Hi guys,

Sarah, sounds like your rehersal went really well. Thats great, the extra confidence will be priceless.

Jenny, hope you sort your leg issues. Hopefully a massage will help. Good luck getting to race on Sat. Only 94 days? It'll fly by! Enjoy it.

Ok, Sunday is race day for me. Im super excited and utterly terrified. Im mostly worried about nutrition as you may recall my 2 longest runs (18 & 21) were a bit of a nightmare. I guess i'll just do my best and see what happens with it.

RFP no matter what!!

Hi team.  I am back.  Phew.  It's been a hectic week.  It's only Wednesday.  Good grief.

Well, on the leg front- I ran on Monday for one mile- 9:24 min pace, very gimpy, but minimal soreness.  It is definitely more in the hip than the quad now.  I paid for it later that day.  Now I started seeing a friend who is a chiropractor to see what he can do to help.  He worked with me yesterday and took x-rays- good news, it doesn't appear there is a stress fracture.  I am trying to get an appointment with a massage therapist to get some deep tissue work done on the hip, and hopefully then I can race Saturday.  I need to race.  I have been practicing my transitions, and mastered the art of keeping my shoes clipped in and sliding my feet in the shoes while I am pedaling.  I am excited to race.  I have some frustrations to let out on the course.  94 days till IMWI.

Happy Training,

Jenny

Cheeky - good luck on Sunday.  Remember to take your time going through the finish chute - that is the part you want to savor, if you go too fast you wont even remember it.

Jennifer - I hope your leg gets feeling better soon.  Chiropractic has always worked well for me.

Last night I was planning on a 1-1.5 hour ride with a friend.  He called shortly before and said, "do you want to do a long run instead?"  I will never ride in place of running, so out we went with no planned route, distance or timeline (My wife was incredulous as I told her this)  So we headed out to thei hilliest course I could think of and ended up back in my neighborhood 9 miles later.  Felt really good to get out there like that.

Off to Chicago - have a goreat weekend everyone!

Jenny - Good luck on Saturday! Just think of this as a practice race for IMWI.

Cheeky - Good luck on your race on Sunday!  You will do fine with the nutrient.

I am truly loving my week off from training!  Yes, that is correct my coach gave me the week to be lazy and it is working. I am starting to get antsy where I want to start training again and I have a new outlook on training so when I start back up on Monday I will be ready for the home stretch to IMKY!

Sarah - nice job on the rehearsal yesterday.  I have been using the perpetuem with water and find that I do have to drink a decent amount of water especially with the gels.  If it helps this is what I have been doing and plan to do:

  • Aerobottle for H20.  I find that if I have it staring in my face I will drink it.  I plan to just use hand ups of water and just keep that filled as much as I can.
  • I have tried the 3 hour bottle and 4 hour bottle of Perpetuem and will probably go with the 3 hour mix seeing as that there will be a lot of time after I mix the first bottle- but I will go with a 3 hour mix on my down tube and frozen 3 hour bottle on my seat cage.  The other bottle will be Perform just in case I wanna change it up a bit - should be ok because I have trained the whole time with it.
  • The plan is to take a gel about every 40 minutes.  I had a gel incident on Saturday where it got all over my forearm and aerobottle and was a sticky mess so I think I am gonna get the hammer gel bottles and just fill them.
  • I am also gonna keep a baggy with 3 hours of Perpetuem mix in Special Needs just in case I lose a bottle somewhere.

I am finding the Pereptuem nice seeing as that all I have to worry about is drinking my water.  I would highly suggest some type of aerobottle like you said and I think you will be fine.

Haven't figured out the run yet but I am thinking a starting off with a different flavor 1 hour bottle of Perpetuem then using Hammer Gels and living off the course.

WTG on the races, Scott & KC!

I had my final race rehearsal yesterday and it went great! MUCH better than the last one I did where I drank old Perform, got cramps and walked most of the run.  Saturday I rode with a couple bike team buddies up to watch the Glencoe Grand Prix crit since we had a few guys racing.  I even ended up running into an old colleague of mine that I hadn't seen in 8 years from State Farm!  None of the guys podiumed but one got 10th and the other got 12th in the Men's Cat 4.

