Ok, its offical.  I just signed up and paid the entry fee to my first race.  Now its more then just talking about doing it, Im more accountable now.  Also I joined a gym today.  They have a running club that meets three nights a week.  Kind of cool...extra support.  I sure know I could use it.

Although I have been training for two months, my weight is not coming down much.  I do feel good, and can tell my muscle tone is returning and I can see it more clearly.  I have 2 months to be prepared for my first race.  This is not my big event race, just one to get me use to running 5K.

Now the hardest part, which I keep putting off...quiting smoking.  I know smoking and running does not mix.

ALL great steps... just dump the smokes and wash all your clothes and bedding etc... you won't want to smell like crap anymore. I quit 15 years ago. Cold turkey...and I lost weight!! Do it today. Are you a sweet or savory person? I have a tough time because I don't particularly care for sweets... or sodas, I like the salty stuff... all the asian foods... chips etc. So it's a sodium battle and right now I'm not winning. Today is a new day, right? So glad you are feeling good! one more hint... the running club is great, but don't overdo. We with extra weight can hurt our feet by doing too much too soon. It's great to be with other people, and they are SO encouraging, but you might find yourself doing more than you should. Join 'em for sure though! Continued success, love your attitude!

Yes I hate being additeted to smoking.  I just moved into a new house, bought all new bedding and dont smoke in the house.  Just bought one of those electric smokeless cigerates to help.  I hate being a slave to smoking.

I would say I am a sweet person.  Mt. Dew is my life...thats pretty much all I drink...dont really eat sweets and junk food too much.  I gained a lot of weight in 08 after my divorce...lost alot of it with out exercising, now Im at the point where I will not lose anymore without working out...so I got to put in the work.

You are doing so well !!!!  The weight will come down eventually.  Your body is going thru a lot of adjustments.  And YES, DO QUIT smoking.  I know it is so hard to change the habits, but this is a great time to do so.  Congratulations for all the great steps you are making!

Thanks...making a lot of life changes here and its overwhelming at times.  Some times I think Im making too many changes too fast, hope that doesnt set me up for failure.  Although I have it in my mind that failure is not an option.

Well I met with my personal trainer at the gym today.  Set up my first session with her tomorrow.  Its kind of funny at how fit they are and them telling me "Yeah, not a problem...we will put you on a program that will whip you right into shape"  LOL.

I also met with the director of the running club at the gym.  Was kind of nervous about the whole thing, but she was real nice and understanding.  Asures me that there are alot of new and out of shape runners in the club.  They meet 3 times a week...with 2 outdoor runs (if weather permits) and 1 indoor run.

Whats great is that the director of the club is also doing the two races Im signed up for...puts more accountability for me to show   lol.

You are doing all the right things.  Keep it up.  Change happens slowly sometimes, but the day will come when you'll look back at the person you used to be and realize that you are not the same any more. You are a better person.  It's a great feeling.

So I'm finally coming up for air after 2 weeks of moving my family to a new home.  We went to a smaller home so a there was a lot of trips to the waste facility to throw away stuff we just didn't need any more.  It's a big relief to be out of the house, but now we need to settle into the new one.  The garage is full of boxes and other stuff so the cars are parked outside until we sort it all out and organize our stuff again.

I was able to get many workouts in during all of this. I'm pretty amazed that I was able to do that.  One thing I've realized is that when something is important enough, you'll make time for it.  My goals are that important to me and I didn't really miss any of my workouts. There were many workouts that were done in old shorts that I would never wear in public (i.e too tight or short).  One bike workout on my trainer was in my boxer shorts cuz I couldn't find a darn thing to wear.

Anyway, I hope you are all doing well.  I've got my first race this season in 3 weeks. It's a 12K which is very famous here in San Francisco.  I ran it back in the late 90's and again 2 years ago.  It should be a lot of fun.  We run across the Golden Gate Bridge from Sausalito to San Francisco.  I'm really siked about it.

The only thing I have planned for the spring are two 5Ks, both of which I ran last year.  One is on May 19 and the other is on memorial day weekend.  I would like to do a tri, but I am thinking the water is going to be way cold and I do not have a wet suit.

I think I have my summer worked out, with an Aqua run in the beginning of July ( a do over for me as it kicked my but last time), my A race towards the end of July and a local sprint at the end of August.

