Well guys, yours truly has my first article posted on BT this week. It should be under the New Articles list. It's about my torrid love affair with running---NOT!

I'm officially broke now. I signed up for most of my 07 races this week. I signed up for 3 sprints, 2 olympics, and 1 duathlon. I'm still considering 1-2 add'l sprints, plus possibly my first half-mary in April and a HIM in October. If I do the half-mary and survive, I'll probably feel better about the HIM.

I hope everyone is getting back into the swing of things after the holiday.

Neat article, Eric!!  I'm totally with you on becoming the annoying person in the office trying to get people to sign up for things.  I'm constantly talking about the tri I just signed up for and telling people they should do it too.  Of course, it's even more interesting when they come back to me with the excuses they've come up with (one lady won't because she's trying to get pregnant...I don't think prepping for a sprint tri is going to cause problems in that area, but whatever...I'm not the one trying to get knocked up.)

On another note, I start my swim lessons tomorrow (Jan 9th).  I'm nervous and excited...and a little worried because my nose is still a little stuffy and that it may work against me.  But, I have my suit, googles and swim cap, so we'll see how it goes.  I'm going to miss the 2nd week because I'll be on a cruise ship (darn!), but I'm going to ask what I should practice.  I have every intention of doing some training while on that cruise...they have a running track and all that, after all, so why not?

Tell your coworker that training for a sprint might help get her pregnant---All that time in the gym can only help any of us look better. Ok, that was a slightly shallow and very male comment!

Enjoy your cruise. The wife and I took a Carnival cruise to Grand Cayman/Cozumel for our honeymoon. We actually went to 2 or 3 spin classes and even went running one day on deck. Of course, this was a five day cruise so don't be too impressed. Wait--we did go snorkeling too so I guess we even got in a swim. We're soooo dedicated!! Ok, not really, but it did make me feel better about the alcohol and food we consumed on the trip-right up until I got food poisoning on the last day of our trip. Just getting myself and our luggage off the ship and to the airport was about all I could physically handle that day.

Soooo...on that happy note, have a great time!

Gee, thanks a ton...Tongue out

I'm going on Carnival as well...to Turks & Caicos Islands.  It's my first "real" vacation, so I'm stoked, but actually kinda scared.  Oh, well, I'll get over it!!

Had my first swim lesson last night (we're talking beginning swimming here...).  Found out that my major problem was a relatively easy fix...all I needed was goggles and the fear of hyperventilating went away (for the most part).  I was just freaking out because I couldn't see.  Amazing what a $6 pair of goggles will do... YAY!!

Good for you! I'm glad the googles helped! I've been thinking about signing up for swimming lessons, but I can't make the ones at the gym fit into my kids' schedules. You'll have to fill me in on any really helpful tips!

Don't you wish all of life's problems could be fixed that easy?? Glad you're feeling more comfortable. I have a friend who's going thru a lot of the same issues with swimming. He's finding that he's better at it and stronger at it than he thought, he just needed some self-confidence and some helpful pointers.

Great job taking on something that intimidated you and getting beyond it!

Good job with the swimming, I have been using the ymca now for 2 weeks, three days ago the life gaurd started talking to me and ends up he is one of the swim masters coaches and gave me some great Ideas. since most of the swim we do a open water, and showed me how to spot, and that I was not kicking right and how to use more upperlegs, not as much knees like i was doing. I hope these are some good hints to you guys, I found in the last two swims its worked really well, the spotting is kind of different. Well, back to the gym. kw

I have a question about the site. On the training log page, there's a calendar and the days end up color coded with different colors. I've looked for a key to what the colors mean, and I can't find one? Does anyone know what the different colors are?

Green is race
Blue is rest day (logged info but no training)
Peach seems to be when you mark sick/injured

Other than that, I'm not sure.

Hey guys!
Don't be alarmed when you don't see any workouts logged for a couple days on my training log. I've been studying and working hard, so my time has been limited. But only 1 1/2 weeks till my test, then I can get back to training hard!

Ahoy!  I'm back from my cruise (though not home yet...still in FL).  I have some SERIOUS penance to pay (I'm sure) for all the buffet and 24 hour pizza I've eaten this past week, but what fun!  BNL (that's Barenaked Ladies) along w/ some other bands put on a ROCKIN' "Ships & Dips" trip...not much RnR when you're up until 2am+ jamming.

So, back to the grind, and back to training this next week...looking forward to starting some serious training in the up-coming weeks.  If I go on the cruise next year, I'll be a whole heck of a lot hotter!

I wonder if I could get BNL to sponser me?  Wink

It's almost the end of January---curious how everybody did in meeting their goals for this month.

I had hope to run at least 3 times per week for at least 12 miles. I've been prettty consistent with my 3x and even tried one 4 this month. If I meet my planned workouts for Mon-Wed, I'll have completed the equivalent of two Ironman events this month. With three days left in the month, I've set personal highs for Bike and Run and should surpass swim tomorrow.

Bike: 17h 23m - 304.72 Mi
Run: 8h 56m - 45.14 Mi
Swim: 5h 40m 22s - 15750 Yd

My first event is in less than 6 weeks, so I'm feeling both psyched and nervous. I want to continue dialing up the quantity and quality of my workouts this month. I've got a sprint on 3/10, a duathlon on 3/24, and hope to do my first half-mary on 4/14.

How's everybody else feeling?

I have been extremely busy. I have had to place tris on hold for now. I am currently training for the fire department physical agility test which is extremely taxing. The entire test is only 10 minutes and 20 seconds but it is done with a 50 pound weight vest on and begins with 3 min and 20 sec on a stairmill with a total of 75 pounds on. When you get off your legs are like jello and then you have to finish 7 more events in 7 minutes. So my focus lately has been on that as well as working, teaching and volunteering. But I do manage to get my workout in daily. I will begin logging those workouts here although they will be different than when I begin training for a tri once I finish the academy later this year.

Hey guys,

Doing great got 9 weeks till my first tri, HIM in Oceanside , CA, looking forward to going home to see my dad and go play at disneyland and the beach for spring break. Training is going great following the HIM Plan here on BT. This week will be really nice since its a recovery. I feel still weak in the pool and not liking being on the trainer so much, but I'm getting lots of hours and real exicted about this tri.

Well glad to hear from jcmedic, hope your test goes well and your academy goes smooth. you should have alot of fun with it. if you have any question and/or need help email me,

well I hope everyone else is doing well and hope there right on schedule for training.

Keep safe and have fun.

By the way, I'm jealous of anyone that can say that they can do a tri in 9 weeks. It's 5 degrees in Buffalo currently with a foot of snow on the ground and it should be like that until May. But, there are still a lot of winter runs and the Shamrock run is just around the corner.

Yeah Missy! I so glad for you that your exams are over! I'm with you as far as being jealous of warm weather!

Wendy, it's good to hear from you. It sounds like that physical agility test is quite the work out! Good luck!

Man, gotta hate that cold weather and training. We've had more 60 degree days than 30 degree days here in NC. I think we hit 70 less than a week ago. Maybe that's why half of Charlotte moved down from NY/NJ.
