abqtj - 2011-12-29 6:10 PM Sweet bike, bulfrog...what brand is that and where is it from?

Thanks, The brand is KDNC, it's a carbon Chinese frame with shimano ultegra parts on it. Got it through a local internet bike shop, www.torpedo7.co.nz It's fairly basic, but I couldn't justify the extra expense of some of the others I was looking at... Got to build the engine before I deserve something fancier.

The weather's still pretty nasty down here today, the rain's coming in horizontally. Just trying to summon up the courage to get out for a quick run...

what is the deal with the 'goofy' race?  i have heard people talk about it.

i did some hip exercises today along with bosu ball squats and stretching.  my hip flexor cramped on the 4th rep of the first set of the first exercise- pathetic.  pushed thru it.  also 1 legged squats on a bosu are CRAZY.

Well I made it out for my run, picked a gap in the rain...

If anybody has the time I'd be interested in a critique of my swim, Link here This is the first time I've seen myself swimming, and it's not as bad as I thought. I swim at about 1:50/100m

Any and all thoughts on what I should be doing differently/focusing on would be greatly appreciated.

I am not an expert, but pretty good at free. Hard to see a lot at this vantage point, but I would say when you are rotating your body really get those arms out straighter in front of you and extend them as if your finger tips are reaching for something. You should be close to rotating 180 degrees from side to side and that will give you the best stretch for the extension. It will also give you a longer pull though the water. An exercise that can help with rotation is rotating so that you see the ceiling on each side. Doing sideways swims rotating from side to side will help as well. You can do 1,2,3 second holds on the sideways drills to force the extension and that will work on balance as well.Hope this helps!

Its really tough to tell what your doing without seeing you underwater.

Here's my annotated swim ananlysis -- it may give you an idea about swim form:

http://somerandomthursday.blogspot.com/2011/02/re-learning-to-swim.html

I would REALLY suggest getting an underwater taping done.

Hour on the trainer this morning.  Treadmill intervals at lunch.  Hitting up the hilly area west of town tomorrow for a good 40ish miles and a 3 mile T run.

Good morning all-

I wish I could help with the swim analysis but I am lucky to get to the pool once a week right now.  I know I need to improve in the pool but I can only pick running and biking to really focus on this off-season. So much to improve so little time...

It's 34 degrees here. I'm jealous of your weather but def don't want the summer you had this year. How many days over 100, and no rain since June. Ouch.

Only good thing about droughts....... certainty that you won't get rained on training.

I took a very very quick look.  Most notable things are (a) you are crossing over with both arms and (b) you are swimming "up hill".  Correct the cross over and you will see your 1:50/100 go to 1:40.

Did somebody say cake?  I love cake!  Must resist.

I have been on vacation and holiday most of the past two weeks.  I thought I'd get in a lot of exercise (swimming & yoga included), and eat really good because I had lots of free time.  Well, I was wrong.  I ate the worst I've eaten in months!  And although I did exercise, it was no where near the volume or variety of what I thought it would be.

I really do a much better job with nutrition when I'm working.  As for exercise, I manage to fit it all in while working 50 - 60 hours a week.  Seems odd, but super early mornings work best for me.

In other news, one of my dogs (Marlo) has hives.  She gets them every so often, have not figured out what from.  She's on benedryl which is helping, and we're going to the pet store today to try a different kind of food.  This morning she was looking better, then after she ate breakfast she was real bad again.  She's eaten this food for years, not sure why it would start to bother her now, but I can't stand to see her this miserable.

Karen, any chance she was bitten by an insect/bug/spider? Does she go under a deck?in bushes? Seems odd to me that it would be the food.  Is it a new bag of dogfood? Message me some specifics and I can see if I can help you out!

My big news for the day is that I was given a lottery slot for the NYC 1/2 marathon in March!!! Both me and my training partner got it!!! We are pretty excited!

Another HR ??? for the experts!

I ran 3 miles this morning at a 12 minute pace which kept my HR ave at 151 - with my Kelly calculated z2 at 143-153. Since the 151 is on the higher side of z2, should I slow down more? or is that OK? Is that the zone I should be doing most of my training in? Thanks!!

Happy New Year everyone!!!!

As long as you end up in the zone you're fine.  Also if you're running hills its fine to go into (but not above) the next zone up while climbing and then let the HR settle back down on the downhills and flats.
