Just a curious question has Lake Michigan ever been 78 degrees (not including the areas near a nuclear plant water discharge)? I'm used to swimming in Lake Michigan from beaches in the UP, and I don't believe it's ever been that warm up there, wasn't certain if it would warm up that much more even being in the southern area of the lake. I am not a meteorologist or anything but my recalection is the lake getting near or possiblity above 80 in the Holland and Grand Haven areas growing up. It all depends on the wind direction. I know it can turn over in about 4 hours or so and change 10 degrees pretty quickly.
The lake does indeed get up into the mid/upper 70's a couple times per summer when the conditions are right (warm temps and a gentle west wind bringing us all of Wisconsin's warm surface water ). As Shermbelle points out, it can also "flip" in as little as 4 hours. Good example: the day before last year's 1.75 mile open water swim between Muskegon and Grand Haven, water temps were in the upper 60's/low 70's. We had an easterly wind overnight that pushed the warm surface water out a couple of miles and temps at the beaches were in the mid to upper 50's by morning (which resulted in a cancelled event )....... |