Yesterday was the big day: rode to the first rest stop with bike team and then back to the shop.  Ran from the shop down to the lakefront to the Field Museum and then back to the shop.  Unfortunately my Garmin was dead ( I thought I turned it off after the ride Sat but didn't and when I went to turn it on at the start of the ride yesterday, it was dead) Oh well, I just went by RPE, and was pleasantly surprised.  Got some status from buddies and I ended riding a total of 2:43 45 miles, avg 16.4 mph and then ran about 6.4 miles in about 70 min.  Piddled around a bit on the way back, could've gone faster.  Had some asthma issues about 20 min into the run so I walked for about 15 min but then ran most of the way back minus the stop lights.

Overall, I'd say it was a successful race rehearsal. Riding the TT bike was pretty comfortable although I need to get a water bottle in the front as I only had 2 behind the seat bottles.  Nutrition was good. I was drinking Perpetuem and took 2 gels, one at about mile 15 and then another at mile 22.  I probably could've drank more water though.  My legs are pretty beat today.  Tried running this am...wko called for 15min warm up and then 2x1/2 mile @ threshold pace...I could only do about 2 miles total and that was even a struggle.  Gonna try to do some upper body and core tonight.

Happy Monday!

Good plan! You can also pre-mix the gels with water so you don't have to open gel packages or worry about drinking water with the gels when you take them.

I lived off the run course completely but for taking a gel bottle in my back pocket.  There is all kinds of stuff.  Was going for chicken broth and cookies a lot by the end.

I'm skipping Racine 70.3.  It was an add on.  Instead, I am buying a new bike!  Specialized Shiv.  My TT bike is at the shop so they can move some things over.  My compact Red crank.  My return to center shifters.  My Adamo.  They are going to put the other stuff on the old bike so I'll have a complete one to sell.  Charging $150 for that and they will keep it and a mountain bike I want to sell there in their used rack.

I decided on the Shiv because it is aero, and designed with great adjustability in the front.  Made for age groupers like me with issues.  I am tired of not looking forward to riding a TT bike due to pain.  This will give the chance of alleviating it.  If it does, great.  If it doesn't, I'm only out a few bucks (after selling the other two bikes).  It's the best shot and I'm only 60 so I plan to race a long while yet so what the hell.

Racine was not an A race.  I am signed up for an Oly that same weekend here so I will race some distance anyway, have a mid-season goal and save boocoo bucks on entry and lodging so I'll have more when I go to Madison to sign up and volunteer and to Branson in September.  Made sense to the wife and I and the coach so there is it. I get it early next week.

Hi Team!

I am recovering from my race yesterday.  The weather was a little warm, but by far the best weather yet for a race.  Swim went well, I was able to get into a rhythm and finished the 400yd swim in 7:41.  Had the third fastest T1 in my age group, and was able to successfully hope on the bike with my shoes already on the pedals.  The bike was the best I have ever felt during a race.  I was actually passing people, which is a rarity for me!  I felt like I was flying.  12.4 miles in 44:08. T2 was good, and the run was better than I hoped, given the hip.  I ran the 5k in 27:29.  Finished with 1:23, a new PR, and 5 minutes faster than my time last year.  7th place in my age group, 89th overall.

Paying for it today though...hip is killing me.

Good Morning Team.

I hope everyone had a great weekend - racing, training, working or relaxing.

I have another race this coming Sunday - just a sprint, but it is a busy one and will give me more confidence swimming in a fish bowl with a bunch of other gold fish bumping into me Smile.

I did not mention this yesterday but I did a 120 km ride in Michigan yesterday - decided to go find some hills to work on. I had one scary moment - first fall on the new bike. I had just come down a hill and decided to turn around and do it again but I cut my turn a bit wide and hit the curb accidently. I could not recover and did a big tumble onto a grassy embankment. I was half way into my ride (about 60km) and after I composed myself, picked myself up and dusted myself off, I checked my bike and all seemed well. I decided to RFP and finish off the ride - made it, but today, the left hip is bruised and sore. I am bringing the bike in to make sure it is ok later today.

