Has anyone heard how many have signed up so far?

I most likely will end up doing this one, I just haven't planned anything concrete after IMCDA yet.

I just checked the website, registration is still open, i couldn't find how many are signed up though. I guess I should probably get around to doing that.

rottieguy - 2008-02-06 3:44 PM Line up a wetsuit it would be nice to have. Just a curious question has Lake Michigan ever been 78 degrees (not including the areas near a nuclear plant water discharge)? I'm used to swimming in Lake Michigan from beaches in the UP, and I don't believe it's ever been that warm up there, wasn't certain if it would warm up that much more even being in the southern area of the lake.

I am not a  meteorologist or anything but my recalection is the lake getting near or possiblity above 80 in the Holland and Grand Haven areas growing up. It all depends on the wind direction. I know it can turn over in about 4 hours or so and change 10 degrees pretty quickly.

The lake does indeed get up into the mid/upper 70's a couple times per summer when the conditions are right (warm temps and a gentle west wind bringing us all of Wisconsin's warm surface water). As Shermbelle points out, it can also "flip" in as little as 4 hours. Good example: the day before last year's 1.75 mile open water swim between Muskegon and Grand Haven, water temps were in the upper 60's/low 70's. We had an easterly wind overnight that pushed the warm surface water out a couple of miles and temps at the beaches were in the mid to upper 50's by morning (which resulted in a cancelled event).......

As of about 2 weeks ago, there were 700 signed up out of the 2000+ cap. Lots of room. Not sure why the lag in registrations.

1147 are now registered. Most hotels in the area are sold out. I had to get a suite at the Boulevard Inn which is closer to the race venue but way more expensive than the host hotel (Holiday Inn Express).

Does Steelhead let you defer a year if you need to? - Oops - never mind - looks like you can defer for medical reasons.

... and me as well- my first HIM and yup- already nervous!! Choose this race as it was recommended as good for my first HIM.  As well- we are in an extremely flat area here in south-western Ontario- so was looking for a race not too hilly.

- booked a suite at the Boulevard Inn ( had signed up early for the race- and the host hotel was already filled).

On the entry confirmation page of the event site. 1147 registered as of 2/24 @ 12:55PM. However, it may take a few days for the confirmations to make the page so the actual numbers may be a bit higher.

Steelhead is a great race and very well run, a very fast course with no hills to speak of.

I will be racing it again this year as my "a" race.

See you then,

Geoff

We will all have to keep in touch as the countdown to the race ticks down.
I will be doing some shorter distance Tri's locally...hopefully to get that transition stuff down to a science before the Big One on August 2nd!

Does registering on-line at active.com take care of all the waivers and reciepts and all that stuff you need for check in? I was looking at the Steelhead website and it said you needed to bring reciept for a 1 time USAT membership and that you needed to sign you waiver. Just wondering if bringing my active.com reciept would be good enough? Thanks.

Steelhead is the big show: The largest race in the state and the only one that is part of a major international series. Steelhead is the largest 70.3 race in the world also.

See you there!

What does everybody have on the schedule for tune up races? I'm doing a marathon May 4th, and would like to do a couple of shorter tris in June/July. All the sprints that are close to me are 7-10 days before Steelhead and I 'd like to be resting then. Might have to do one at a leisure pace. Keep training everyone, only 4 months out.
