Master 2372![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: BamaDC's Mentor Group v3.0 - CLOSEDjennitris - 2011-02-08 7:20 AM So, I was out most of last week with a death in the family. I was barely able to get in a quick run here or there. Terrible week. This week I'm trying to put in as many hours as I can - especially on the bike and in the pool. My question - I'm leaving on a cruise Saturday for a week. I know I'll be able to run on the treadmills and use the spin bikes occassionaly, but no way to get a swim workout in. I'm stressing about it since I had such a bad week last week - when we planned the trip I hadn't planned on taking two light weeks in the same month, but can't do anything about that now. Any advice? There is a pretty good weight room on the ship, are there any specific workouts I can do to keep my "swimming muscles" engaged? BTW, I'm about 7 weeks in to the 20 week HIM plan. Thanks. If you are serious about dryland training for swimming, grab this book quick. I have it - it is superb. Relevant exercises to hone in on for freestyle to get you started - lat pulldowns, straight arm pulldowns, diagonal wood chop exercise, planks, trunk twists, rotator cuff exercise. Those in any combination will hold you for a week on a boat. My favorites are the rotator cuff, straight arm pulldown, and trunk twists. The rotator cuff and pulldowns are with reasonably light weights with the intention of doing a few sets of 20. No need to go to failure here - you'll feel it the next day. Trunk twists are body weight only. I have used these to good success (my times are actually getting into the "decent" range). Edited by sand101 2011-02-08 12:37 PM |

I'm really sorry to hear that. Personally I wouldn't worry too much about the swimming. You'll loose some fitness but you'll still have about 12 weeks of training left when you get back from you vacation. Hit the pool when you get back and see how you feel, then Mark and some of the swimming gurus can help you adjust your training. |

So sorry for your loss. I hope you are getting back into a routine. And I hope you have a good time on your cruise -- don't stress too much over the swimming. You'll be in a much better frame of mind when you get back and can (hopefully) devote time to the pool. But if you feel the need, go splash around in one of the pools on the ship! |

I've heard it put this way - the distances b/t an 8k & a 10k are just short enought to make you THINK you can go wide open, but are REALLY just long enough to teach you that you can't. But they're fun! |

Should I even consider an early season Olympic? After that, not sure. Probably Buster Britton or Grandman for sure. Nothing else on the schedule yet, except Rocketman. I'm also thinking of doing a bike tour at some point this spring. |

But I may have banished a few racing demons today, thank goodness. I finished first in my age group and only 30 seconds behind the Grand Master winner. It was just a local race, but there was a decent turnout. Maybe this will give me the kick-start needed to get back into racing again!!??? |

I am honestly happy with my performance, and it is doubly nice to prove to my doctor that he was wrong. Before my knee surgery, he said that I may not get back to where I was. At that time I joked with him that he was wrong, but now I can show him too. I hope the race everyone else is doing today is going well... Can't wait to hear about it.
