At 20 dollars, while it's certainly not cheap - it's a decent insurance policy to make sure I can get back to my rental car. I'm just considering it a "vacation expense." ![]() |

Subject: RE: Los Angeles Triathlon200 feet in about half a mile. It is steep; you will see tons of people walking (possibly the majority, depending on when you arrive), and some who run will be throwing up at the top. Just keep your stride short and keep breathing till you get to Disney Hall.

Veteran 217![]() ![]() Redondo Beach, CA | Subject: RE: Los Angeles TriathlonSpoiler Alert! Don't read any further if you don't want to know what the LA Tri run course is like. I ran the Olympic distance run course this morning to get a feel for the terrain. As you probably already know this is a 2 lap out-and-back course. There's good news and bad news. The good news is that the second half of each lap is almost all downhill, with the last 1/4 mile being flat. Because most of the downhill is very gradual, you can really pick up some good speed. The bad news is that after the flat first 1/4 mile of each lap you are running up a steady, although gradual, incline along Grand Ave. That part is tolerable, but it only lasts about 2/3 of a mile. Where it actually gets bad is when the incline begins to get steeper as you cross 6th Street, and then it goes from bad to worse when the street makes a sharp increase in the incline half a block later. But then, as you cross 5th Street, the incline gets much steeper still. This extreme incline lasts only a 1/4 mile, but it seems much longer. Once you reach the crest of the hill you get a short, almost flat stretch of about 1/4 mile to the turn around point in front of Disney Concert Hall. So the challenge on this course is the steep section of hill going up Grand Ave from 6th Street to about half way between 4th and 3rd Streets. When I did this tri 2 years ago, this is where I saw a lot of people walking. Now with the redesigned course, you go up this hill twice. First at about .87 miles, then again at about 4.1 miles. On a positive note, the rest of the course is no real challenge, and with the long mile and a half downhill stretch to the finish, you'll more than make up the time you lost on the steep hill section. |

Thanks for the heads up on the run. Race plan is to leave a little in the tank for the hills. This sounds like the hill at the end of the AFC Half Marathon. |

Even though the two different T areas, it is pretty simple. Since this is your first, keep in mind that your T1 will be much slower than other races. You will have to quickly pack up your gear so the race volunteers can load it on a bus to drop it off after the race. Also, remember, you will have two gear bags one for T1 and one for T2. I am thinking that this year I am just going to use a plastic bag for my T2 bag (shoes, socks, race hat, race belt, etc). Where my T1 bag will be my normal Transition bag. I'll be there as a volunteer at the start area again this year--not sure exactly what my job will be, but might be handing out chips again. Good race, everybody! |

where did you get that info? From the website? I guess I'm worrying about something for the sake of worrying. They've put me in wave 10, fl green, but I should be going about 10 years earlier. Edited by redrunner 2008-09-06 7:47 PM |

Master 1890![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Cypress, CA | Subject: RE: Los Angeles TriathlonDon't be surprised if by wave 4 or 5 they start running behind on start times. LA Lifeguards ususally want to limit the number of people in the water at one time, so they'll start delaying wave starts until enough people get out of the water. It's not uncommon for them to get 15-20 minutes or more behind on the later waves. |

Transition areas open at 4:30am. I think T1 is actually the main Venice Beach parking lot at the end of Venice Blvd, so you might have to drive north or south a bit to the next parking lots over to find parking. Don't know how fast it will fill up - I plan on riding my bike down to the start tomorrow morning since my wave starts so late anyway. If you want to watch, I'd get there early and find parking somewhere in the lot, then drive down the 10 freeway toward downtown to find parking at the Convention Center/Staples Center area to watch the bike/run transitions and finishes. The actual LA Triathlon website lists recommended spectator areas here: http://www.latriathlon.com/athlete.html Just scroll down to the section that says "SOME OF THE BEST SPOTS TO WATCH THE RACE"

Omega and hundoracer were talking Hunter Kemper's ear off! Honestly, I'm a little more nervous for this race than I was. I am in the LAST wave. Since I am about as back-of-the-pack as it gets, I fear I'll be out there alone for the bike and run! Usually I have waves behind me to help buffer that. Plus, there is a noon cutoff time. I'm expecting to go about three hours, which only gives me a 20 minute window for any unforseen anything or for late start times. I hope if they start late that they bump back that noon time. But, I'm trying not to get discouraged and just have fun. Hope to see you all out there! I'll be there bright and early to watch the pros start! |

I have to agree , It was great to race this one again and the new sections on the bike course were really fun with a ton of rollers . The pavement on Wilshire was disastrous . The swim iN and Out were finally clearly separated like it should have always been . T2 and Finish area were Great and I placed in the sprint so I had a good day. Could not buy a bus tix at the expo so ended up ridding back down Venice after the race. |
