NAME: JTchiefs / John

STORY:
I'm in the US Army.  While in Iraq, I got bored with just my normal physical training every morning and felt like I needed something to motivate me again.  I started training the last three months of my tour, but fell off the regimen, because of some marital issues that came up when I got back.  I started training again in Jan/Feb, which has kind of been my therapy to take my mind off things.  I am really motivated and love the training and look forward to it everyday.  I come from an athletic background of sports and running, but fell away from some of it for a while.

FAMILY STATUS:
 Married, with 3 boys (5, 2, 1) and 1 girl (3).

CURRENT TRAINING:
I'm not currently working off of any plan.

LAST YEAR'S RACES:
 I didn't race last year.

2009 RACES:

- Velburg 5K Osterlauf  24'36"
- Sulzbach-Rosenberg Duathlon
- Velburg City Duathlon
- Globus Steinberger See Triathlon
- Sparkassen Bike & Run
- Weiden City Crossduathlon (XTERRA)
-???

WEIGHTLOSS:
Maintain current weight 5'10" @ 165 lbs

WHAT AM I LOOKING FOR IN A MENTOR:  I would like someone to help steer me in the right direction for improving speed and adding much longer distances.  I have goals of Ironman Germany 70.3 in 2010, Ironman Germany 2011, and running a half marathon as well as a full marathon.  It would also help to meet for tri oriented people as there aren't too many other Americans where I live here in Germany

Hey Scott ~ nice to see a friendly face!

Ada ~ We are on Oahu.  It's cool being here but I'm anxious to get back to the Mainland and closer to family which won't be for another 2 years.  Are you from here?

Aaron ~ You mentioned leaving the nitty gritty to our blogs...does that mean you would prefer we not chit chat on here as I can be quite the chatterbox and don't want to annoy the crap out of you!
As for your comment about the HR ~ I was a bit confused but then again, that's not hard to do.  The spike you were referring to, is that just from starting to run at a "comfortable hard" pace, as you put it?  Basically starting slow then settling into your race pace?  (Am I making sense now?)

NAME: Bob/willie05

STORY: I live in Pittsburgh and am 42.  I'm now in my 3rd years of training and doing triathlons.  At the start of 2007, I couldn't believe how badly I was out of shape, so I decided to get serious about losing weight.  Pretty soon I remembered that I always wanted to race in a triathlon.  I always liked to swim and ride bikes, I had a mountain bike that I won at work, but I never liked to run.   So I started going to the gym using the Beginner Exercise program on BT.  That got me in a good habit of training and building up my base.  By the time it warmed up, I was itching to get out, and had a great time training and then doing two sprint tri's that year.  I also went from 210 to 165 lbs.  Cool

Going into 2008, my mistake was that I figured I knew what I was doing and put it into cruise control.  I never got the speed back that I had in 2007 and put on weight even as I was training.  I got a tri-bike, and did 2 olympics and 1 sprint, but my results weren't nearly as good as I was expecting.

FAMILY STATUS: I've been married for 13 years, and we have two daughters who are 11 and 8.

CURRENT TRAINING: I'm running a half marathon in just over two weeks, so I've tried to concentrate on my running - both for this race and to jumpstart my training for the rest of the year.  I felt that my running really let me down last year, so this race is a way of keeping me focused.

LAST YEAR'S RACES:  Did two Olympics, and one Sprint.  Biggest mistake with the first race - Morgantown Olympic - was only getting my tri-bike about a week before the race.  I messed up the aero bottle, and ended up losing half the drink.  I also wasn't really prepared for the 10k, and struggled on the hills the last mile or so.   Then did the Pittsburgh Olympic 4 weeks later.  I was way more prepared for that.  But then not even 30 secs into the bike, I rounded a corner and crashed right into a guy standing there with his bike! Frown  Lost all my drink and a gel.  I was okay, but half the gears on the bike were gone.  By the time the run came, I was struggling from being low on nutrition and just took it easy.  Finally did a sprint in Akron with no mishaps except for a sore hamstring that I injured a couple weeks before.  It was tough watching everyone run right by me...

2009 RACES:
Pittsburgh 1/2 Marathon in May
Sprint Tri in June outside Pgh
Pittsburgh Olympic
Akron Sprint
Savageman HIM

WEIGHTLOSS:
I've climbed back up to 190, so I need to get that back off - and now!

WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR IN A MENTOR:  As much as I love the training, I've struggled keeping the motivation up - especially in the winter.  Any advice there will help!  This will be my first year going up to the HIM distance, so I'll need guidance there.  I'm hoping to use this year to train to get to that distance, then next year improve on my time in an HIM.

I usually gt on my bike and spin for 5 to 10 minutes on the trainer in the garage.  Sometimes wehen I run after I swim, I just change and go to the track and start running.

I'd say to start jogging for your warm up.  Get the exact muscles you'll be using moving.  Experiment a little with how much time you warm up.  I have a client who needs to jog for 20min before she can start the actual run portion of her workouts.

Same goes for races.  I hear lots of people say stuff about how they don't want to get tired before they even start.  But getting your muscles warm and HR up makes a world of difference.  That initial spike in HR at the start doesn't hurt nearly as bad and it's much easier to push yourself when you can start comfortably hard.

Did that last phrase make sense to anyone but me?

I don;t know if it was grammatically correct but I understood it.  Does that say something bad about you or me?  Or both of us?

So - in a tri - do you suggest doing the same thing?  Getting your heart rate up?  I generally like to swim some before the start - but sometimes they won't let you and sometimes, the way the waves are set, your heart will settle back down before your wave goes off.

I count 15 including our fearlesss leader.  Did I miss anyone.
I have seen people make these cool charts in the challenge areas to post in your goals section - but I does not haz the skillz to do so.

Oh yeah - one more thing - I joke all of the time.  I hardly ever say anything that would seem like an attack on these boards.  It's just who I am.  I am somewhat dry and very sarcastic as well as self-depricating.  Please do not take offense - whatever I say - you can be assured that I did not mean it in any way they may have caused you to take offense.

For instance - I was going to ask Ada if I needed to run down the male and female members for her - but you see - she does not know me yet and might have taken that as me being a jerk, which I would not have meant to be.

Thanks for the list! I used it to help take a first stab at the cool chart. However, I pretty much stink at HTML and deciding on colors, so I can't get the image not to repeat nor can I decide what colors look good. Does anyone want to take this and pretty it up some more?

Does anyone carry gels with them on runs or in running races?  I never thought of that until today during a run, and I was thinking that it might come in handy to suck one down during the half marathon I have coming up.

I've done it before, but the problem that I have is that I need a lot of water for a gel and I don;t drink all that much during a race (I don't like the sloshy stomach feeling).  In Tri's I generally try to get all of any Gel I will be having in with about 20 minutes left, so I can drink enough to get the stickiness out of my throat and still not sloah when I run.

Yes, I carry gels on longer runs, 'cause I'm borderline athena, and will feel bonky after an hour.

When is your race? I wouldn't try anything then that you haven't used in training. It took me a long time to find a gel that I liked the taste of and that didn't upset my stomach. Now I bring them on most runs just in case, but I really only use them on longer runs . You'll have to experiment to find which ones work for you and how often you need them to get the best results.

I to don't know how to put the chart into training blog. I am big on gels when I run anything longer then an hour and yes with lots of water. I will suck down about 5-6 packs when I run a Marathon but I train with them to make sure the stomache is okay with them for some people there stomache doesn't sit well with them. I sometime will take one at the end of my bike ride before I get off to run in my tri's . I would like to here from you longer distance folks who have done half & IM what kind of intake you all are able to take in?

Thanks for the input! I was thinking that I better try it during a longer run this weekend to see what I think before I do it in the race - I'm slowly learning....  My concern is that I struggle getting water down while I'm running.  We'll see how it goes. Smile

I do use them during triathlons.  I've never found one that I don't like!  I even use AccelGel with protein that a lot of folks don't care for.

I am still experimenting with longer distances both in biking and running so no expert advice here.  I was warned, however, not to try the gels for the first time right before a race for the same reasons as mentioned above.  It may take a try or three to come up with the combination of gel and water to get the mixture so that it doesn't cause stomach issues.

It is now.  I haven't taken any gels before as my longest runs have only been an hour (about an 7.5-8 miles) or so, and my body hasn't told me it's needs to fuel for that length or time/distance yet.