Recover week this week and my body needs it.

Have a great day and a great week everyone.

Sorry I haven't been around much guys.  This past week has been one of those weeks no the calendar I have been dreading with a bunch of shows and busy at work but I made it through.  I also ended up painting my house all day yesterday which my wife has been harping me on all summer.  I decided to not ride on Sunday so that I can just get it done and not feel guilty every weekend I ma out riding and come home to an unpainted house -haha.  Anyways that is all behind me now and it is time to refocus....

I have an Olympic this Saturday that will be my first of two IM prep races.  Maybe a good race is what I need to get back in the swing of things.

KC - Sorry to hear about your fall, but as Tim said as least it was on the grassy area.  Hope your hip is feeling better and that the bike is fine.

Tim - you want to come paint my house?  Just kidding, I know what you mean about feeling guilty about not helping out around the house when we are out there training.

Cheekymonkey - how was the marathon?

I am back after a much needed week off!  Can't believe what a week of not thinking about training can do for the mind and body.  If you can do it I highly recommend it.

Thanks KTC and Tim - I will keep you posted on the hip - but it was the bike that was my first concern Laughing - wow we are a crazy bunch!

Tim - don't worry about it my friend - you are doing a great job and you will be fine - just remember that you can post painting in your training log - under other sports - home improvement - I am serious, remember I post yard work LOL Laughing. You can also think of it like you were the karate kid this weekend - wax on, wax off, sand the floor, (kind of like paint the wall lol) - and before you know it you are kicking A$$ and your catch is better when you are swimming and you are shifting more efficiently because of all those paint strokes? Wink

Have a great day team.

KC- Yikes!  Glad you and the bike are ok!

I saw the chiropractor again today, wow, there were a lot more pops today than last week!  I made an appointment tomorrow AM to see a massage therapist for active release technique.  I am hoping this will help, at this point I am desperate.  Had a couple friends suggest it, one said that he was dealing with Achilles' tendinitis and after two months of PT, wasn't any better, and after two treatments, he was running pain free.  Has anyone else heard of or used ART?

Off to watch more soccer.  Not playing is KILLING me.  The Euro cup is on, I have been glued to the TV when I am not training.  Going to watch my coed teams play tonight as long as the rain holds off.  I got in my training this morning- 3500m swimming, and 30 min. of lifting.

Happy training everyone!

Hi Jenn.

My Chiropractor is an IM and he practices ART. I started seeing him over a year ago because (long story short) I had a nerve impingement between my c5 and c6. I was doing physio for weeks and tried massage but that was killing me. My massage therapist suggested my chiro because of ART and because he was an IM. He works miracles on me and would not know what to do if I could not go see him. I am sure he and ART are what got me back to normal. Hope it works for you like it does me.

Jenny - nice job on the race, well done! Now get that hip taken care of so you can kick some more butt :-)

KC - glad the fall was it was not too serious. Lets hope the bike store gives the bike a clean bill of health too!

My marathon went ok until I hit the issue I was most worried about - nutrition. I started flaking around mile 16/17 ish. I couldn't stand the thought of eating anything at all. Even Gatorade tasted disgusting and way too sweet. I tried some pretzels and a bite of banana, eventually I was on the move again and found a guy to run with. He was struggling too and somehow we got through the next 4 miles together at a somewhat decent pace, then we seperated. Miles 23 -26 were awful. A mix of shuffle/run/walk I wanted to run, would take a few steps and then just flake to a walk.

Considering I started in the steady 10:20 range I was a bit bummed to end with an average pace of 12:23 and a time of 5:25 :-(

I guess it gives me a time to beat though, right?

Cheekymonkey- Nice job!  I remember my first marathon, I hit the wall about the same point as well.  If it hadn't been for the hot Aussie who was the pace group leader for the 5 hour group, I probably would have given up and walked home.  (the finish line was about 1 mile from my house).  Congrats!
