I am guessing since we will just be coming off a 5k we will not want to do a bunch of actual South Mountain climbing. (Or is that just me)?  Perhaps we can go south and hook into some of that loop we did two weeks ago in Ahwatukee.  Nice pavement and bike lanes. Some climbing but not too brutal.  All I know is the one time last year we did a ride through an indian rez on the south side of South Mountain, up north of it and back east......it was total hell and I said I would never ride that again. On the eastern stretch there were no bike lines and traffic was horrible.  I was not a happy camper.

Am I saying this all outloud?

So I am guessing that the 5k race will start near the main entrance off of Central. If we park at the main parking lot and meet at my van. We could ride from there and go West to San Juan Rd. to until it ends, which is 6 miles with hills. So round trip it would be a 12 mile ride which would be more than enough after a 5k race. If people wanted to ride more, they could just do another lap out to the end of San Juan and back.  The roads are closed to cars on Sunday, so it is nice. Here is a map.

6 mile route to end of San Juan Rd.

I think the roads are only closed to cars on Silent Sundays...  Next one is Aug 24

Silent Sunday will return each month in 2008!! On Silent Sundays, bicyclists, tots in strollers, in-line skaters and wheelchair users get to call the Park's roadways their own. Starting at 5 a.m. the park's roadways past the Central Avenue gate* will be reserved for non-motorized use. Remaing 2008 Dates: July 27, Aug. 24, Sept. 28, Oct. 26, Nov. 23 and Dec. 28

Dang, I am always wrong. LOL It is probably safer without all the foot traffic anyways, considering the speeds you can get on the bike on some of the downhills.

I will be able to make the 5k.  I'll be biking back to Tempe after the run if anyone wants to come with.

That sounds like a nice invite. It isn't that far either. Are you going on the ride with the group as well?

Ok....so last night at OWS Lisa and I over-road Ryan's bike route and determined that it would be better to do a different ride rather than the San Juan road ride up South Mountain.   So after the 5k we should all gather up and use the bathroom facilities at South Mountain and change into bike clothes there.....and then drive down to 40th St and Pecos Park and Ride location and do a bike loop down there.  Here is the bike loop.

Drive to the ride:

So does this sound good??

I might regret this on Sunday but how long is that loop (can't see the final marker)? IF we feel good on Sunday can we add another 10 miles or so?

THANKS!! It looks great!!!

What time do you guys think you'll end up at the Park & Ride? I might actually show up if it's not obnoxiously early and I'm not really hungover.

If you guys want to add any mileage to the loop I know the area pretty well as I do my morning rides down there.

I have been wanting to do the pecos ride but when I was looking at it the fires were bad and I couldn't. So this sounds cool. I am in. But Everyone is planning to be done with the run in like 30 minutes and I am fat and slow so I know it will take loger for me. I don't know if I will have enough time to finish the run and ride with you all. What time are you starting the ride?

Yeah, I will eat and make sure I have more fluids.  But still, I plan on giving it all I got at the 5k.

Anyways, I will quit complaining and just do whatever.

They normally do start those races on time, I think. They just blow a whistle whether or not everyone is lined up properly.

I will be down there by 7:45 or so if I decide to ride. If you don't see me don't wait up!
