Dragonflyer - 2010-01-21 10:05 AM Anyone do beach running?  Leaving on a vacation in less than 2 weeks for an island--we will be there for 2 weeks, plan on really up my training then.  Nice long swims, plenty of dirt roads for running (heard beach running is a good work-out)  also we have a couple of mountain bike there--so should be covered in all areas.  Going to get a taste of the good life for a while and forget all the cares of the world for a short time.   We have the use of my sister in-laws house for the entire time-so with the added sun I should be able to put in the extra time I need before the Spring races start-time to push myself.  Also looking for hints on open water swim-especially open ocean--only have rivers and lakes in my area so any useful advice will be appreaciated.  www.isleculebra.com

Nice!  Maybe we can all hide in your suitcase?  On beach running:  nothing beats it!  but word of caution:  If you are new to running and haven't built up all those little tendons, ligaments and muscle then make sure you take your mileage down when running on the sand.   It has less support than dirt trails and if your ankles aren't well trained they can get injured.  Yes...I speak from experience...unfortuneately.    But again I have to say...nothing beats running by the surf.

On ocean swimming:  Always good to have a partner with you but if you can't then swim parallel to the shoreline.  Its a lot different than lake or pond swimming.  The ocean has its own rythym and you just have to learn it.   Once you find the right groove, its heaven.....   Can you tell I like the beach?  And I live with the cold North Atlantic.    You will want to site often as the tide can move you about.    If you are heading straight out to find that sweet spot, dive under any waves, unless they are small.....trying to swim thru them can be an energy waster.

Most important!!!!!!!!!!Have fun!

Hey guys!! Just got back from working out.  I have noticed that my neck muscle are sore and give me a headache after swimming.  I am assuming that I am looking forward to much instead of down and straining the muscles.  Anyone else have these problems.  I already suffer from migraines and this isnt helping.

Cool,
there is nothing like running at the beach- you'll have the best time! I have to admit, I hate soft sand running, and as Serenity mentioned, there are a few physiological things you need to watch out for, like ankles and calves and achilles.
I ahve to admit, I usually run on the beach in my runners and stick to the hard sand near where the water is...I found this article on Runners World that has a couple of workout ideas- they sound like fun...
http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-263-266-8164-0,00...

Below as well a photo I've been meaning to post all week- taken on my bike ride last weekend from the point where you turn around (a place called Black Rock)- and one for you Melissa (top marks for guessing which is which)

Enjoy!

Good Morning.  Yes I am still alive.  I got back into town late Wednesday and yesterday was crazy with work and the kids.  My older one is sick and the little one had her second flu shot.  She is allergic to eggs so she needs to get the shot at the allergist and it takes over an hour.  My early morning workout plans were interrupted at 3am by my little one getting up and then my the other one at 5am screaming that his ear is falling off.  Best laid plans I guess.  Enough about my crazy week.

Looks like you guys are doing great.  Here are the current standings in our IM Challenge -

Hope everyone has a great weekend.  I'm heading out of town for a couple of days with the kids.  Hope to get a couple of good long runs in as well as a swim.  I should be able to finish off both the swim and run portion of our little challenge this weekend.  Now if only I could magically make myself enjoy getting on the blasted trainer to work on my biking....

LOL too funny!!! You know you could approach her in a loving manner when you are playing tennis with her and say something about the xmas tree or maybe she will beat you butt in tennis so you might not want that either!!!

Every have one of those days (weekends)  when you are better off putting the work outs on the back burner?  Ran yesterday-after just 1 mile it wasen't working for me.  Jumped on my trainer--ended up doing a short one--just need a couple of days off.

I so have those " not into it training days." Unfortunately, lately, I have not worked out at all, let alone tried. This has reminded me of an article I wrote about the 5 minute workout. The short version, if you do not feel like a workout, but also feel you should, give it a go. After 5 minutes, you will know for sure or get a decent workout in.

Feel free to take what you would like from the article and use it. I hope to impliment this plan again starting today!!

completely off topic, I had just a little too much time on my hands today. Checked to see that the newest member on our team registered in November last year. Good mix of first year, slightly seasoned and old farts like me Now all I have to do is keep up with you guys

Yes, you are not seeing things, I have actually exercised 2 days in a row.  I went to the gym last night to at about 8pm.  It was dead there.  Nice and quiet.  I liked it.  Went out for a run today, if you can even call it a run.  I am going to have to cut my distance down a bit until my ankle strengthens up.  I have at least figured out a schedule, which I will be starting on Monday.  I am looking forward to it.  Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Great article.  I think I have read this before or heard someone else mention it, because I always think of the 5 minute rule when I don't want to get by butt off the couch.  It works most of the time, but there are definitely times nothing will help with the motivation.  Best to do is rest physically and mentally for another day.

Glad too see that I am not the only one not getting any workouts in the past few days. I attempted a pool swim last night but a combination of an open/family swim time and a basketball game at the school the same night made for a pool workout not likely. I looked at the young lady doing the sign in sheet and then looked at about 100 kids in the pool and we had a good laugh at trying to workout through all those kids. O well try again Sunday.

i was thinking i was the only slug .. and other self-loathing thoughts because i did not work out after winning my amazing trophy - ha ha.  it is good to see that  others seem to battle with motivation.  my goal is consistency still.  i just got back from short 1.75 mile run and need to run 12 miles tomorrow to keep up with training for half marathon march 7th.

i logged my run today in challenge.  the percentage did not automatically populate field so i entered manually.  i am thinking that because data is in all different formats we will always need to populate percentage field manually. is this correct?

.... last week an 84 year old female (colleague of mine) completed the 5K and finished before some of the 20 year olds ... now that is truly inspiring!!

Thanks all!!  I feel so much better now for not doing much of a work--out!!!  Haha  sounds like it's motivational time once again for myself.  All I need to do is put some good music on and look around Beginner Tri.   Can hardly wait for the morning in order to get into my work out clothes and take off for the gym.  But first-it's time for beer and a dash out in the back yard--20 degrees but the hot tub feels great under the stars.   See you all in the morning
