Anyone NOT doing this race, we're a little lean so far on volunteers for the bike course so far.  If you want to help out, PM for details.  Tongue out

I went out to run the Poto today and boy was that fun . A few observations... Good news - they were filling holes on Hankerd today. Bad news - they weren't filling all of them. More bad news - The run still suuuucks! Oh, and it seems like there are a lot more trees branches, vines, and other brush hanging low over the trail than in the past. If you are tall there is a lot of ducking going on for the first couple miles.

Yep, I ran the trail, too.  Good thing I'm short.
And slow.

Actually, the run was fine.  Except for the hills.  And the roots.

Can't wait to do it again after swimming and biking.

Good times

I am curious if it was easy to find your way having never been?I plan on going there tomorrow to get the loop in, and I have never been. The hand drawn map above looks like it may help, as long as I enter in the correct spot.

You can't miss the entry spot to the trail, it's basically directly across from the entrance to the Half Moon Beach area.  I used to run there quite abit and the only thing I can't recall off hand is the area near Pickeral Lake that heads off the Crooked Lake Trail and heads towards the #2 aid station.  But if you don't see that the Crooked Lake Trail will get you back fine too.  If you go out during this nice weekend there will be plenty of MTB'ers out there and they can hopefully lead you the right way if needed.

Sorry I just got back from Indy...

Yes, the hand-drawn map was AWESOME!
I did have to stop at nearly every "intersection" to make sure I was heading the right way, and the only part I wasn't SURE about was when we go off the CROOKED lake trail to the SILVER lake trail.  That part isn't very clearly marked, so we ended up running a little bit more on the dirt road/parking lot near pickerel lake than I think we were supposed to.

I don't think it messed with the mileage too much, but we MAY have missed a hill or two instead.  (I am ashamed)

I guess I'll find out in 2 weeks, eh?

Cheryl if you and Eric are going to go out there on the 31st I should be able to meet up with you.  I've run the trails before so I pretty much know what to expect with that, but I'd like to do the bike ride so I've got an idea just how bad the roads are.

I hope I was at the right place, but the trail didn't seem as bad as I thought it was going to be, but I only did the first 2 miles of it. Does it get worse after that "lookout" hill? I'm going to try to run the whole thing again in a few days.

Does anyone else have time during the week to do this? I'm doing this during the day on either Thursday (tomorrow), or Friday AM.

The roads were great! Except Hanckard. Is that the only rough patch?
Last, where does one park for this? There'll be little to no parking at the park itself, I imagine.

There is an area on the second half of the bike course that gets really bumpy. I have not been out there this year to check it out. I will also be out there tomorrow but can't make it til 6:30pm or so to bike and run or just run depending how I feel.

I think the trail is tough-ish in general, but I can't remember exactly which miles are the worst...seems like the first mile was pretty flat and just sort of switchback-y, then there's the big hill...some roots, some more hills, I remember one other tough hill, then more roots, hills, and switchbacks.  I'm pretty klutzy and managed to take a spill on 2 different training runs out there last year (dislocated my thumb on one, bloodied my knee up on another), so as long as you're paying attention the whole time, you'll be okay.

They'll be directing traffic for parking the day of the race, but I think the bulk of parking is in the lot that's off to the right of the lake.  So if you're coming into the main Halfmoon Beach lot from Hankerd, follow the road around to the right and down hill and you'll see a bigger lot that's hidden from the main road.

I think we're planning on heading out there on Sunday (around 11-ish?), if that works for you, Coop...should be nice weather!

Truth; didn't make it there yesterday. I needed a nap.

So I'm going to try again today. I'm sneaking off so that I can be in the water at around 10:30am.

Okay, so me and Eric and Coop did the bike course yesterday while everyone else in the world was doing Hawk Island.  Here are some (okay, many) thoughts about the course:

Hankerd is pretty terrible...okay, really terrible, but it only lasts for about 2 miles.  It was tough yesterday because the shadows from the trees were making it tough to see all the patching on the road, so be careful on the downhills with your speed.  This whole stretch is rolling hills...one moderately tough climb.

North Territorial is great...nice smooth pavement and flat.  Same with Hadley...some nice downhills here, so get in your big gear and cruise, because this is pretty much the last good pavement you'll see!

Careful at the 2 corners at Unidilla...this is where a guy had to get hospitalized after a bad spill last year on race day.  If the roads are wet, take the turn slowly.

Once you hit Doyle, the road is good for a couple minutes, then it gets really bad.  There are a couple spots from here until the end of the course where the road is really chewed up at the very bottom of a downhill, so be ready to get out of aero and stand up a little on the pedals.  There are a couple more good climbs here, one going around a bend.  It pretty much is the same condition all the way back into the park.

There was also quite a bit of loose gravel on the park road going into and out of transition, so take those corners carefully.

Eric (my Eric) and I did the run afterwards and here are some more thoughts:

The trail was sandier than I remember, especially in the first mile...I ended up with quite a bit in my shoes and got a pretty bad blister on one foot - don't forget to bodyglide your feet!

