Member 35 Mansfield, TX | Subject: RE: IMKY bib numbers are up! Did a 104 miles this morning. The ride was organized at a local bike shop and was supposed to be 105 miles. But I stopped a mile short at my inlaw's house and jumped in their pool. It was 98 degrees outside today. The wife and kids came out and did course support and it was the only way I was able to get through it with them keeping me supplied with cold fluids. |

There is no real significance....it's mostly in our heads. They usually don't post bib numbers until just before the race so it is an indication that the race will be really soon. Generally by the time bib numbers are up you are in taper and training is all but over. It's also fun to find your number as it seems to give a little more realism to the fact that you are actually gonnd do an ironman. ~Mike |

I don't have the Xterra, but I do have a Point Zero, and I really don't see it adding much heat. They are pretty thin, nothing like my wet suit. Lots of them were being worn last year, so I don't think you will have an issue with it. FishHog |

I know this has been discussed before some, but what do you guys and gals feel is the biggest advantage of the speedsuit? Does it really provide that much additional bouyancy and speed vs. swimming just in a swimsuit. I'm a MOP swimmer and am trying to justify if the cost is worth it. Thoughts? Thanks, Matt |

Thanks, Matt I'm not looking at it for the buoyancy element so much as the ability to make it easier to move through the water. I look at the IM as a lesson in maximizing efficiency. With the $100 off, I'm planning to pick one up for the race. Might as well give myself every possible opportunity to hit a PR. As with any of the other tri-specific speed toys (bikes, helmets, wheels, etc), the cost-justification is a personal choice. |

Thanks, Matt Ok, so I'm a little confused now. I thought wetsuit illegal races were because of the temperature of the water being too hot....not because it added any buoyancy. what does a wetsuit illegal race have to do with a "suit" providing any buoyancy? is it because there is some correlation I'm not aware of between buoyancy and heat retention that USAT, WTC or IMNA utilize in their infinite wisdom in determing what temperature buoyancy should be "illegal"? or am I just tired and overtrained that I'm missing something fairly obvious here.

Good question. This was just always my understanding. I just checked out the USAT site and pulled down the .pdf of the rules and it really doesn't say. It just say b/w temp x and y this group can do this and while pros cannot... and so on. It just may have been me connecting dots that may or may not be there. If wetsuits are not legal and you wear one.... wouldn't that be considered a "flotation" type device.? I know that I have not put on a wetsuit, drysuit, any suit that provides warmth in the water that did not float. I'm with you Steve... too tired to put much more thought to it..I just know they are legal. Kenny |

Veteran 248 Mooretown, Ontario Canada | Subject: RE: IMKY bib numbers are up! Your thinking too much. Races are either wetsuit legal or not. If not, you can wear anything as long as its neutrally bouyant. Wetsuits are obvioulsy bouyant, but your allowed to wear them in cold water so everyone doesn't die of hypothermia. At the same time everyone is getting the same advantage of the bouyancy, so its fair. FishHog |
