Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I really enjoy music but life is too busy to just listen to it as often as I would like. I love running for lots of reasons, and the opportunity to be on my own, with my thoughts and my music is one of them – always wear my ipod and it adds a lot of pleasure to my running. Can I run without it - yes, but I don’t want to. lol, I certainly don't believe I am any less a 'runner' because I like my ipod! I use it on the trainer if I'm not watching tv, and don't use it swimming 'cause I don't have the right gear, and I think I like the sensory deprivation of the water! |

![]() | ![]() always while running. and most of the time when riding my bike. so much better than listening to the sound of cabs honking and sirens ringing. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have one, but I use it in the car, but not with headphones ‘cause that’s illegal. The reason I don’t use one when I workout is I live in an areas that is surrounded by woods and wet lands and there are often deer about. This gives me two good reasons not to use one, I wouldn't want to get gored by Bambi and I’m easily startled. So if I’m not rocking out its more likely I would be able to see and/or hear the deer and avoid it before it either startled me or gored me. Not to mention I can hear when the cars are coming up behind me and I can brace for impact. (And yes I have been hit, three times, first was a white Toyota, the second was a Police car, and the third was a black mazda.) As for swimming with an iPod that is a pain and just not worth it, I just swim faster to get through the drudgery. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jessm - 2009-08-11 9:47 AM I know we've done the ipod/mp3 discussion on here before, and some wear it all the time, some only when not in traffic, while some disagree with it completely...but there was this freak accident here last week that was really sad and something to think about regarding the value of being as aware of your surroundings as possible... I heard about that case. I agree it is tragic, but I also don't know that it was because she was wearing an iPod. When I was in medical school in Philly, I remember a forensic lecture where there was a woman who was found in Fairmount Park with a lethal head injury. As we students guessed about it being a mugging gone bad, the pathologist told us that she was killed by a piece of concrete that fell from the bridge as she happened to be going under it. This is in a pre-mp3/earbud era; she just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Also, even if you hear a tree branch crack, whose to say that you move in the right direction. Maybe stepping to the side puts you in the PATH of the tree branch. Maybe you stop and glance up? If the branch was heavy enough to crush the skull, even putting your hands over your head would not be too helpful. Just not sure that blaming the music is the right way to go. |

I have often said things like "I'm not built to run." Lately, I have to admit that I actually like it. I'm not sure why but I actually look forward to my run. I'm not even good at running. I was just able to run a 10 min/mile on a 3 mile run and yet I still like it. When I started training, I figured I would like the bike the most, figure out the swim and hate the run. Now.. I look forward to the run, love the swim, and I'm nervous about how to get faster on the bike. LOL WTF? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I use it for weight training.. the music selection puts me in a zone.. i use it sometimes while running.. if i need a little more motivation.. its a must on the dreadmill.. |

![]() ![]() | ![]() Almost always when I run/bike for training...sometimes during the run during road races or tri's...never during swimming (b/c I don't have the equpiment)! I run MUCH faster when the music is on... |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I used to always use mine while running. Now I find it gets on my nerves. But I am not running nearly as long anymore. I would still use it for hideously long runs (anything over an hour or so). I do like to listen to it in the weight room to drown out what is playing in the background and to discourage conversation. I don't have much time to spend on strength and don't feel like wasting my precious minutes running my mouth instead of working out. Pam |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I guess I'm a jogger too. I am not a runner and could easily make a lot of excuses to do somethign else, so I need something to distract me and motivate me to keep my legs moving. I need a positive sound to drown out the negative voices in my head. Never use it wil biking or swimming though. |

Very true, it might have happened anyway, and they don't know for sure it wouldn't have happened w/o the music...but that'd make me think twice about running w/ my mp3 (well, if I owned one). |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Only when riding my bike trainer on days with hard power intervals - sometimes the beat is useful when trying to hold a set wattage/cadence. Never outdoors. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() I always use the Ipod on a run and on a trainer, rarely but sometimes on a bike when I'm riding Van Fleet which is a rails to trails ride that has no car traffic and little other traffic beyond the first couple of miles. I also will load a workout for weights some times with a coached session. |
