Subject: RE: Drinks and gels - what do you use?All these corporate-made supplements are fine and all, but they cost a fortune compared to plain ol' bulk maltodextrin. It's not a gimmick - Hammer perpetuem is likely 80, if not 90+% maltodextrin. It's a complex sugar absorbed in under an hour but won't spike your glucose, and has been used by pros for a long time. 1 cup yields 400ish calories per 28oz water bottle, with little flavor and no goopiness. Add whatever cheapo flavor you like. Best part - it costs 1/10th anything out there. You can buy it for $57 for 50 lbs SHIPPED at Honeygrain. It works -I've been using it as my go-to fuel on 4-6 hour mountainous bike rides on wknds, and I haven't needed any solids whatsoever since. Buy a big plastic "paint" pail to hold it all - Home Depot for about $7. Split an order with friends - 2-4 of 'em. For one user alone, it will last about 2 friggin' years if you're using 4-6 cups per week. (I use 3-4 cups for an 80 mile ride ) Edited by agarose2000 2009-08-28 11:01 PM
