Morning Melindynuck (i think that is right?) I dvr'd the tour so I can watch it tonight - full coverage! Melindynuck sounds so unattractive...(thanks Tom)... I just did my first 3+ hour ride yesterday and have a bit of chaffing in the undercarriage. I used Chamois Butt'r (which I used with 2 hour rides with success) but it just didn't cut it for a 3 hour ride. Tonight I rode for an hour (with nothing like usual for less than 2 hours) and of course re-aggravated what I did yesterday. So my question is, what does everyone use to prevent saddle sores/chaffing on long rides? I see Assos Chamois cream has good reviews. FWIW I ride in Pearl Izumi tri shorts that have a very minimal pad. I'm thinking about some Desoto 400 mile shorts so chime in there as well. I tend to use a triple combo of: body glide, chamois butter and noxzema (sp?) cream. Direct skin application of body glide on skin and chamois butter and noxzema cream on chamois. Why the noxzema cream you ask? Well--1) its cheap, and 2) it has a wonderful cooling tingly sensation. This seems to work for me. I have Sugoi shorts with minimal pad. I haven't been bothered for a long time by chaffing/saddle sores. You will have to wait for the guys for anatomic specific variations Thanks Mike for the question and Melissa for the reply. I've been wondering the same for a while. Need to go get me some Chamois Butt'r for this weekend! Back to a serious question. Can you apply noxzmema directly to undercarraige body parts? Chamois butter seemed to work for under 2 hour rides. Anything applied to the pad in the shorts is gone after that. Tom, Chamois butter worked for me for 1-2 hour rides. I did tip myself after the application :-) |

The way I do it now is just my random decision on how to do it. Haha. Might also want to consider reapplication if it is really bugging you during rides. Also, I think it gets better with more time in the saddle. But again, anatomical differences might change this? Not sure myself |

My next ride is in 2 days, should I keep the area dry?, apply noxema? or apply A&D anointment? Any hydrocortisone cream handy? I would apply some of that which will help with the inflammation and the pain/burning. I always have a tube hanging around for any chaffing/skin irritations/burns (yes, I am the first aid queen). If not, even diaper rash cream or the like would do. (If A&D ointment fits into that category, then use that--I'm not sure what it is?) You have 2 days, so I would just make sure that you take care of it and prevent any further abrasion to the skin in that time period. For your next ride, I would just err on the side of caution and use any combo of chamois butter/nozema/body glide/etc regardless of how long your ride is until you arn't having any trouble with chaffing anymore. You might as well, because chaffing just sucks and you probably just want to avoid it if possible. Chaffing + sweat + bacteria= less than fun. I generally always use something for rides even if they are short when I am wearing bike shorts. Sometimes I do short rides (<20km) with normal spandex without chamois, but I'm used to my saddle now and have "broken my crotch area in" if that is the right terminology? Haha. Hope that helps? |

My next ride is in 2 days, should I keep the area dry?, apply noxema? or apply A&D anointment? Het mike, consider using a hairdryer on COOL setting ONLY after your showers, to dry the, uh, area well. You really don't want it to get infected...or become full blown saddle sores. Air it out as much as possible. The A&D or other cream would work ok, but remember this gem I learned in nursing school: if it's dry, make it wet, if it's wet, make it dry. In other words, if it's moist and sweaty, or oozy at all, use some powder on it, and air out as much as possible. Otherwise, apply the creams, but not unti lyou've aired it out properly. Heck, what man wouldn't want to run around without his pants on more often, and have a good excuse for it. |

Chamois butter seemed to work for under 2 hour rides. Anything applied to the pad in the shorts is gone after that. Tom, Chamois butter worked for me for 1-2 hour rides. I did tip myself after the application :-) Ya. I don't see why not. I've done it that way too, but I was soley using noxzema at that point in time on the trainer at home in the winter. The way I do it now is just my random decision on how to do it. Haha. Might also want to consider reapplication if it is really bugging you during rides. Also, I think it gets better with more time in the saddle. But again, anatomical differences might change this? Not sure myself I went for a short ride tonight and aggravated the chaffed area. Yes! Haha. I love it: if it's dry, make it wet, if it's wet, make it dry! I'm going to tell my Mom this. She will get a kick out of it. Oh nurse talk. |
