David,

If there is still room I would like to join this mentor group.

Quick history:  I am 27, married, no kids, and a Sergeant in the Marine Corps stationed at Buckley AFB in Aurora CO.

I have completed one sprint tri thus far, which was a last minute decision to see if I could even do one.  My wife runnerg1rl7 (Laura) has been triing since 2007 so she is the biggest influence there.  Though I was under trained for the sprint in Sept I managed to finish stronger than I imagined, so now I am hooked.

Weakness:  This one is definatly swimming.  I am trying to focus more on this for the winter, but often don't commit the time needed.

Strength:  Though this is only comparable to the weakness is running.  I have completed numorous half marathons and shorter distances, and 2 marathons.  I am still working on speed, but I do have the endurance to finish the distance.

Goal:  To complete the 5430 Tri Series in Boulder, CO.  This consists of a sprint in Jun, a Oly in July, and a Half Iron (Long Course) in Aug.  There are other races I would like to compete in, but those are dependent on which Marathons I chose to run this year as well.

travis, let me know a bit closer to race date but my girlfriend is moving to boulder in a few weeks and is planning on that series as part of her bid for a pro card this season.

sounds like you have the foundations there for a good season and simply need to start fine tuning things and getting the tri specific work done.

My wife ran the Oly last year, it was very well ran and organized.  I got to watch Matt Reed and other Pros race and finish.  I hear that all three of the tris and all their other runs are very good.

Hey,

I think I'd like to be in your mentor group. I have wanted to do triathlons for several years, but have always known I needed to get back in shape 1st. I am 25, ran cross country in high school, I was never the fastest, but I had fallen off of fitness ever since. In the last two months I have been eating clean and weight training about four times a week, with about as much cardio, mostly intervals/HIIT though. My approach has kinda been that of a bodybuilder cutting cycle. I am leaner than ever, I have lost 15 lbs and I'm pretty sure it's been almost all fat. My strength has really increased and I'm in pretty good cardiovascular shape (for me lately). My appearance is not what I want it to be yet (chasing the elusive six pack), and I had planned on waiting until I had my physique dialed in before training for a tri, but I've been lurking on here for a few days and decided I'd like to give it a go. I am a little apprehensive that I won't be able to keep up my weight training, but I would be willing to sacrifice a little I am in lose fat/maintain muscle mode anyhow. I am not a very strong swimmer. I was a lifeguard for two years in HS so I am comfortable in the water, though I have never swam competitively, I can't even do the butterfly. Still need to buy a bike too, which will almost certainly be a used entry level aluminum road bike <$1000. Anyhow I look forward to hearing your thoughts. My name is David btw lol  ...Thanks

For anyone interested, I am currently working a sponsorship deal with Kuota in which they will sell us 2008 Kuota K-Factor SL tri-bikes for $1100.  These bikes retail in the $2500 rane. I coul include anyone from this group on the team list and thus get them the deal.  I am trying to see if they will make us a deal on a road bike model as well.  The K-factor is an all carbon bike.  Very light.

I will update as we go along with it.

if you can swing something with them road bike wise let me know.

i'm still waiting to hear back from a few of my sponsors/potenial ones for '09, so i am not even sure what i am open to do, but please keep us posted.

This would be awesome! I'm more on the market for a road bike but I definitely wouldn't pass up a deal like that on a good tri bike, would have to keep looking at road bikes though.  Definitely keep us posted, thanks!

That would be so great to see you there. It is a great, if not killing course. Well off to eat something. I think I'll ride the trainer later...I'd need water wings for the bike. And maybe run some outside if is slacks off.

All this rain talk is making me jealous.   We've been getting snowed on consistently for the past few weeks.  Although I have found that running in the snow is quite fun

Throw on the snow shoes and think of the "training effect" of your enhance race performance when you take them off.

It's 90+ degrees here year round except for a few days. I'd be THRILLED to run in snow! ....tried running on the beach a few times that was interesting....

....so this might be kind of a dumb question, but I should stop weight training my legs, right? ...if I'm gonna be putting lots of time into running and swimming (later biking) I don't want to really overtrain or get injured or anything. Back in HS when I was running cross country I had pretty massive hamstrings having never touched them with weights, so I'm wondering if I should take the same approach here... I'm gonna get into a bike shop and get fitted once Christmas is over, and I may have found a place for private swim lessons! Thanks!

on the weight training front, i will reply more tonight, but if you enjoy it go for it, just know it wont make you faster, but there are other benifits. more on that tonight once i have a bit more time.

hope everyone is enjoying the holidays!

on the weights front, here is what i think/would advise (there is a ton of opinion on this flying around, so somewhere you have to decide for yourself).

I think lifting can help, in many many ways. what it wont do is directly make you faster in the running/tri scene. running, biking, or swimming more will do that. that said, lifting can do a TON to help prevent injury, help work muscles for balance that get ignored in triathlon, etc. tri and running/cycling are very front to back movements, and nothing else, so lifting gives you a good chance to work on the muscles that get ignored.

Another common myth is that if you lift you will get huge; if you dont eat more than you are burning, you wont in fact do that, so lifting in that respect wont hurt you.

it really comes down to what you are looking for here, and sense 99% of us do this purely for fun and not racing pro, do what makes you happy. lifting wont make you faster, but if you enjoy it by all means go for it.

my thoughts on how i would do it: if you are a typical runner, lifting some upper body is actually going to help, however, i am coming from the other end of things, as a former rower i have a lot of muscle to still lose. i lift over the winter to help work on overall fitness and stay inside out of crappy weather. i work on muscles (mostly lower body for me) that dont get worked or i have injured in the past. once i get outside full time (mid march), the lifting goes out, but i will be training 20-25 hours a week and cant really see fitting that in and having the other workouts go well.
