I know the organized swims are extinct, but does anyone know if they are allowing solo swims at the venue prior to the race, at your own risk? I emailed Ironman Wisconsin and their response was: " The 2010 Ford Ironman Wisconsin swim course is open to the public prior to the event. Please let me know if you have any additional questions." I'm in as well. Not sure what my coach has on tap for me as we don't plan that far out. I'm guessing it will be the full 2.4 swim, 5 hour ish ride and some type of run afterwards. I think we are going to use it as race simulation. I'm also doing the full Dairyland Dare the weekend before. I think I should just move to Wisconsin for the summer |

Regular 109 Madison, Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread So something about 20 mph west winds got "go ride the course today" into my head. Fare warning to those riding this weekend. Heavy rains and HUGE potholes are on Sugar River Road. This is the second big hill after Verona. I missed the potholes but hit a bunch of gravel at 30mph. That gave me a good pucker. Hopefully the townships fill the plethora of holes along the course. |

I have been hearing a lot of horror stories from people riding the course that the roads are getting pretty bad in areas and they have yet to address them. Hopefully there is money in the budgets (ha ha) to get some road work done in the next few weeks. |

Middleton turned down building a bike lane on Old Sauk due to funding....I rode the course last week and didn't think the potholes were any worse than last year. Of course, they sucked last year too. PS I agree 99 days seems way too close...I'm thinking over three months to go! |

1 | Subject: music used in the 2009 athlete video? Last year, Wisconsin was my first full Ironman. At the post-race meeting, they had the athlete & volunteer videos, which were awesome. Especially the music. But when my husband downloaded them from the website, they changed all the music! Does anybody know the songs they used for the 2009 athlete video? I remember they used "Closer to Fine" for the bike portion, but I don't remember the others. -Marci |

Extreme Veteran 427 St. Louis, MO | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Another IMWI 2010 Training Opportunity: OKAY BT-Nation! I am sending out a reminder for the Dairyland Dare/Verona loop cycling "Camp" that I am presenting as part of my coaching service "Ironbrick Training". I have rooms blocked out in Verona but space is somewhat limited....I've made arrangements for water and a porta potty on the Verona Loop and obviously the Dairyland Dare is a supported ride........ The camp will include a bit of "classroom time" on Sat evening to review race strategy and do a Q&A about what to expect at IMWI. I have volunteered there enough times to have seen plenty of examples of good and bad plans/executions so let me help you plan for a great race! Details of "camp' are on my website: http://ironbricktraining.com/CampInformation.aspx Low key....good chance to ride the tricky part of the course as well as put down some serious miles the day before...... Hope to see you there! |
