I get your point.....but that hard ID isn't very important either right after everything you have is gone. Our house burned on a Sunday.....we had new ID's the next day...easy as can be. My point in this thread is that NONE of that stuff is really nearly as important as we think it is. But I don't think it's a bad thing to grab a wallet or purse on the way to safety. I didn't have time. BUT....I did grab a stack of dishes.....I'm not kidding....to this day it cracks me up whenever I think about it. But that's the point... if you don't have time, who cares? If I wake up with my house on fire, I'm not grabbing anything but the wife and dogs. Will it be the end of my life, no. But if I have time, then why not have some key things? Can they be replaced, yes. Can I just have them and save myself time from dealing with government agencies...yes. Can I reaplace my DL, yes. Do I love vollunteering my time to sit at DMV, no. I do have a fireproof safe with all of the passport, birth cert., etc in it. But that thing is heavy and in the opposite direction of the exits. I'm grabbing my wallet and my dogs and leaving. It's fireproof, so I should be able to come back for it all. |

If the EMP wipes out all the servers I'll have bigger things to worry about. Which is precisely why the B.O.B. has guns and cash. |

In there are passports, DD-214, titles, POA etc. But what I have yet to hear people mention is very important (found out after my mom's place burned down). I go through the house and video all of my stuff (min 1x/year). This provides evidence to the insurance company of what you had. Let's do a simple experiment: Right now, how many technical shirts do you have in your house? How many pairs of fancy shoes? We pay insurance for a reason, don't guess as to what you have...have proof! I open each drawer, all closets, attic, etc. |
