jgerbodegrant - 2010-02-01 8:20 AM Morning all!  I wanted to share that I am officially an uncle.  My niece Alex May, 10 lbs, 8 oz of pure linebacker was born on Friday.  She's a cute "little" thing for sure.

On the other hand....I had two horrible workouts this weekend and am hoping this week will prove to be better!

Have a great day!

Awww, congratulations on becoming an uncle! 10 lbs!  Wow!

OK-here's one for you guys-"aqua jogging".  Did it yesterday for the first time to try to maintain some run fitness since I am still having problems with my right leg.  Found a series of workouts online with sets of easy/hard intervals.  Was able to get my HR up during "hard" intervals to where I typically am for a really easy run.  Down side it is unbelievably BORING. Anyone done this before?  Good low impact workout and I will try to do 3-4 workouts a week until I am back running.  I did it staying in basically one spot in about 5 feet of water-but I think there are different options on how to do it.  Really lessened the impact on the legs.  Just curious if anyone else has tried it.  Fortunately it was quiet at the pool as I was self conscious about my new workout-felt like I should have been wearing a swim cap with daisies on it to match the senior ladies water aerobics group.

Never tried it, hope it helps you get back on the road again.
Have you tried the elliptical machines? They are low impact.

I have never tried it but I have taught high intensity water aerobics classes - we do most of  it in the deep end. That being said  I teach it from the deck

I am a huge fan of the elliptical...just check out my logs and you will see how much time I spend on it   I have used it through all of my injuries..low impact and matains a high fitness level.

I like the elliptical as a low impact alternative to running when my surgically repaired right knee gets sore.  Was hoping to use the elliptical as a substitute for running while recovering but when I did a workout last week it caused significant flare up of sciatic nerve type of pain down my leg.  Same problem with biking right now.  It is getting better but between increased swimming and the aqua slogging I feel like a fish-if only I could swim like one!  Thanks for the suggestions though.

Yes, the dreaded "aqua jogging" --- far more tedious even than the dreadmill.  Four years ago I had a stress fracture and was sentenced to six weeks of no impact exercise. At the time I did not belong to a gym with a pool, so my doctor gave me a three-week pass to a really great facility with a deep "therapy" pool.  There were quite a few other people there doing the same thing, so at least there was a bit of a group element.

But after three weeks I had to find another pool. The closest, most economical option was a pool at a retirement center a mile from my home. Really nice pool, hardly got any use. The one catch was that you had to be over age 55 to use the pool.  A friend of my mom's who happened to live in the retirement center talked to the director and found a loophole whereby I could sign up for a "water aerobics" class.  I could only use the pool while these classes were going on.  And yes, they wore swim caps with daisies!!!  They would hang out in the shallow end with their noodles while I trudged dutifully back and forth in the deep end doing my aqua jogging thing. Looking back, it was one of the strangest episodes in my running life.

Busy weekend. BSG 5K trail run Saturday morning. Saturday night have to chaperon for a dance at church. There is also a snowboarding rails demo downtown Saturday night part of the BSG. I guess MTV is supposed to be there. Guess I will have to watch it on MTV since I will be at the dance.
Sunday after church going out for dinner for my mom's birthday.
Tonight going out for dinner for Valentine's Day, won't be able to go out next weekend since I am having my sinus surgery on Friday.

As you would expect, everyone down here on the Gulf Coast is pulling for the Saints.  Closest NFL team for us and there are  alot of folks locally that have season tickets.  Would be a huge boost for the city if the Saints won.

Weekend plans-try to get roof leak fixed-UGH! Watch daughter's high school soccer scrimmage; spend some more time in the pool swimming and aqua slogging-did get some zoomer fins and looking forward to trying those during kick sets.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Had my 5K trail run this morning. Great weather, 20F and the woods blocked any wind. The trail was snow covered but I used my shoes with the screws in the bottoms so no problem there. The problem was about 1/2 mile into the race when my asthma hit, all the problems I have been having with my sinuses has caused my asthma. I forgot to use my inhaler before I left the house, my chest was tight and I has to slow down in order to breathe. I ended up finishing is 30 minutes.

Lenny-way to hang in there.  How did the neck feel?  Too bad about the asthma.  I have some problms with breathing at times and carry an inhaler with me on runs and during races.  Rarely have to use it but I guess I like to know that I have it id I need it.

Way to push through man.  I did a run yesterday morning, about 12F with windchill of -5F coming off the water and at a couple points my chest started to feel real tight.  I can only imagine what it would be like to have that all the time.

Good Monday morning all!

Made the mistake of checking my place from Saturdays race. The times in my age group where slow, I finished 4th, if I wouldn't have forgotten to use my inhaler could have finished 2nd. Oh well, maybe I will remember next time.

Good SB yesterday. So did anyone think the Who looked a little OLD!

My husband was laughing at me because I  only recognized one of the songs that they WHO played last night.  Plus I was a little worried about one of the older guys...he looked like he was going to tip over!

My 15 year old daughter had no clue what band was playing.  She asked, I told her, she asked again-I was worried we were going to fall into the old Abbott and Costello "Who's on first?" routine before I finally explained it "The name of the band currently playing at halftime is The Who".  She was not impressed so I told her that it was like the Jonas Brothers would be in 50 years.

Glad to see the Saints win it.

However, the halftime show was eeirily similar to the doo-wop specials on PBS.

For all of you runners:  I have been switching to forefoot running for the past three or four runs.  This was mostly because my new orthodics were trashing my arches and I couldn't put pressure on them or they would crack and bleed.  I have really enjoyed it.  I sort of worked my way up in terms of time.  The first day I did about 20 minutes, then 35, then 50 etc.  My run on Sunday was 1:15 and felt just fine, but my calves are quite sore right in the middle where your achillies attaches to the muscle.  It's not all the time, just when I flex them, so it's not injured, just sore.  I have a 40 minute tempo run today that I am thinking about not doing because I don't want to overdo it.  Any suggestions?  I'm trying to "listen to my body." But it's not speaking the same language right now, so it's tough.
