Terps421 - 2011-09-01 6:05 PM Kim made a good point DJ, a lot of people say, "Trust in the plan". The plans work for so many different athletes and you can modify your plan to accomodate your current fitness level and health : )

Yes, that Kim is full of sage advice! Wink

So Fatty, that's what the IM Florida swim start looks like?  Man is it wide!  Is it an out and back in the ocean?  While I'm not interested in doing that race--too flat for this hill chaser, I could definitely be persuaded to be the whip snapper to keep those in line who might be doing it!

DJ, glad things worked out on the bike issue.  Now go start training for the HM and stop worrying about something that hasn't even started yet!

IMFL is a two loop swim.  One big loop would put you out swimming with the big fishies...I mean sharks.  Actually, I know of some folks that have seen some sharks swim under them during the swim there, but they were only the little ones.

PCB is a nice vacation spot.  Just sayin'

julia said she's gonna crush you on the swim.  but you'll probably catch her 10 minutes later in t1.  then the race will be on.

all the kids will be cheering for me though.  they know whats up.

i just heard a canadian might be going back to canada not florida... scared.

love me short stuff in the bushes!  HA!

John you will love this...

267th worst T1 time!! out of 2854 racers. Thought you would like that. Not sure what i did, but that basically bottom 9% of racers.
Everyone has been asking me about it, but honestly no idea how i spent 9:47 in there. i didnt hit potty or anything.
T2 though I was in the top half of the group. I rock!
I'll get a RR together sometime.

Returned home to a dark house and a 30 minute power outage.  When the power returned the AC isn't working.  Did I mention it was 80 degrees here?  Welcome home Tracy.  Once again, thank goodness for warm weather training. Wink

I'm taking the weekend off training and hoping my knees finally calm down, I didn't train yesterday and they feel almost normal today so finger's crossed??!!

I've got 8 weeks to train for the Noosa Triathlon (oly) so should be plenty of time. Do you think I should skip the speed work for a few weeks or do short speed sessions in the week and long easy rides/runs on the weekend (my personal choice)??

By the way, that picture of the Seal and his dog makes me really sad, I spent 3 years in the navy and served in the Persian Gulf and I met quite a few Navy Seals, they're the best.

I spent some time today reading Hammer's nutrition information and am a little concerned about how to handle my HIM nutrition.   So far I have only done Olys and my nutrition was pretty simple - one powergel about 15 minutes in on the bike and another an hour in on the bike along with about 20 oz of 50% diluted sports drink over the course of the ride.   That was enough to fuel my run and I just drank 10-12 oz of water over the course of the run.

My initial plan for the HIM was to take a powergel every 30 minutes on the bike and on into the run.  After reading the Hammer articles, it sounds like I may be asking for trouble by going powergel (simple sugars as opposed to the complex carbs in the Hammer products).   I would appreciate your thoughts.   Either course (powergel or Hammer) is going to be a first relative to the volume of the nutrition consumed.   Do I stick with the powergel idea or order up some Hammer (not available here in Japan, but I can probably have some in hand prior to the race).

Thanks,

Dan

I'm a Hammer user (Sustained Energy and Gel as a concentrate) and have done quite well using these during HIMs.  I recently began to add another gel brand that contains something more than Malodextrin based on the recommendation of my sports nutritionist.  She is not a fan of Malodextrin, apparently it is an extremely cheap sugar and over time your gut isn't as receptive to it.   Her recommendation was to also use sucrose or glucose based products which I have also done successfully (GU vanilla or EFS Shot).  I eat no solids during a HIM and only a tiny amount during an IM.

I think you will get many opinions here and honestly test various options early to find the right combo for you.

PS.  Talk to Tracy--those apples and beef jerky seem to be her go to!

Awesome! I'm in, pending approval from the family.

As for you, John, I said no such thing about crushing anybody on any swim, although the part about T1 might be true. And what was that picture? A shark feeding frenzy?

I want to do this one!  But I also want to do Vineman 70.3 which is one week after.  Will assess after the season is over...like in about 10 days!!!

Ah yes, the approval from the family.... I mentioned this event to my pregnant wife, her response was surprisingly not entirely lacking support.

I'm putting my name on the definite-maybe list.  I'd really like to get back into training mode and having a big, new goal on the calendar might just be the motivation that I need.  I'm officially giving the group permission to harass me about this.

David - I hope you're able to get back to running soon! I wouldn't do any speed work, but carefully rebuild run volume. Others might have a different approach, though. Good luck!

I'm a little late here but thanks for the picture John. I had not had a chance to see that. I spent a number of years in the Canadian Air Force and we have way too many of our soldiers both Canadian and American ( and all the other countries involved) coming home in caskets. I am a very firm supporter of "If you don't stand behind our troops feel free to stand in front of them. " .

Just thought I would share a story about TERRIBLE customer service I received!  I ordered some coffee online from http://www.vendovicoffee.com/ yesterday and the guy I ordered it from (Cadmus/Matt) called me in the afternoon and had the nerved to ask me if I used creamer in my coffee?!  I told him that I did then the guy had the nerve to tell me I ordered the wrong type of coffee to go with creamer.  Something about the creamer drowning out the taste of the coffee or some nonsense like that!!!  Whatever... Just send me what you think I'll like!  What a jerk telling me (THE CUSTOMER) that I am wrong!

SO ANNOYING, but then I get home today and..... A BOX on my doorstep.  It's my coffee already!!!!

Matty!!! I have not tried the coffee yet but I really appreciate the timeliness, the recommendation, and the smell of this fresh coffee in my house!  I am wishing you the best on this adventure... And to all others who drink coffee...... COME ON KNOW!! SUPPORT YOUR TEAM!!
