Extreme Veteran 648 Scottsdale | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Originally posted by devilfan02 I just posted this question in the Iron Training Talk section but how is everyone seeding themselves for the mass swim start? I will probably be out of the water between 1:05-1:10 which is probably middle of the pack. I don't want to get swum over but definitely don't want to be stuck swimming around large groups. Anyone else a similar swimmer and have any IM mass swim start experience? I will probably just seed myself in the front 1/3 and hope for the best. If you are 1:05 - 1:10, I suggest going towards the front. That swim speed is better-than-average, and if you start too far back you will have to navigate through the 1:20-1:30 crowd. IM AZ swim start is usually made up of 4 quadrants (although not officially). Front left are the speedsters, front right are the next level swimmers, back left are the middle-of-the-pack swimmers, and the more deliberate swimmers typically start in the back right (closer to the wall for comfort). Since the lake veers right, if you are a speedster and start on the right, you will have the other speedsters veering into you as the lake bends. If it works properly, they veer right in front of the next level swimmers for a clean merge. Just remember if you start left, you will be veering right - if you start right, people will be veering into you. It is just the nature of the swim course at TTL. |

Member 347 Scottsdale, AZ | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Good stuff everyone - thanks! As of right now, I like the idea of starting in the middle about 5 rows back. I'll most likely get pinched in by swimmers on the left and right when the wall jets in but at least I won't have to swim around too many swimmers at the start. Can't get through an IM mass swim start without some commotion... |

Expert 1224 Is this Heaven? No, it's Iowa. | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Originally posted by thepaul500 How about a 5 hr ride with 3 at race pace???? Best of both worlds! Got a few more weeks to peak still. Anyone have a link to past few years temps and what to expect? I've seen some mention of it on here, and looking at the averages has me a little worried. Water temp will be fine no matter what pretty much, two swim caps if needed but otherwise perfect! More worried about the bike....travelling all the way from Missouri, so I'll be bringing two of about everything anyways, but just want to hear some thoughts. Currently, I'm think long sleeve under armor heatgear compression top over a singlet if the temps are in the 40's or 50's in the AM. Have it all on under the wetsuit for a quick T1. Would give both sun protection and some protection from the cold. If it gets too hot on later laps can always dump some water. Thoughts? Past experiences? Etc? First thing, I can't stand your picture... GO HAWKS!! Just kidding bud! Regarding what to wear... For me, and this is my first IM so take this with a grain of salt: SWIM: Full length wet suit. Normal race swim cap. No booties. Under the wet suit: Tri Shorts, short sleeved tri top (tank top) and probably arm warmers. Bike: You already know. I will plan on peeling off the arm warmers at some point and either saving them for special needs or handing them off to my wife on the route. Run: Going with what's on my body except I will add my brand spanking new kick Hawkeye Headsweats running hat. In special needs I will have a few packets of anti-chaffing ointment, extra Honey Stingers / gus and maybe a long sleeved throw away shirt for the run. I don't plan on needing a bunch of stuff in special needs since I will be happy to live off the course.
I need to stay off this site. Work productivity is dramatically being affected by the butterfiles in my stomach. Stay healthy everyone!

The first one St. George I started more towards the back and ended up swimming around a ton of people. At CDA I started in the front and I will start in the front in AZ as well. My biggest problem with being in the front is, I need to remember to let the super fast swimmers go. I tried to keep up in CDA and my heart rate went way up I had to stop and catch my breath. I plan on letting them bust out fast and then fall in right behind them. So sounds like maybe front center from what I'm reading. I really want to go better then 1:10. |

Veteran 820 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Well, training lately has been getting tough. I've been working crazy hours. Not really a lot, just when they fall on the scedule. Like yesterday/today. Yesterday 0630-1730, then back in again at 2100 and out at 0100, then back in again at 0700 for another full day of work. I might as well just be sleeping at work, but I have a wife and 3 kids 4 and under that say otherwise. Last weekend, well, I didn't get a weekend so I'm on my 12th day in a row, those hours were the same random hours. I can tell you though that my commute is about twice as fast at 0300 on the weekend then it is during a normal day. Not anything I haven't done before, but when the hours are differant everyday, and sometimes not getting enough time off to get quality sleep, well it adds up and takes it toll on you. |

Many people use the concrete wall along the side of the lake as their lateral sight line. If you are a right-side breather that works well, as you should always have the ability to view your depth from the wall as you breathe. Left-side breathers have it more difficult, as the other wall is too far away to use for depth-perception. 750m-1000m from the bridges, many people use the bridge arches or other aspects of the bridges to sight from. Since the lake bends a little, this can only be done at closer distances. While in town (and before the race of course), if you are not planning to take part in the practice swim Saturday, take a walk along the lake to Scottsdale Rd and get up on the bridge. Look back to the west (towards the IM Village) and you will see the lake bend, and you can get a pretty good picture of how the swim will go. |

