LMAO too!  The smoker from last season was one of my favorites all time.

BTW, I saw a commercial for the new season of "The Amazing Race".  Im not really a fan of the show, but one of the teams will be a husband and wife who are triathletes.

See my other post, not only triathletes, but Sarah Reinertsen, amputee and Kona finisher.  The guy (not sure they're married) made her prosthesis

HAVE read Guns, Germs, and Steel, great book, agreed.  HAVEN'T watched much Survivor, must confess.  Not a TV person.

You're right in this:  I DON'T have any spectacularly logical reason why the racial segregation would bother me more than the gender segregation.  History has obviously included pernicious examples of both.  So I need to think about that, why it's so visceral.

Maybe because I live a gender- but not race-segregated life?   Yeah I live with 2 other people, we are all women but 3 different backgrounds.   Maybe I just don't like this because I'm subconciously thinking, "whoa! How far would I get on a team with all white people?"  That's a specious answer to a serious question, I know.

Try this:  because I face little (some, but not terrible) gender discrimination going through life, but my black roommate deals with it ALL the time.  We have our own stream of "gallows humor" about SWB:  shopping while black.  They have stopped her outside of our local grocery store THREE TIMES now to make sure she wasn't stealing anything.  I forgot to get a gift receipt for her birthday gift and am REALLY hoping it fits, because it it doesn't I will need to return it for her - don't even THINK about returning an item without a receipt if you are SWB!  And the list goes on.

And now my city is debating an ordinance to require cops to stop people to ask if they are illegal immigrants or not - who do you think they are supposed to stop?  Me?  Heck no!  They're supposed to stop my wonderful American citizen Salvadorena housemate.  Why should she be required to carry her ID to walk around the block and when i'll never need to?

So maybe it is this constant barrage of daily indignities I see based on race that makes me more sensitive to race-segregating than to gender-segregating the game.  Hope that helps.  Thanks for challenging me to think about it though.

Peace!

I just think this is a bad idea. I am a Survivor fan from the first season but I think this is wrong.

I think it's just a very clear sign that they have completely run out of decent ideas and it's time to can the show.

This discussion...that's one of the reasons they are doing it. Coincidentially, I was in a diversity training today. The instructor loved the idea-he's thinks it's going to make people talk more about the issue--and, in a nutshell, make for a more diverse crowd...Anyway, when the game starts, it's never about race, gender, age, whatever-it's about competition! And, I love Survivor, so I can't wait for it to start.

I think's going to make people short circuit. "Who do I root for? If I'm white and I root for the whites, is that racist? If I'm white and root for another race, if that just weird? If I'm hispanic, what if I just don't like the people on the hispanic team? Do I have to root for them? *hyperventilate*"

I'm just kidding around, so don't bust my proverbial balls.

you have proverbial balls?  proverbial balls and pick axes.........  what a life you lead

Theoetically, there is no physiological difference between a black man, a white man, an asian man, etc.

There are phyisological differences between a man and a woman, however, as much as the ACLU would like us all to think otherwise (and VIVE LA DIFERENCE!  I say)

racial segregation would seem to be solely for the purpose of segregation

Last time it was Old Gals, Young Gals, Old Guys and Young Guys.  I remember one of the gals didn't think she should have been in the Old Gal group.

It's going to be great!
