Now for your buddy who put 10 minutes, I'll bet the athletes around him won't know what it means when you get tapped on the feet and he probably won't have this luxury and will just have to pass. Then again people around him may be holding on and resting at the walls anyways.

Although that far down there aren't going to be too many people. Heck, there may even be faster people here that registered late.

Just remember to communicate while you wait in line. I do that before every pool swim, so when I tap the feet of the guy in front of me, we already talked about it and he knows what to do.

Otherwise just do the ankle, stroke, shoulder, stroke routine. While swimming, grab their ankle with your arm and pull, take a stroke with your other arm, grab their shoulder with your arm and push, take a stroke with your other arm. Not the nicest thing to do during a race, but if they are going to be a jerk and not let you pass after you told them you would be tapping their feet, so be it.

Just got this email on the Blackland race on Sunday. It's now going to be setup as 50m pool. Super good news for all racing this weekend. Here's the email I got:

"Originally we were not able to move the bulkhead due to a rental the eveing before our race. That rental has now cancelled and we were able to change the configuration to use 50m snakes. We know you will be very excited about that! (New maps are on website) PARENTS: The youth will have to swim through some areas of deeper water. Although they should be able to swim their required lengths, we have added an extra roaming lifeguard for additional safety. "

What time did you seed yourself?  I ended up guessing at 4:45 and swam a 4:15 last night as a trial run, hopefully I wont get stuck either.  My friend guessed 10 minutes, he is going to get stuck big time.  I told him he needed to try to get that changed.  When you say "pass at the wall" does that mean you have been tapping feet and they stop at the side and let you pass?
I would definately try and get that changed but it is hard to say.  I have heard at some races during packet pickup they purposely leave some numbers out so people can move up or back if you wait til race day it will be more difficult.  I the St pattys tri in 07 and when I was warming up I almost got passed by a kid doing back stroke then I saw he was like #380 or something. I started to talk to him and asked his 100 time was , he pointed at the record wall.  He held th keller isd 100 meter record at like 49'.  I told him to talk to the RD and he wouldn't let him change.  He ended up starting almost last and tied for the fastest swim time.  I would have loved to see his time with open water.

I actually talked to Kristen Warner last weekend and she said originally they did not do 50m because of cost.  It was going to be $300 to move the bulkhead and since it was the first year they did not know how many people to expect so they did not want to absorb the cost.  The fact that 350 people or so signed up probably helped in their decision.  Either way I am extemely happy.

Wow, $300 to move the bulk-head and rearrange lane ropes. That sure seems high to me. They did it daily through-out the whole summer. Pool was setup long-course in the morning and then they changed it sometime for the afternoon.

One last silly question about the swim.  Do we do a diving start?  Or get in and then go?

Generally, they don't let you do the dive start.  You either sit on the edge and go it, jump feet first and some people do a running jump that looks like a dive but they more belly flop where their feet go in first.  I think the big thing is that your feet must go in first.  I have seen people dive though (apparently they don't listen well) and nothing happens.

I fully recommend the cannonball method of entry. I did this at the Cooper Summer Sprint and feel the crowd and other racers waiting there turn truly enjoyed the show. Haha. Lightened the mood and hey, I'm not winning anyways.

I think if anything everyone should just remember that almost all of us really just do this for fun, and we should all try to have some fun while racing.

I would say I will look to meet you tomorrow but I'm horrible with faces and probably wouldn't recognize you. But I am a tall skinny guy that is too lazy to shave so will sort of have a beard. Feel free to come up and introduce yourself. My race number is #207.

Hope everyone has a great day tomorrow!  I decided this week to forego this one (just some end-of-season blues), but I'll be out there cheering you on.  50m pool is sooo much better.  Reading this thread is almost making me wish I'd signed on.

Better times are posted here:

Sometimes that stupid mychiptime crap has weird formatting and the sorting doesn't work and it's hard to really pull up the results you want.

Sorry we did not get to meet. The wife and I got there a bit late and didn't have too much time to get our transitions setup and get a quick swim warmup in. Looks like you had yourself a pretty good race as well.

For everyone else, this race was definitely put on really well I thought, especially for a first year race. Lots of traffic control and lots and lots of cones. I liked this as in some races it seems the cones are really spread out and sometimes cars like going in between them, not so here. Traffic was pretty heavy at one intersection, but the cops and volunteers looked to have everything well under control. Burgers and beer(for those who drink) after the race was pretty sweet too.

Thanks for the result link, I hate mychiptime, they get results up quickly but the format stinks.

I agree the race was well run I only have a few small complaints.

-Transition too far from finish (especially for spectators)
-Yes there wer alot of cones but I made a wrong turn because of the way they were set up
-Music too loud (Am I getting old?)
-My hamburger was not near being cooked (and I will eat raw steak)
-Too many fast guys in my AG

Apparently there was a problem with the swim splits.  They only have 250 people listed with an actual swim time so 150+ have a huge T1 time.

