Subject: RE: Phil gives it awayWell, Phil said it best himself in an interview afterwards I think: I'm an idiot: Mickelson Tuesday, 20 June 2006 @ 7:45 AM sportal.com.au US Open runner-up Phil Mickelson has described himself as an 'idiot' after double bogeying the last hole to hand Geoff Ogilvy his maiden Major victory.
The World No.2 was in disbelief after shooting a six at the 72nd hole to give the Australian a win a one shot win, Ogilvy finishing at five-over.
"I still am in shock that I did that, I just can't believe that I did that, I'm such an idiot," Mickelson said.
"I couldn't hit a fairway all day and I tried to go to my bread and butter shot which is just a big baby carve slice on 18 and just get it in the fairway and I missed it left."
After four days of tough golf at Winged Foot, Mickelson felt he had done enough to win until his meltdown at the 18th.
"I came out here and worked so hard so many days, I hadn't made a bogey all week and then bogeyed the last hole, I just can't believe it," he said.
"I mean even a bogey would have got me into a playoff and I just can't believe I did that."
The win would have made Mickelson holder of three of the four golfing Majors, with only the British Open not in his grasp.
"As a kid I dreamt of winning this tournament," he said.
"I just can't believe I couldn't par the last hole, it really stings."
