Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Is there stilll room in this group for another one? I'm Syndi. I'm 49 years old, no kids, but I have 2 large dogs and 2 cats. This will be my 4th tri season, although I've only done 2-3 races/ year. I've never been hugely athletic, although I've always done something like hiking or casual biking. A few years back I started to have some problems with my endurance and breathing. After quite the extensive work up I ended up with a pacemaker for a heart rhythm problem. The year after I got the pacemaker a bunch of women from work decided to do a local sprint tri. My cardiologist said OK, so I did it with them. Now I'm hooked. (My cardiologist just looks at me and shakes his head. I guess I'm not like his other pacer patients.) I've done a few sprints and a few olys. My goal for this season is a HIM in September with a few olys during the summer. The trick is going to be staying healthy. I got plantar fasciitis over the winter and am now just working up to running again. I'm not fast, but I'm stubborn and that gets me through a lot. I'm looking forward to hearing ideas from everyone else and for giving and getting support when the training gets tough and enthusiasm lags. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() wanna race - 2008-04-24 1:08 PM Hey Donato, My name is Mace and I would like to join your group. I am trying to get back into training, and a little motivation would be nice. This is my 3rd year doing tris, with some on and off training. I plan on doing a half ironman in september with a few sprints thrown in. 09 is the year of the FULL, but first i have to become more regular with my training. Here's a run down about myself. I work as a firefighter and on duty for 24 hours at a time. I'm 32y/o and have been married for 4 years and have a wonder 2 y/o girl. thanks, mace Hi Mace. Welcome to the group! Sounds like you've got a great year ahead of you and plenty of time to train for your half. Yes, regular/consistent training is the key to the long races. Being on 24 and I assume 24 at whack must be interesting juggling your family life, training, etc. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() really not that bad doing 24 at a time. My shifts work like this 24 on 24off for a six day stretch and then off for 4 days. It's a pretty nice schedule to work.(only 10 days a month). Thanks for invite to the group. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Syndi. Yes, we're still open for business so welcome to the group! A lot of pet owners here! I'm glad your cardiologist gave you the green light to do tris. I went to a cardiologist and also had a CT scan of my heart before doing my IM last year since my family has a history of heart disease. Looks like you have some great plans this year. Yes, it's a good balance between pushing our limits and injuring ourselves (I'm nursing some myself too) so hopefully you (and all of us) can keep on track with that. Hey, being stubborn will get you far in endurance activities since others will have already quit! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Anne, no need to be embarassed at all. Sounds like you have a strong running base which will serve you well in tris. Congrats on your tri last weekend. I'll have to check out your RR. I'm sure many have tips on the OWS here. We'll all help to keep you honest with your training I also have asthma. Do you take anything for it at all? re: metabolism, yah, every year it gets harder. We're all fighting that one, but training for tris sure keeps you busy and burning calories. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey, our group is almost full! First question for everyone out there - what are your goals for the month of May? Share them with us all so that we can help support you and nudge you on them. Ideally, your goals will be S.M.A.R.T. - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. They should be specific to your needs and priorities and likely support bigger goals you may have later in the year. Okay, let's hear 'em!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think that since I'm starting my training anew this month I'll keep May's goals fairly simple: Follow my training plan to the letter, which includes training every day with Friday's off. |
![]() ![]() |
Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Goals for May: 1) Do all of my assigned trainings, if I need to skip something make plans to switch or make it up. 2) Do at least 1 OWS- want to get in at least 2 before CdA 3) Weight under 190 by end of May. About 4-6 lbs. Want to run Cda at 185lbs or less. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey, Santa Maria! That's where I'm from originally. I moved away in 1987 and then went up to Cal Poly and moved from SLO in 1993. Unfortunately, I haven't been back since but would like to. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Goals.... hmmm... 1. Drop 5 pounds. I've let my weight creep up in the last year. Gotta fix that. Guess that's enough for now.