GANG!

Having followed woefully behind with race reports (still ow for Mainiac, Cortland, and Buckman) doesn't deter me from assembling the makings of another, to wit:

Saturday, Sept 22 --- ITPman (0.5 - 15miles - 5miles), out of Darien, CT.  The swim will be in Long Island Sound (yay!!), the bike is hilly (yay!!), and the run will be a nice switch-up (yay!!) from my staple of 5km race-runs this season.

I had really wanted to do an oly, but the only one was a HITS one at Hunter Mountain, NY.  That's only about 4.5 hours away from me, as opposed to the 6.5 of ITPman, but i couldn't get past the fact of the entry fee being jacked (effective last Saturday) from $150 to $225.  But I weighed it back and forth until about 2 p.m. today, and made my decision in favor of ITPman.  I feel good about it, and am looking forward to it!

My oly choices, howefver, are limited to two:  Montauk (tip of Long Island) next weekend, which is expensive fee and expensive lodgings, a bit over 10 hours away, and Giant Acorn (oct 6) in VA, which is an inexpensive race --- but 12 hours away.  A third option is the Bugeye Classic, in Cambridge MD, also next weekend.  The problem there is that while the bike and run are oly-length, the swim is 1.2 miles --- easier to manage with a half-iron and full iron also happening that same day.

Blah, blah, blah -- the ramblings of an indecisive crazy guy!!

Anyhow, i'll be gone from tomorrow morning until Saturday evening; hopefully more like late afternoon, but who knows how the border will be?

Have a great race and safe travels!

Looking forward to hearing about Jeff and Trina's races too!

I am at home, waiting to travel in the morning. OKC is only 3 hours away.  I think that Gettysburg run is the same one you mentioned.

It is a gamble for me taking this trip. Hopefully a deposit will hit the bank so I can eat, buy gas etc. If that happens everything will work out fine, hotel room and basic needs. if not, then I will be mowing yards in OKC to get home lol Its a tense position to be in but reminds me of my twenties racing on a shoe string and sleeping in whatever I was driving at the moment

Ha!  It may turn out that I sleep in my Ford Focus wagon tomorrow night -- if I have in fact shrunk enough over the past couple of years to just-barely fit diagonally.  I believe there is night-before bike-racking, so if that happens, then that would free up the back for yours truly.  There are no campgrounds in that area of hoity-toity CT, and the motels tend to be quite expensive or borderline dumpy.  So, we'll see.

Boy-child just phoned, so i gotta get to him now.  Later!

JEFF again -

Take care of the nutritional stuff tomorrow, however you can best afford to do that.  Tonight's the big night for sleep (two nights out is more critical than the night before), so if you're reading this now --- GO TO BED!

And NO NEED TO ANSWER THIS, but have you got a good plan for the special needs bags?  Those can be godsends, with the bike one best for heavier-duty food things (I had p.b. and grape jelly sandwiches in mine, along with a water bottle of Perpetuem powder and a bottle of just water, which i took the 15 seconds to dump into the Perp powder and there I had fresh protein drink with no risk of it "turning" due to sitting in the heat too long), and the run one good for gels and other smaller "treats".  And, also, a piece of warmer clothing, if your race is going longer than desired and/or the forecast is for significant temp drops during the evening.

Again, i'll be thinking of you on Saturday, and I plan to be home to "track" you (still haven't looked to see if tracjking is available, although I'm assuming it is.)

GO TO BED!!!!!!

I know a couple of people that have rentals in the area. I'll ask around. Another place to check out is vrbo.com. Bring your wetsuit and I'll swim around the Santa Cruz pier with you...if the sharks have left town

GEORGE -

Nice run plan/effort/result, and based on how it went I would say (a) you can safely add time tomorrow and Saturday and (b) you will really enjoy having those others guys to run with and pace against.  I'll be very interested to hear how that run goes (and tomorrow's as well).

How's your water out there?  The Rideau is rapidly cooling, and with today's high air temp of only 14C..........it'll be nippy.  Once the water gets to around 65F, it is pretty imperative that the air temp is at least a few degrees warmer just so my cold&wet hands aren't slicing through colder air each and every stroke cycle.  Sadly, i'm getting close to that time of year!

