Ok dogpaddle I didn't even know it was humanly possible to only eat one slice of pizza. :-) This is why I don't give diet advice.

But I will say that I had good success following paleo to get rid of the last of my baby weight. I discovered that I was really eating all grains all the time ...with a side order of cheese. By knocking those out entirely I ate a ton more fruits and veggies and the weight came off.

Not a big fan of veggies but I hear good stuff about the paleo. Will start that as soon as I feel better.

I'm currently eating Primal.  I eat a good amount of full fat dairy, meats, fish, veggies, nuts, some fruit.  I find it tough to eat enough at times without the processed foods, grains and sugars I used to eat.

I did a whole 30 in August and while it was rough for a couple of weeks I did find that avoiding so many food items (dairy, legumes, all sweeteners, all grains, certain oils) really got rid of cravings and forced me to eat better foods.

DLB Congrats! - Quite an accomplishment

Amy - I never heard of the Paleio diet until Dogpaddle just mentioned it. Been looking online for info. Is there a synopsis version or site you used? Any insite you could provide would be appreciated.

I read a book called the Paleo Diet. Basically the idea is that food technology has advanced faster than our bodies has evolved so you should avoid anything that our paleo ancestors wouldn't have eaten. So apples good, Doritos bad. That's obvious but it also rules out processed grains and all dairy products. There is an addendum for endurance athletes like ourselves.

Thanks! I am off to pick up the book today. Looks like I got some homework to do but this appears to be exactly what I have been looking for. Wish me luck, I'll keep you posted.

I really liked the book "It Starts with Food" which is by the Whole30 people, so a stricter Paleo.  It includes some science, but doesn't dwell on the whole caveman business.

That looks like a good book. I ordered it :-) I agree the caveman angle is a little off putting in the Cordain books.

For me I'm not on a diet but I do read all kinds of nutrition books and articles. If I followed everything they all say I'd just be drinking water and eating no food. Ha!

I *try* to eat real food whenever possible. So an apple is clearly real food and a twix bar is processed food. That one is pretty easy. Other things I find are sometimes not so simple (ie a sweet potato is real but how about sweet potato tater tots from the freezer section? Turned out they were gross so nobody in my house ate them.)

But for me reading about paleo and Wheatbelly changed my personal definition of processed food to include lots of other things. I personally find it very hard to swear anything off 100% to be honest. I also have kids in the house and so there is kid food around me a lot.

In the end I feel that there probably aren't right or wrong absolute choices for nutrition. Especially since every person is different. Some people eat meat - others swear meat will kill you. Most people agree that nuts are healthy but if you're allergic they must be avoided. So every one can make their own choices and we all do the best we can and hope for the best.

Holy Cow I am going to lose my job! Sorry for being late.

I never recommend firing volunteers. Smile

And I think I'm already back up two pounds. I've had a nasty cold for two weeks and I think I was dehydrated. Didn't get hardly any exercise during that time either. But I'm finally feeling better. Got in a run, weights and a swim tonight. Felt good mostly.

Weekend includes longest run of my life - 9 miles. I'm starting to freak a little bit, as my half marathon plan is getting serious. But I know I'll feel awesome once I accomplish this goal.

You are going to do great! When I go longer for the first time I am not trying to break a personal or world record. Take your time and you should be OK. With this Hadd method I have been keeping my heart rate down which means easy running and I am doing miles I never dreamed of before and actually feeling good afterwards.

Keep that great attitude and as Amy says keep a smile on your face and you are going to do great this weekend on your 9. Good Luck!!!

When you get ready for that long run, remember that distance is just a number. You have been training hard and you will make your goal because of it. You are going to get out there and own this 9. Rip it's friggin head off and feel like you can hit a few more right after. Have fun and don't stop running.

Did my 9 this morning. I felt fantastic! I struggled through 6.3 last week with a bad cold. But I'm mostly over it now. Today was sunny. It was (relatively) warm. Birds chirping. Trees budding. It was really just perfect this morning.

Next week is cut back. I have a 4 mile race Saturday evening. The week after I have a 15k race, that I will pace like a training run. Race day is about 2 months away. I'm feeling good. And amazed that this is something that I can actually accomplish.

After the half marathon, I have one month until my first tri of the year, so I need to get more consistent with my swimming. Which will get easier every day as it turns from winter to spring. Hard to get motivated to swim when it's snowing outside. Smile

jeuart - Great job on the 9!

After being injured it was nice to finally get out there running this weekend. I did back to back 5 mile runs on Saturday and Sunday at Wompatuck State Park near my house. I like to run there because it is safe after it snows, there is a main road 2.5 miles long that is well plowed and not many cars. We got dumped on Friday with another 2 feet of snow which is rare in March. One thing that was really cool on my run was seeing two dog-sled teams going through the woods. It was beautiful seeing the Huskies through the trees and sunlight.

Found out TriMania is in Boston on March 23rd and Mirinda Carfrae will be there holding a seminar and taking part in some events. They are going to be holding some beginner Total Immersion clinics too that I am going to try and attend.

BTW - Down 4 pounds this week to 174. Smile

Thanks for all of the encouragement this week, everyone. 9 miles was a big milestone for me.

No change in weight this week. Too much celebratory wine. Smile

Oh geez. Daylight savings certainly made this morning a challenge. Last week was a recovery week which combined with one of my kiddos being sick made for a very (and I mean very) light exercise week.

This weekend I ended up doing my training solo because of family events which gave me plenty of time to reflect on getting back on track this week. So last night I was in bed early. Early enough that my hubs was teasing me with the "old" time and stuff. But that made it easier to get up for the early swim workout. I needed every moment of that sleep because it was tough getting back in the pool. I am definitely a person who loses swim fitness quickly and I have to work to not miss swim workouts or I pay for it dearly. Which is what happened today.

But I slogged it out. Admittedly with a little extra rest here and there :-) But I'm feeling back on the program which is good.

What is the TriMania? I see the ad but haven't clicked on it to find out what it is. I would love to see Carafrae speak for sure. That does sound great.

Have a good week everyone!