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Donato - Thanks for the welcome and reassurance. I have an albuterol inhaler for asthma and use it before each workout. Humid, hot weather and dust are the worst triggers. I'm also finding that the chlorine in the swimming pool can aggravate it somewhat. Goals - Simple is good. May goals Running: Maintain 25-30 mpw with one speed workout each week Swim: 2 or 3 workouts per week, work up to 300 yard swim (right now I am at 150 yards) Bike: 2 or 3 rides a week. This can include mountain biking as well as road Editing this post to add: Drop 5 lbs by May 31 ![]() Edited by abake 2008-04-24 9:11 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi group May's plan Workouts per week 2 run x 30 min each 2 swim x 45 - 1 hr each (at least 1600 yds each) 2 Bike - 2 x 1 hr 2 strength - 1 upper, 1 lower 15 - 30 min each I'd like to be avg faster in everything by EOM, so right now I'm at: 500 swim - 8:33 4.5 mph average on run (on a treadmill right now while I get my legs) 14 MPH End of May hoping for: 500 swim - 8:15 4.7+ mph with at least 5 mins of run at 5.0 mph 15 MPH avg I hope I can stick with that. Please drop by my logs any time - love inspires and feedback! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() enginerd - 2008-04-24 5:04 PM Robin, you're in! You're our 10th. Welcome to the group! woohooo!!!! thanks A little about me - I'm 26, married, dog, no kids, also an engineer. This is my first season, I started training late last year and have 2 sprint tris under my belt, as well as a 5k and half marathon. This weekend I am doing my Y's sprint, and next weekend it's Wildflower, my first oly. On June 8 (my 27th b-day) I am doing the mud run at Camp Pendleton. My first goal for May is to complete Wildflower. I don't have a specific time goal - I just want to have fun and finish strong. Second, I want to let my knee heal. It has been bugging me on and off since my half marathon. It felt good in my last race, but I have been doing a minimal amount of running to prepare for Wildflower. After this race I will stop running for a few weeks. I do have the 10k on June 8, but that's more of a "fun" race (as if they all aren't fun) and I'll be running it at my sister's pace, which is slower than mine. 3rd, I'd like to get my swimming times down below 2:00/100yd. To do that I'll probably have to swim more than once a week, and maybe get some coaching. Gotta go for now, sounds like we have a good group and I'm glad to be part of it!!! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Donato, I made SF a "B race" just for the reason you mention - HILLS. My BQ hopeful race is Humboldt, which I hear is also quite flat and fast. We'll see how things progress in the next 3 months, but I feel pretty good about my running at the moment. As for my May goals: 1) Have fun at my first tri in Napa. 2) Break 1:40 at Napa (things will have to go well - weather, OWS, good bike leg, good pacing, etc.). - This is just an estimate based on my current training. 3) 1 OWS/week 4) 100 miles running, 300 miles cycling, 18000 yds swimming 5) Bay to Breakers in < 56:00 6) Enjoy 4 days of backcountry skiing with Rachel over Memorial weekend (leave the tri training at home!). Best of luck to you all... train well!! |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() May goals: Stay with the training plan. I've reworked the BT HIM plan so that it's 4 days on/ 1 day off. That seems to work the best for me. Try to find someplace to do an OWS. I live in Truckee (by Lake Tahoe). We still have a BUNCH of snow up here, so the local lakes are out for at least another month. Lose that last 5 pounds that I've been yo-yoing for a few years. Good luck to all who are racing! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My primary goal for May is to survive and finish IM Lanzarote. Intermediate goals are to not get injured leading up to it and to do a reasonable taper. That and be very active with our mentoring group |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() BTW, here are links to the mentoring group and all of our training logs. Enginerd's Mentoring Group You can add this into your "Goals" section of your training blog so you have easy access to everyone's logs. If anyone wants to fix it up and put it into a nice table or something, feel free! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey I'm late to the party. Wow Enginerd's group filled up fast. I'm Bryan. I've known Donato for 17 years now so I remember when he was a plump fellow. Damn look at him now! Of course he remembers when I was a plump fellow as well... LAST YEAR. He got me doing trail races and moderate biking early last year, then somehow got me to do my first sprint tri over the summer. I did IM Cal HIM with him in Oceanside last month and now I'm greedy, I want to do a sub-6 HIM. I ran cross country and marathons in highschool. More because I didn't have a future in baseball and was too slow for the sprints. I've always hated lap swimming and biking, but that's 2 areas of the tri. My swimming's getting better and still building my base on the bike. Biking is alot more fun when you're in shape. I'm motivated by seeing improvement on things that I suck in (e.g., swimming/biking) and by fear of not finishing. Enginerd kept encouraging longer and longer races last year, and that pushed me to stay focused and train harder. I just need more consistency. I wanna be #11! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The good news: Today I took the time to learn how to use my chain tool. The bad news: This happened on the side of the road, about 3 miles from home. So much for my ride today. At least I was able to fix it well enough to hold up to a few miles of very careful pedaling in a low gear. By the time I got home just now it was already separating again and I could feel it sticking. Oh well!! Off to buy a new chain (and some new handlebar tape, because mine is now covered in grease). |
