kimmitri408 - 2008-08-12 10:00 PM wow, did anyone catch the graphic that says just TODAY he's swimming 5 miles between warm ups, races, and cool downs??? that blows my mind.
YES!! And that's on a race day! Ha ha. Dude does nothing but eat, swim, sleep. Oh what a life.

i'm just in awe.  i mean i've watched swimming before but it didn't really mean anything to me.  i was just a runner - these distances seemed like nothing.  now, after learning to swim, i'm just in awe.  no wonder he eats so many calories in one day!

Holding my breath ....

That was beautiful swimming. Beautiful.

I was working on my butterfly tonight. I think I'm going to study the youtubes-to-come of his performance.

I've heard it wasn't that effective for the fly or breast.  By heard I mean I think I remember one of the commentators mentioning it.  I've got no idea about the physics behind it.

Hmmmm. Both butter and breast require the chest to come way out of the water. I thought the suit was meant to provide less friction than the human skin. Hmmmm ...

So therefore the more of the body not in the water the less effective... I dunno.  Maybe all the little grooves and stitchcing weren't designed to flow with the different body movement of those strokes.

Yeah but the upper body is moving up and out A LOT in these two events.

Maybe the stitching and grooves like you said? Would be interesting to learn more about the dynamics of the full-body suit.

I think I may do some googling.  You've raised a question I've got to have answered, and the internet can tell you anything!

Heard that too - they said it's most effective in back & free. Plus if they really only last a few swims it would make sense to save them for the races where they're gonna give you the most help. I dunno how many they have on reserve but they were talking last night or the night before about how one of the women's suits "blew up" where the zipper actually ripped. Happened to her in the prelims and she still qualified for finals. I wanna say 200 free? Don't remember which swimmer though.

So maybe it's all the extra movement in the back that they're worried about.  Google is yielding nothing for me.

I assumed they must not be as effective for fly and breast, or else Phelps et al would have been wearing the full-body during the fly.

The question is ... why? Maybe I should google too. Or check swimmingworld.com or others.

And again...the American's rolled it up and SMOKED IT with a major world record...you know, they're pulling softball from the olympics cause the US always always has won...next thing you know they'll pull swimming if Phelps stays in it...

Is that why they did that? Was it the same thing for baseball too? I figured it was just because baseball takes so stinkin long...

It seems so absurd that they won by such a large margin. And, yet again, smashed the World Record!

I noticed that 3 of the 4 have a similar cadence to their stroke. Interrrrresting ....

Oh yeah ... WOOT PHELPS!

Something about world appeal for baseball...similiar to softball, but part of that was, if no one but the US was ever going to win (w/Aus and Japan going 2/3)...then really it was just a 3 country sport. Considering sball won a game under the mercy rule of 11-0 yesterday....Sad..I love softball...

--Back to Superman, I mean Michael Phelps--And yes, how is it that they can blow the field and WR away like that?!?! Simply awesome! GO TEAM USA!

It was mainly because they were pizzed at MLB for not suspending the season so all the countries could use their best players.  Softball got lumped in with it.

Anyway, another smashed WR.  Awesome.

It was as if Morgan Freeman was watching the games with us!! So eerie! No wonder he played God in Bruce Almighty.

MP and his mates won by a wider margin this time.. Not as fun to watch.
