Nah, we're not afraid of you guys! Tom, is there a better type of pepper spray out there? speaking of shopping... Good question Robin. The best place to look would probably be a local gun store or anywhere they teach advanced self-defense classes. There are two kinds of sprays - fog, which is better for close range, and jet, which is good for longer range. I'd probably recommend fog for self defense since accuracy isn't as much of an issue. One thing you want to look out for if the "strength" of the spray. The key measure you're looking for is percentage of active "capsaicinoids." You're looking for a concentration of at least 2% (more is better, but harder to find as you go up). It doesn't sound like much, but it can be quite effective. Again, if you can swing it I recommend getting two cans and using one to practice. If you do buy a spray at a gun store it's worth asking the staff how to use it. Most likely they'd be more than happy to give you some training on it's use. Another thing to consider is that if you ever did have to use it, some of the spray WILL get on you as well. It's best to know what to expect, so I recommend dabbing some on your face below your eyes to get a feel for it. It sucks, but it's important to be able to fight through the discomfort. Lastly it's important to remember that pepper spray isn't like a gun - it won't stop a bad guy in his tracks or greatly incapacitate him for a long time. It's meant to briefly disorient an attacker and cause them discomfort so you can get the hell out of Dodge. Used well it will definitely do that, but you need to know how to use it. Thanks Tom. There is a great difference between paranoid and prepared. I am NC, there are gun shops everywhere. I am sure I can find what I need with all the assistance I care for. |

I don't know if you've ever been shopping at a gun store, but those folks tend to be extremely helpful and informative. That said, if you don't get a good vibe when you walk in, then go to the next store. The merchandise at these places is basically all the same - what you're paying for is the service, which should be exempliary. |

If they know what they're talking about they'll sell you what you're comfortable with since that's what you'll be more likely to use. Only an azz would sell someone a gun if they weren't comfortable using it. The day I got pepper sprayed for work (lovely day to spend a day at the office, huh?) it rained on us afterwards. For those of you who have not experienced pepper spray, after it dries for the first time it will "reflash" when it gets wet again. This goes on for a couple days, but it gets much less noticable after the initial exposure. So, two hours after I got sprayed and the pain was finally tolerable, it rained on me and I got to have my first reflash right in time for lunch. Good times! |

Well Tom I would luv to say that sounds like fun but to be honest with you - it doesn't ![]() I take it is worst than the gas chamber in boot camp huh? Yes. The "nice" thing about the gas chamber is that the pain ends once you step into fresh air. Pepper spray sticks with you. It's the gift that keeps giving. ![]() |

I am SURE you are WAY faster than you estimate. I was thinking of getting a garmin. but I decided to save money. I just use my cheapo timex heart monitor watch with timer. It is adequate for my needs All I've got is a 50 Lap memory Timex that I just bought last week. Until then I had to use my iPod in stopwatch mode or my cell phone! I've thought about getting a HRM, but I'm not too worried about it at this point. I have a Timex HR and Garmin HR and I very seldom use either of them. I will monitor it at the end to see an avg but try not to even see what it says during the run. I try to run by knowing how I feel but not needing a monitor tell me how I should be feeling. My thoughts exactly. I just go off of how hard I'm breathing. If I can maintain a "4 steps in, 4 steps out" breathing pattern, I know I'm going at a comfortable pace. If I'm at "2 in, 2 out" then I'm close to my max effort. Not very scientific, but it seems to work ok so far. Interesting! I will have to count during my next run! |

The spray is the same, and in general will be effective against dogs as well. They even make it in "bear" concentration. And as for how to carry it on a run, they make some cans specifically for runners that can be clipped to your shorts or whatever. As for your phone, I have a SPIBelt that I use for my keys and gels sometimes and I love it. I can barely notice it on a run and they can hold phones up to iPhone size with no problem. Plus it doubles as a race belt. I used mine for that and "gel carrier" at my Half Mary and it did the job just fine. Edited by iowagander 2010-03-05 3:28 PM |