I think all these can be answered with one simple word:
Pansy!

Ok, seriously:

-Transition too far from finish (especially for spectators)

Ok, the finish was pretty far off. Though the finish area was kinda cool, the walk bike to our bikes did suck a bit. Not sure what they can do there other than move the finish closer to the transition, but then lose the amphitheater finish area.

-Yes there wer alot of cones but I made a wrong turn because of the way they were set up

Well that was your fault for not knowing the race course, right? Or maybe you should have been listening during the pre-race meeting? Haha.

-Music too loud (Am I getting old?)

Actually I thought it was loud too. Best part after a race is hanging out and BS'n with everyone else. A little tough to do. Off to the sides where the speakers weren't directly pointed was a bit better.

-My hamburger was not near being cooked (and I will eat raw steak)

That does kind of suck, though mine and Sabrina's were fine. Maybe they saw you coming and just didn't like the look of a big fellow like you and they all said "Hey, be sure and give this giant a sh1tty burger"

-Too many fast guys in my AG

In Jack's famous words, "Train harder".

Yes, I am a big pansy but I can't help it.

Actually the transition distance was not that bad but at one point my wife was going to come with my 2 kids (5 yr and 5 weeks) and it would have been a pain in the ARSE for her so I am glad she did not come and if I race next year this is what would keep her from coming.  (kind of like the Ironhead races at Joe pool lake,  you either have to get there early or walk 2 miles).

Course was definately my fault  but they way the had the cones turning around the bend to keep cars out of our lanes was a bit confusing luckily I caught myself quickly though.

We'll see if anything changes for next year. It's always good to email the RD to give constructive criticism at least. The event had ton of racers and volunteers and I would have to say for a first year event was a great success. I hope it keeps on for next year. The more races in the area the better for us and for the sport in general.

Good points on all.  My friend was one of the ones that the swim split didnt work, he was pretty upset.  I just backed down his time using my transition time and figured/guessed it.

Courses were a little hard to understand, luckily I went the week before and figured it out.  Made my mistakes that day.

Not only was the music too loud, it was distorted.  Band was good/fun, but would have been better if it were clear and not so loud (although it was nice to hear it coming down the hill on the run.

I couldnt stomach a burger right after, but my 2 year old seemed to enjoy it.  I went over to Kelly's Restaurant later and had a good burger.  Nice to hit up a local place I normally wouldnt have a chance to go to.  Saw some other cars in the Ave K area with bikes from the race.

Finish line was pretty far from the parking.  I didnt think so before the race, but after carrying my 35lb son the whole way back to my wife's car, then going back to the finish line to meet up with my friend.....whew....

Definitely a lot of fast people there.  I just stop looking at my times after my swim split, ha.  Got me pumped to get on the bike and run more since I have been focusing on the swim mainly and it paid off.  Probably need to get a trainer since it is hard for me to get out during daylight on the bike.

I thought the race was fantastic. Swim was good, although I think they could have made it faster by switching the lane order so you end by the door instead of having to run the length of the pool to get outside. But that's a minor quibble, especially since everyone had to do the same thing. I actually can't remember if there is a ladder on the other end, so maybe that's the reason.

I liked the bike course. Other than having nothing in my legs thanks to being sick, it was a blast. They may want to try to reconfigure it to have only right turns to prevent traffic problems though. I heard a few people say cars were pulling out in front of them, especially on the stretch on 14th where we were in the left lane turning right. Also know some people (including my wife) were actually forced to stop and let cars go by. That sucks.

Run course rocked. I love to run with a net elevation loss.

My favorite part of the whole thing was the babysitting. Apparently not a lot of people used it, but for both of us to be able to race without sending the kids away for a weekend ROCKED.

Oh, one more thing. These guys already have a better idea how to do a race shirt than the race group that shall not be mentioned. Not a white shirt. Fits like a normal shirt should. Won't end up in my rag pile in the garage any time soon. Can't say that about the race group that shall not be mentioned.

Good point about the swim finish, didnt think about that.  With the way the water emptied at the side, it wouldnt be hard to get out without a ladder, although safety of the group probably would be better with the ladder.

The traffic on 14th was a little scary, many cars did pull out to turn around, but luckily they werent too close to me although I did go cautiously through that area.  Right turns would have helped minimize the traffic back up.

My wife doesnt race, but if she did, that daycare would have been great.  Apparently when I ran by my son, he ended up running after me thinking that he was racing.  Cute pics of him doing it.  I have 5 years to get him trained for the 7yo race.

Completely agree about the t-shirts.  This was a nice looking one, unlike the other one we dare not mention, ha.

My uneducated guess about the swim exit is that if we would have entered on the other side you would have jumped in off the bulkhead and there was a sign by it saying not to walk on it.  They probably didn't want 410+ people walking on it. That plus the fact you would have landed in like 3 ft deep water might have caused injuries by people jamming knees, etc.