Soon, the kayak/canoe buoys will be taken up by the Rideauu Canoe Club, and as that will coincide with the kind of conditions I just described.......I will get defeated by the prospect of OWS.  I will do a couple of lackluster "directionless" ones in a bay, feeling cold and all alone out there, and after that I'll just retire from OWS for the year.  That time is rapidly approaching, although having said that, I usually make it to about Oct 12, say.  Sigh.

Todays run was not too bad.  My HR started out a bit high (I always have my max HR in the 1st few minutes before it calms down).  Today it averaged out a bit higher than normal and I'm not sure why.  I ran/walked :05/:01 as planned for 10 times (two more than the last run).  I didn't try to run faster but in the end I think it was a bit faster again today.

One thing I noticed that I've never experienced before was in my last :05 run,  Somehow I time warped the run so it only felt like less than two minutes (whereas I normally find 5 minutes to feel more like 10 minutes (and my 1 minute walks feel like a solid 10 seconds long).  When I looked at my watch to see how much longer I had to run I was already at 5:36.

In the end I totalled 8.61km (5.35mi).

As for OWS we've had high winds on the lake so that brings the cold deeper waters up to the surface.  It probably would be fine for a couple more swims but on Wednesday we wimped out (due to high winds) and went to the pool for our 1st "Swim fit" of the season.  It was kind of nice to see everyone and talk to a couple ladies who did the same Sprints as me.

The pool is really nice but after OWS it sure felt strange.  And, it also felt like I had to start all over again in a lot of ways.

This morning I noticed the city has taken in the white swim buoys for the winter.  I was thinking I might try and go for a shallow water swim on Sunday.  By the way, we're having a fantastic September with temps around 27C (80F!?).

Our season here is completely over.  The only things I can find on the calendar are stand alone runs which I'm thinking of doing to try and increase my speed.  I did contact a local coach (Kevin Cutjar) to see about a winter indoor cycling program he offers.  It starts Nov 5th.

One of the fellows I've been swimming with lives in Penticton and St. George, Utah and he's invited us all to come down in December to run the Las Vegas Rock n Roll HM.  Considering I'm only running 8K now I doubt I'll participate but it does sound like fun and except for Point Roberts, Washington I've never been into the US.  Do they stamp our passports?

Swimming again tomorrow.

OMG.   Not the post I would like to be responding too.   They say things happen for a reason - hopefully it turns out to be a really good one for you and makes itself apparent real soon.

Sending you my very best wishes for the best day possible tomorrow.    You don't have any fat on you it seems, but I think if you go slow enough you can use fat for fuel.

TRINA,

Thanks for the cautionary words on the mountain biking.   Trust me, I will only be out on rail trails and beginner trails.    I do like a bit of excitement and adventure and actually have no fear on the bike - not sure if that is good or bad.      Ken and I are pretty excited about our travel plans next year so don't want to intentionally injury ourselves.

Best of luck to you tomorrow.   I'm sure you will have a great day.   Looking forward to hearing about it.

So I'm out in my garage in my pj's this morning performing some bike maintenance. Clean and lube the chain, make sure my Cateye is working, polish all the pretty parts, etc, and inspect the tires. While inspecting front tire I notice that it's dry rotted and split about six inches on the side, as well as a 3-4cm chunk missing from the middle! AH! Double AHH!! Take bike to LBS and replace tires ($150!) The new tires are supposed to be fast and puncture-resistant. I hope so....that was some scratch I wasn't planning on spending, so they'd better be good.

While at LBS I met the young lady who will be singing the National Anthem before the race tomorrow - she introduced herself to me when she heard me tell the mechanics I was doing Redman. She's doing the half, also. That was fun. I've already forgotten her name.

Went to the Expo and packet pickup. Racked bike and checked-out the swim start. It's in the middle of the lake again this year....lots of red mud and clay to run through tomorrow for sure. I also saw the Oklahoma Dept of Environmental Quality's pickup parked out there. Hopefully they don't find any reason to cancel the swim, because we've had a bit blue green algae in our city lakes recently. Keeping fingers crossed.

I took a picture of the the lake's boat ramp that has "Water 1 mile" written on it with an arrow pointing toward the middle of the almost dried-up lake, but I can't seem to post it here for some reason.

Oh yes it will be. And the guest bed has a top of the line Serta mattress, with pillows from the Nordstrom home furnishings collection. With a very slight hint of lavender. 800 thread count sheets.