There are only 2 really big hills (in my opinion).  The one mega hill that's between miles 1 & 2, and then another series of climbs right after you hop back on the Silver Lake Trl from Silver Hill Rd.

The overgrowth wasn't too bad to me (but I'm only 5'5"), and there was only one downed tree in the beginning.  The trail was actually in good shape!  If it is wet on race day, you'll want to watch out for the black plastic stuff that they use (for erosion control?) on a lot of the hills on the second half.

There are less roots than I remembered, but quite a bit of loose rocks, and it seemed like they were always on the downhills, so watch your footing.

I remembered this from last year and confirmed it yesterday, but the 3 & 4 mile markers (spray painted on trees) are off.  They both come too early.  Last year, I remember thinking that the last mile took forever!  So don't worry if your second mile split seems fast and your fifth seems long.  Just know that right before you turn from the dirt rd. onto Hankerd is where the 4th mile marker should be.  Then there's a gradual slow climb on Hankerd before you turn back into the park and it's a fast downhill to the finish.

Whew...hope that helps anyone that's racing and hasn't been out that way yet this year!

i HATE riding on bad roads. when i train, i just coast on the bumpy sections because they make me feel so uncomfortable...i always feel like i'm going to flat, or bust a rim, or break something else on the bike, or just crash the bike somehow.

this is gonna suck...i might not go hard on the bike sections except he smooth parts... and might bring my comfier road bike with clincher tires...

Thanks for the pre-race report, CG!

I am excited for and dreading this one all at the same time!  I think they might want to re-classify this one as a "Sprint-Oly" distance.  Just throwing that out there... Smile

If I find races on the 14th, 21st and 28th, then I won't have to train at all in June... just race and recover!  Laughing
Just think about all that time I'll be saving... Woo!  Free time!

Any word on packet pick-up or info for the course?  The website doesn't have any info and I assume that we're getting an email this week prior to the race but I guess I don't know...

They normally send an email out the week prior.  Also, packet pickup us normally the day prior and morning of.  Not to worry, Elite Endeavors is fairly well organized, unlike other organizers.  I won't mention names, but I'll give initials....3 and D

Okay, so me and Eric and Coop did the bike course yesterday while everyone else in the world was doing Hawk Island.

Awesome course report!
Thanks so much!

I finally went and did the course yesterday at around 3pm. I even tried to do a bit of the swim, but it was quite creepy being out in the lake by myself, so I turned around after ~100 yards. Unless there is a huge heat wave, this will most likely be wetsuit legal.

I had the same impressions for the bike and run parts, however, I think I will bring my fancy race wheels and some light shoes, just in case it is dry.

I found the roads much better than I had expected from my earlier drive on the course. They are really torn up, but most of it is in early hankard, and then on the last few miles before coming back to Washtenaw Cnty. That might depend most on how the race course is done to leave room for the runners.

The run course itself wasn't too bad. At least not as bad as everyone was telling me it was going to be. I'd already run 5 miles earlier yesterday, and I ended up doing the whole 5 miles in less than 45 minutes after having done the whole bike ride in less than 45 minutes. No sprinting. Nothing magical. Just an easy pace, and it wasn't all that bad. At least when it was a bit packed in due to earlier rain that day, and in the afternoon sun. I did have to stop to get gigantic snapping turtle out of the road that was about to get hit on Hankard, so that might've given me a faster time due to rest. I do imagine that racing those hills will be tough, rather than taking it all easy. The second hill was harder than the first, even though it was much smaller.

I'm quite excited thought! I'm no runner, and this course doesn't seem like it will kill me. Perhaps it'll be different on race day, but it wasn't terrible yesterday.

I deferred my registration to next year.

I have to say, the people at EE (specifically Joyce) are incredibly fast in dealing with CS issues.  I've emailed them twice in the last two weeks and both times, I had a response within 5 minutes!  That is incredible.  I would be surprised to see a response within 5 days from other directors!

I would imagine the water will be warmer than SMP was at the Random Training Encounter Practice Training Triathlon Training training session.  I've not been IN Half-Moon, but it seemed pretty calm when I looked at it.  I'm not too sure on the depth either, but I'm planning on swimming on the top part

I'm wondering if I'm going to need to carry that hand-drawn map with me for the run, though... anyone?
Are there going to be rodeo-clowns pointing which path to take at the intersections?

Half Moon is virtually waveless.  You will be able to walk out about 100 yards before having to swim.  As for temp, yorkee, just make sure to wear your swimsuit.  The water should be in the low to mid 60s to start.

E-Caps, don't worry about getting lost on the run.  It will be marked and you can just follow others ahead of you.  Unless you're super fast.  Then just follow the markings.

Email from EE:

WATER TEMP: will be measured Saturday, now it is in the mid 60s.  Bring your wetsuits.   USAT rules allow wetsuits below 78 degrees.
