Just an update on me...I went out to buy a chocolate bar and Mmm it was good and definitely hit the spot.

More importantly, I had a RMR done early last week at my Y ($40) and am now using BalanceLog software to track my calories and I am down almost 2 lbs even with PMS so I am very pleased.  I have concrete numbers based on my body, not formulas and estimates, as to how many calories per day I need to just survive.  After the RMR,  we sat down and answered questions about lifestyle activity and exercises which gave me a daily caloric requirement.    I did find software that works with the RMR and it allows for lifestyle, number of exercise calories to budget for a week and then it figures out how many calories per day to consume to lose weight. I am allowed 1680 calories per day before exercise to lose 1 lb per week.    I like it too because it syncs to my PDA so I can always have access to it,even when I am away from home or a computer.  One thing I do have to work on is eating more of my exercise calories so that I don't have a huge deficit because that will slow my metabolism.  I realize looking back at my nutrition logs here on BT that I don't think I was eating enough and when I was, it was not always the good choices.

I really like the program and costco.com has it for under $40 which also includes a body fat scale which just arrived today.  I am going to start using it tomorrow.  I did check it out this afternoon and I don't know whether it is measuring light or if my old scale was measuring heavy because there is close to 2 lbs difference between the 2 scales.  I tend to like the idea that my old one was measuring heavy.  Hey, I might drop 2 lbs tomorrow.

For some reason I received a second copy of the software with my scale so if anyone is interested, it is fully licensed version, still sealed and am planning to sell it for $20 plus postage.  Check out the website at http://www.microlifeusa.com/products_weightmanage.asp

One thing I forgot to add before,  during my consult at the Y,  we talked about intensity fo exercise.  Yes, tri training is mostly cardio training which is aerobic exercise (zone 4), it helps burn calories but does not help burn fat that you already have.   We have to exercise at a fat-burning level (zone 2 & 3) in order to burn fat.  Building muscle through weight lifting helps burn the fat also.  I have one more tri to do this fall and have really worked on keeping my HR in the Zone 2 & 3 during training the past couple of weeks.  Once my tri is over, I plan to start the weight training again.

If ya'll don't mind me suggesting that you might try simplefit.org.  It is a great bodyweight program.  I am just a guy so I don't understand stuff from above, but if I can help in some way I would be glad to help.

I loved doing the simplefit program but I have arthritis in my shoulder which irritates the rotator cuff and doing all the pull ups and push ups caused major flare ups.  It is a great workout for those who can do the exercises.  Is there a variation that I could do without all the strain/stress on my shoulder?

Nutrition: consult an RD and not someone labeled a “nutritionist”. Anyone can claim to be a nutritionist. Get the advice of an RD that preferably has a background working with clients in sports. (Some RDs only work in hospitals establishing menus for the geriatrics that are admitted.)

Yes, this stuff costs money. But it is not only your hobby, it is your lifestyle.

I would just like to qualify Talarspeed's comments here ... yes, it's true there is no standard requirements with schooling and experience to call yourself a "nutritionist". However Talarspeed says to avoid anyone labelling themselves as a "nutritionist" and instead consult a dietician. As a Nutritionist - specifically a Registered Holistic Nutritionist - I can assure you that I have ample schooling, have passed several Designation exams, and maintain my status by exceeding my upgrading requirements every year. I also have Certification in supplemental areas that broaden my range of knowledge.
However Talarspeed is RIGHT to suggest finding someone with a background in sports nutrition. Don't rule out "Nutritionists" just because it's a common phrase. But whomever you hire must be someone you are comfortable working with, someone who understands your needs and goals, and has the education to properly inform you (and don't be afraid to ask to see copies of their Certifications!).

Now that I'm done defending my profession:

Good luck ladies. I was in your shoes about 5 years ago, I hired a personal trainer and a nutritionist and after a lot of hard work I lost 40 pounds. Then I discovered triathlon, and lost another 10. It's tough keeping it off, and I - the "health and fitness professional" - also experience weight fluctuations and highs and lows ... we are all only human, after all.
I try not to be too hard on myself, and you shouldn't either.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I might be interested in purchasing this program from you. Do you think it will sync to my blackberry? Are most of your foods that you eat in the database? I would hate to have to start all over and add stuff in.

Ironically, I'm looking to join my local Y. There are 3 within 9 miles of me and one of them has a masters swim. i had no idea that they do the RMR there! This makes me excited.

I don't know if it will sync with the blackberry. I am thinking you could contact microlife who created it - www.microlifeusa.com or 800-568-4147.   The back of the CD case says it can be used with Windows PC, Palm OS PDA's and the internet. Supports color PDA's and Sony Jog Dial.

On the microlife website there is a place to plug in your zip code to find out where you can have the RMR test done based on your zip code  http://www.microlifeusa.com/products_weightmanage.asp

Let me know what you find out.  I will hold onto the software until you find out if it will work.

ETA; It does have a pretty decent database but I have added some things that are not listed - mostly regionally available products. The nice thing is that most of those things I had entered into BT nutrition so I can easily look it up on the BT site and just reenter it into my PDA or PC for balancelog.   I also found a yahoo group for balancelog users. I just joined it and they might have other databases to supplement it with.  I will let you know.

Balance Log does not work with a blackberry.  I have heard some good things about diet pro and had not heard about it before I bought the BalanceLog.  Guess you are not interested if you cannot use it on Blackberry?  If not, I am going to list it on Ebay I think.

I just joined WW online so I can track everything...although I think this is a pretty good site. I'll set up a "challenge" although I don't want to call it that. I'm going to call it a "support group".

I think we are going to be surprised by how many people actually join in on our support group.  The more the merrier!

just checking back in.  went to the first doctor and she was MOST unhelpful.  i have another doc's appt (first was gyn, this next one is the regular physical w/ primary care doc) in a few weeks and hopefully this will be more help.  for now still just trying to eat right.  i have dropped a few lbs since my initial post, but more impressively to me, my body fat dropped a LOT.  picking up a good weight lifting routine has really helped.  i'm happy with any improvements i can hold on to and be proud of right now, so i'm holding on to that.   weight was down slightly, but it's kind of wobbling around right now.  but b/c of the body fat loss, i am seeing my clothes a little loser, which is a great feeling. i'm going to talk to my doc about a referral to the hospital's nutrition program when i go.  but other than that, still trucking along.
