I'm trying to figure out what to wear on the bike on Sunday if it's cold and rainy. I don't have a lot of technical bike gear for rain/cold, so if you pass someone in a soaked UND sweatshirt it's probably me.:-)

I've read a lot of race reports where people freeze for 3 hours on the bike ride. I'm going to try not to be one of them.

Here's what's recommended for 'cool weather' cycling:

Remember, that's cycling as a stand-alone event.  I got really curious after your comment, so I did a quick search on BT for races where the event was colder than 52 degrees.  Enjoy the reading:

I think I'm gonna just throw on a long sleeve tech shirt and some REALLY light gloves at the bike start.  DO NOT put on a sweatshirt/sweatpants.  It shouldn't break the bank for you to pick up a tech shirt at Target (C9) or WAL*MART.  They actually make some pretty good tech gear.  Should put you out about $14.99 at the most.  Go to Fleet Farm or Target/WAL*MART and pick up some cotton or better yet, poly gloves.  Should cost $3.99 at the most, that way you don't feel bad throwing them out.

Unfortunately, all the guys with experience are off at IMOO today or I'm sure we'd get some pretty good advice.

Good luck!

Thanks Sal.

I can dig up something a little more rain resistant and aerodynamic than a sweatshirt. What's another 15 bucks, I'll spend more than that on Gu. I hadn't thought about the gloves, that's a good idea.

Good luck to everyone racing.

I'm a little ashamed to admit it, but I'm just ready for tomorrow to be over with. I'm burnt out on this season (despite some pretty good races) and just want to be done for a while.

That being said, heh heh, good luck this weekend, everyone.

Well, I got up this morning and pooped out. Between 49 degree air and cool lake temps, I didn't feel particularly motivated. So I'm sitting here with a cup of coffee in my robe having a lazy morning instead of racing. I'm pretty burnt out for now and simply wasn't excited for this race unlike all my other races for the summer. It's time for me to pack up the tri gear for a few months. Hope the race went well for everyone. I'm looking forward to reading race reports.

That was my first tri today and it really couldn't have gone any better for me. I hit my goal for time and I felt pretty good. I was pretty anxious going into this, but now that I popped my cherry, I can't wait until next year.

I know how you felt.  I wasn't particularly excited about this race either, but it's the only one my wife was doing this year.  Weather was beautiful, and the water wasn't too bad...probably about 68 degrees.

Had a PR this year, but like you Aaron, I'm ready for the tri season to be over!  Enjoy the off-season!

Congrats Ben!  We're looking forward to hearing about your race...

What's your plan for next year?

I love having a September race on my schedule. I loved the race. The air temps were actually perfect for me. I far prefer this over warm mornings.

Water was good.

Hills got to me, but I perserved. Having trouble posting my race report, but it should be up soon.

I was also a little concerned about not having a wetsuit to swim in. Were most people wearing them, or was it warm enough to go without?

Congratulations, uberben, on your first race. Feels good, doesn't it?

I'd say 90% + had them.

I actually prefer this temp water. This is right about where the temps were for Lake Minnetonka in the 3rd week of June. The coldest part, frankly, was setting up before hand, when the air temp was really down there.

But hey, I can fully understand with just not having the mojo to do it. That happened to me for Graniteman this year. Was signed up, had it on my calendar, fully planning to do it. Then the night before, I was having dinner with my wife and said "I don't know why, but I have no desire to do this race." I slept in that morning

Thanks for that. While I didn't beat myself up over the decision, it's not one I felt great about... though coffee and donuts were approaching great later in the morning. I'm just glad that others have felt this way as well.

I was spectating from about 10 to 1130 this morning, I feel sorry for everyone getting dumped on with rain.

How bad was the rain? In the Western Burbs, it was just a drizzle. Was hoping that was all they got at Square Lake. Did it come during the bike for most people?

I got sprinkled/rained on probably the last 45 minutes of the bike. It wasn't too bad. It started coming down pretty hard during the run. That wouldn't have been any fun for people still on the bike. It wasn't too bad except for the squishy shoes. I should have covered up my transition area, but it was nice and sunny at the start. Live and learn.

Congrats to everybody who raced this weekend!

When I left they were getting legit DUMPED on with rain.

Soaked from it at the transition area and south along the entire run route.

My race report for the HIM distance is posted.  A few sprinkles on the bike but real rain for me was on the run but was a non-issue, I don't mind running in the rain as longas temps are Ok.  I did have a short wait for a train on the run around mile 9.  Maybe 20 seconds totally stopped and 100-150 yds running slow up to the tracks.