Extreme Veteran 648 Scottsdale | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Check out these images of the IM AZ swim: Swim start line (faster swimmers are usually on the rigtht side of the picture) - as the swim progresses, those faster swimmers move right to left on the picture to 'squeeze' the channel a bit: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_5k9OEyb-iig/TEoKx0RGFjI/AAAAAAAAAH8/SJAW7... Don't get too close to the wall, you can see if picture #2 there are a few docks etc that stick out a bit here and there. Doing a quick walk of the course you will see this. In the picture it looks like there are a few people about to run into them. Another the swim map on the IM sight doesn't show if where the swim turnaround is. Last year I thought it would be right past the scottsdale bridge even though they don't show it in the picture, it is actually a bit further past the bridge then even I thought, maybe 300 yds? Sighting off the wall will work, just take other notes of buildings etc where the wall turns, for the shortest route at some point you'll get further away from the wall. This is a great point and the cause of much confusion. In my opinion, IM does a very poor job of showing where the swim turnaround point really is on the swim map. They make it appear that it's before the Rural/Scottsdale bridge because they don't show the bridge on the map. In fact, the turnaround point is well past the bridge. Someone posted a garmin map from their IMAZ swim last year that shows the true turnaround point. I will try and find then post here. |

Sighting off the wall will work, just take other notes of buildings etc where the wall turns, for the shortest route at some point you'll get further away from the wall. I was one of the almost unfortunate "dock-eaters" in 2011, my first IM. I swam on the far right, and about 1,000m out I looked up to see one of the south shore docks right in front of me. I am sure it happens to many individuals, especially first-timers, each year, so if this is your first IM AZ, heed that advice. Give yourself 10-15m off the wall to ensure you have clear water in front of you. As for the turnaround point, it is deceivingly past Scottsdale Rd bridge. All of the course maps make it look like it is just past the bridge, but it really sits about 300m beyond. Both years I recall getting to the bridge thinking "turn around ahead", just to see the buoys way off in the distance. Here again, course knowledge is important so you do not get mentally off your plan. |

Veteran 820 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Ok now that we covered the swim, next up the bike. Anyone have any suggestions. Hmm follow your plan I guess. Last year I stuck to my target hr, the first half of the first lap was terrible. Everyone, and I do mean everyone was passing me, a 60 year old lady passed me and said keep it up your setting yourself up for a good bike, I knew she was right, but I still wanted to say some not so kind words, so I said thank you. My first half lap average, about 13 mph, I think I was passed by at least 100 if not 200 people. By the time I got to the third lap I was flying, I felt like the faster person on the course, still going st the same target hr, I was passing everyone like they weren't moving. Ended up about 17.7 mph for the whole ride I think. 10 minutes faster each lap at the same hr, and nailed my target hr for the bike leg to the exact beat. Ended up passing everyone that passed me, plus about 200. So I guess just stick to the plan. Not too many suggestions, it's a pretty straight forward course, I guess if I had another one it would be peddle through the top of the hill and get back to speed, so many people slowing to a snails pace at the turnaround and nor accelerating back up to speed before taking a break. In all actuality you go slightly down hill before the turnaround, so you still are going up a false flat after the turn for a half mile or so. Another thing I did last year, the white lane line are fairly wide, maybe 4-6" . They are where you find the least amount of rolling resistance, but be are I'll if they are wet, which they shouldnt be, but you never know. Also remember to stretch often if you tend to get a tight back like me, I wad standing up and getting a short 10 second stretch of the back every 30 or so. |

Part of the reason so many people slow down at the turn at Shea is because of the aid station there. Most people will turn and cruise through the aid station, then re-set and get going. Keeping to your HR plan was the right way to go. It will serve you well, regardless of how many people pass you, or of the conditions (wind, rain, etc) that may occur. |

Sioux, I had similar conversation with my wife a couple weeks ago. She also told me my attitude sucked.....sucked is the nice version of the word she used. Then this past Saturday morning when I got home from work my 4yr old daughter said this to me, right when I walked in the door: "Daddy, you never go to my soccer games." DOH!!! It was 40 degrees with fog and drizzle. So my outdoor 5hr ride was supposed to turn into a 4hr trainer ride, while the fam was at soccer. Well, I couldn't stand the sad look on her face, so I went to the soccer game and moved on to plan C. Got in a 3hr trainer ride after we got back from soccer. On the trainer from 11-2. After that, cleaned up my bike/trainer stuff and myself. Then out the door at 3:30 for an anniversary/date at one of the hotel/casinos in the mountains. I pigged out at the buffet, then played craps (and taught my wife how to plays craps) until 11:00pm. When we were in the elevator, heading to our car Sunday morning, a lady told me and my wife that we looked very tired. I said, "yes we are. And, I have to go home and run for 2hrs." She couldn't believe that anyone would want o run for 2hrs. LOL!! I am sssoooooooooo glad today is a rest day!!!! My legs, and well, everything else was wore the heck out after my run yesterday. The nice thing is that I got 8hrs of sleep on Saturday night AND Sunday night. Not so good that Thursday and Friday night were 6hrs and 4ish hrs, respectively. I can't wait until I start vacation on November 2nd and get to sleep every night without interruption, leading up to the 17th |
