Trust me, you got it backwards.

Texas and I had a mutual affinity for each other. I loved most of it. The eight-hour drives through West Texas weren't awesome.

We don't take too kindly to your kind 'round here, son.....

When people in Texas say `It's just down the road.' that means an eight-hour drive. Or in Texas speak: `A couple cases of beer.'

If this is gonna mutate into a Texas nostalgia thread... I remember one time in college being  on a Wisconsin to Cali road trip. 5 of us in a Honda Civic. We took the southern route on the way out there and I remember feeling like I was in the sea looking all the way to the horizon.  Freaked me out!!!

What they don't tell you is that there are 4 trees in West Texas.

True story and "fixin ta" doesn't mean they are getting ready to anytime soon.  It means "maybe someday I'll do that."

Holy carp I forgot about that -- I actually picked up that gem. My friend here would say `Why do you need to fix to do anything, just do it!' Good people down there, though they often overestimate their ability to play football.

Imagine that you've just crossed into Texas from Louisiana.  You've probably been driving at least since New Orleans on I-10 for about 3.5 hours.  You look up and try to resist the urge to commit Hari Kari:

But why would you want to go to El Paso any way?  I've been there, you really aren't missing anything!

You're probably a truck driver in this little scenario - I'd just stop at the winery - it can't possible be as bad as 857 miles.

Texarkana, TX is closer to Chicago than it is to El Paso

And El Paso is closer to LA than Beaumont.
