Yes i do have another read recommendation for the group..

Total Immersion is a great swimming book.. it tells and gives workouts to attain efficiency in the pool.

Your First Triathlon by Joe Friel.. great book. it tells you about the history of tri.. it also gives you a first race outlook, equipments purchases, it also has a checklist for race day.. Oh yeah it has some workout ideas at the end.

There tons of other readings.. If you are into yoga.. there's a book called Yoga for Athletes.. awesome book..

Other Books.. Triathlon training bible, strength training for triathletes, ironman training guide..

Thanks Kristin...

I'd like to join your group if you're still taking newbies. I got inspired by my brother in law this year who did his first IM in Panama City at age 50. I'm 46 now and creeping closer...would love to have that as a goal as well..maybe sooner? I have gone to the gym for years but without much direction and have gained a few pounds along the way. Ready for a new "big" goal.

Maurice,

Would love to join the group if you are still interested in expanding the group.

I have been doing Tri's (Sprints) for a few years. Was sidelined a year ago due to a pulmonary embolism and have been working towards a comeback in 2009. I have been using the BT log more actively since this fall. I have set my goals for 2009 and would love to work with others as we strive towards our goals.

Which race do you want to do? We can figure out a for you to follow.. swim workouts, weights, biking (road and trainer), and running. how much time can you dedicate to training?

Hi,

I was going to see if I could join your group. I am 22 about to be 23 I have never been athletic but recently started getting into fitness and have decided to fill up my 2009 with a few runs and a Danskin Sprint triathalon and just see where it takes me.

I'd also love to join if you have space. I'm 29 (almost 30) living in NYC and have done one tri a few years ago with lots of help from BT, but haven't done a tri since. I've trained the past two years for part of the year, but never made it to a race. I've signed up to do the NYC tri this year - Olympic Distance - along with my brother and a few other friends. I'm trying to make sure that I keep up with training, and stay accountable. The first part of my training plan was to lose about 20 pounds to make training easier, which I managed to do -- now the fun part starts.

In terms of training plans, my brother and I are working on coming up with a training plan -- he's been doing this much longer than I have so he has some good ideas. For me, I'm trying to incorporate Heart rate training as I have done very little of it before. I'm also a pretty novice biker -- I run and I was a competitive swimmer, but biking, especially in NYC, always scares me. So that's the other big challenge for me.

First race of the year will be a couple of indoor sprint triathlons followed by a race in May that is almost an olympic distance. Trying to get some running/races (including half-marathon) while it is too cold to train outdoors.

 How about you?

All,

Warm ups and cool downs are very important in training. This will help prevent injury.

Warm up- Gets the body warm and ready to workout. Loosens the muscles...
So in the pool.. you would do maybe 100-200m easy.. then after do some stretching
on a run.. say a 5 mile.. the first half mile you can use as a warm-up. you can choose
to stop and stretch your choice.
on the bike.. use maybe the first 10 mins.. med cadence 90 - 100rpm..

Cool down- Helps bring the body back to original operation state.. Lowering the HR..
pool - 100 to 200 very easy..
run - maybe the 10 mins...
bike - last 10 mins.

also want to do this while weight training..

Some of you may know this and some may not.. This is just general information. So when i look at you logs.. please incorporate warm ups and cool downs.. so very important..

you can do treadmill, elliptical, or exercise bike.. nothing major. 5-10mins.. that's all you need.

but as a note for those that are going for weight loss.. it is best to lift weights first and then do you major cardio work (burning the glycogen from the blood). I have the reason at home.. i will paraphrase it and post it later.

I just read through the whole thread and I will Introduce myself...

My name is Katie i am single, 22 years old and will be 23 on Jan 28. I reached a point recently where I just thought my health is rediculously out of control. So I signed up fo a 5k but got sick very close to it and endup walking with a friend who just finished Chemo.  Afterwards I decided I needed something else to work towards and a cousin of mine a few years back did the Danskin Sprint Triathalon. I have never been athletic at all. But I figured I might as well try. So I have jumped in the deep end and don't really know what I am in for. I am a full time college student and work full time as well.  So there you have it a short glimpse into my reasoning.

kadams120,

Welcome to the group. I promise you will be successful if you stick to your plan and avoid doubting yourself. Remember - half (if not more) of training and racing is all mental. I try to imagine myself crossing the finish line everytime I get tired, frustrated, stressed, etc..  Best of luck and Happy New Year!

WOW...looks like the group filled up quickly

Your a popular coach Maurice

To share a little bit more about myself in terms of introduction, I am 32 years old and live in NYC with my 3 year old English Bulldog names Tatum (T for short)

My approach is to start off slow and see where it takes me

Therefore, my first race will be a relatively short one. The New York City Central Park Tri on Aug 9 (1/4 mile sim - 12 mile bike - 3 mile run)

If the first couple of months of training go well, and if there is still room to register, I may consider The Nautica New York City Tri on Jul 26 (1500 meter swim - 24.9 mile bike - 6.2 mile run)

Like Kristen, I am starting (Jan 5 official start date) my training with the Sprint - 3x Balanced - 20 Week

I'm hoping this will give me the best kick-off to the sport

Best wishes to all and looking forward to an amazing new venture

Robert

Good Day,

It's good to see some introductions going on.. that is awesome. Katie.. you will finish the tri and you will do it smiling.. All of you will.. That is my goal for you all... if you all were closer i would come and see you on your first race. This is very important to me, that we all succeed. You have my undivided attention. I sent a happy new year message to everyone.. once i get to know you all better they will a little more personal.

As you go out this evening.. toast to your upcoming race season, and drink one for me.. because i'm doing the same thing...

Hi Robert,

I am really happy that someone else in this group is doing the same training plan as I am! We will have to compare notes from time to time.

Is there anyone else who is planning on doing the Sprint - 3x Balanced - 20 Week training plan?
