We've got plenty of hills here in central Virginia. Here's an easy 20 miler, with about 1600' of climbing -- a couple of nice pulls on that:

If you want epic, check out this century loop:

In Miami, the other "silicone" valley, the only hills we have are denoted as D, DD and up.  We do have what we call "Miami Mountain" which is a bridge leading to one of the keys.  It is a hot spot for cyclists and many tri's are held on this key with the bike leg going over the bridge and back.  Here's a pic of the "mountain" and the view from the top of the mountain....pretty nice.

I live near Denver, so even though you would think there are routes that are flat if you don't ride in the mountains, it's not so. There are hills everywhere. I've been bad this summer and have done most of my training on my mountain bike on the trails because mountain biking is a lot more fun then road riding, at least in my opinion. But those mountain bike rides aren't easy. Tons of climbing along with having to go over rocks and roots and all that.

My road rides usually consist of riding in the foothills, so it's usually up and down and up and down or sometimes I ride up a mountain and then back down. So hills are a common occurance, I can't imagine doing a ride without some of them anymore. I'll have to do more training on my road bike for my next tri, I just hate to miss all my summer mountain bike riding.

Next year I plan on doing a road ride that goes over 3 mountain passes. Total 6000 feet of climbing, 78 miles, elevation changes from 9000 feet up to 12000 feet. That will be challenging for me, but it should be a lot of fun! DH is going to do it with me.

Here's a recent, fairly typical club ride in our area...

Will gmaps give elevation in feet or just the graphic?  I haven't found it if it does,,,,,
