powerman - 2012-11-21 1:54 PM So what is the story with building your own? Is it just like everything else... DIY, use the parts you want... or is it cheaper, or what?

My first impression is and I don't believe it's an apples to apples comparison but more of a project and learning experience, knowing what makes it tick,,,, or go boom.

It looks like there are some significant differences between twist rate on the barrel, I'm not sure of the benefits and drawbacks of each, the load/grain of bullet you are shooting and what your intended purpose play into getting the correct twist.

Metal or Poly lower, with the quality of poly, I'm leaning to the poly. I saw a complete poly lower for about $100. the pic showed a butt stock included, I don't know if it was or not. I can't find it now though.

I wasn't aware of what it appears how easy it is to change uppers and it looks like you can just as easily change calibers when changing uppers. Although uppers are pretty dang expensive.

I also got to looking at the AK's a lot of appeal there both cost and cost of ammo....

Anyway, lots of stuff to explore, thanks to everyone for the tips and info.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone

ETA Found it

I am so jealous of you all while reading through this thread. I miss my M4 from my Army days and I cant wait to have the money to build my own AR. My goal job once I get done with school is to get a job with Colt to work on designing new and better firearms. God do I miss shooting.

Looks like it has a mount available on top?  You had time to shoot yet?

Have it all with me right now incase I can drop into a rsnge Might loan the Burris to a buddy for a few days to try it out. I'm slammed over the weekend but have all next week off work. Might need to restock my ammo supply and spend some quality range time next week to try it out. We have a 200 yd range a couple of miles from our house I can drop in to.