Last 13.1 yesterday. Ugh... painful, but not as bad as the first one. Not as fast as the 3rd one. The next time I think it's a good idea to do one every month for 5 months, just slap me.

Triathlon training starts in earnest this week. Time for some swimming. Anybody seen the new 910xt? it has all sorts of groovy swim data, lap data etc on it. WAY TOO EXPENSIVE though. I think I'm following enrique's lead and getting that other thing we talked about a few pages ago... I'll look it up.

Eating out since I started the new job has packed 8lbs on me!! geesh! hit the store today for veggies so I'll stop getting Chinese. Duh.

Still haven't picked my first Tri for the year. How about you guys? any 5k or 10ks coming up?

Have a 5k planned for April 22. Was going to do the Wisconsin Marathon on May 5, but now thinking I may not be ready.  Ankle still giving me trouble. May do the half instead.

I'm a little bummed.  We had our test in my computrainer class, and I actually got worse by a little. The coach said not to worry, that so many variables can contribute (as in lack of sleep do to a new furry member of the family), but that really didn't make me feel better.  Although, now I am stoked to kick me a$$ to improve, especially if I am going to get that new bikeWink ( Still a maybe)

i raced 2/26 (9+ mile spartan race) and have a 4/1 triathlon (Nautica South Beach classic distance) on the books.  After that, I have no idea, although long-term I'm thinking of either doing the Miamiman half iron again or the new Rev3 that's in the Sarasota area.  I also donated $40 to WTC for the Kona lottery, so....

Hey all.  Sorry I was absent.  I had to quit my job.  :D  Took the buyout.  Getting things together to look for a job to tide me over until social security in 18 months.  All good.  Just weird not having a place to go every M-F.  Going to start my International Triathlete Coaching Asso course this week.  They do it all online.  Not as prestigious as USAT but I can't afford the plane fare or hotel to do theirs in person right now.  USAT recognizes ITCA for continuing ed so more people will be getting both, I'm sure.  I plan to.

Training is good.  Bike, starting the build phase.  Going to get harsher now.  Tested my FTP at 297.  Peak last season was 319.  On track to match that by the A race.

Swimming - took a couple of semi private lessons with a tri coach.  He really got me rolling side to side.  Times are down, efficiency is up.

Running - run club started on Wednesdays.  That will be my speed work for the week plus 2X for long slow run and a fast short run.

Rock on.

Hey everyone...been meaning to post for a while. Sounds like everyone's getting their races lined up. My first triathlon is April 15, so I'm starting to get a little nervous. I actually tried on and reserved a wetsuit today (talk about a humbling experience...thought I'd look a little more sleek in the neoprene after 2 months of training).

Anyway, I also bought some cycling shorts, and tried on a pair of Newtons, which I'm definately going to be purchasing when my Asics wear out. If you're a heelstriker like moi, these kicks are great--you can't help but land on the balls of your feet. Steph (or whoever it was who recommended Newtons for my PF, thank you!) I've been slowly upping my running, but I just committed to doing the Ragnar Relay this fall with some friends, so I'll need to start really building my mileage this summer. I'm hoping the Newtons will keep the plantar fascitis at bay.

Hope y'all stay injury-free and are enjoying your workouts!

Yep, love my Newtons... ease into them though... it's a new feeling and you'll have a little soreness, most likely in the calves. The shoes come with directions. Still love my Cascadias too.

Glad to have you back!!! Excited for your race? GOOD!

So cool! You are actually RIGHT IN SOUTH BEACH... so it's the pretty part, busy. The ocean swim is a run from the beach into the surf. So few are like that anymore...you swim out to a buoy... down the beach... and then back in. The bike is basically the same route as all the half marathons I've been doing! You'll head down the main drag, then turn and go back towards the city... 1st bridge is pretty easy, 2nd bridge a bit tougher... then up the mainland to the next turn onto the next causeway back to the beach. Yep, 2 more bridges. The first is ok, the second is steep but short. This ride is BEAUTIFUL... so at least you can enjoy it... urban, and port and cruise ships on your way out... open water, pelicans, and sea breeze on your way back! then down through the city streets back to transition. It looks like they will have you on the concrete paths for the run...that's OK, but even if it's the hard pack sand, it's very firm. I hope we can meet! We'll have to exchange cells. I'm excited for you!

ST JUDE is the ultimate cause as well, so it's ALL THAT.
