Elite 2998 Fishers, Indiana | Subject: RE: Lone Star Triathlon Festival - Half Iron : Official Thread sailaway2011 - 2009-12-15 3:43 PM Lonestar's going to be my first HIM! I'm really looking forward to it. Family's going to be there, so I'll have alot of motivation, I think they're making t-shirts too! We're taking orders now btw. hahaha Anyway...What should I expect? Alright, general question: If there was one thing you could have done differently on your first HIM, what would if have been? Thanks,Alex Ah, so the Navy crew is making their way down again huh. Last year the shirts had a nice manly pink on it, and it made me laugh...I'm biased though. How many squids are doing the HIM? What should you expect--well, it's late April, so it might be fairly warm, the water is in a bay, so shouldn't be choppy, but should still be wetsuit legal. Bike is flat, but could be quite windy, or not...but good chance of some windy. Run is 3 loops and flat, but again, the heat might kick in as well. It could also be fairly humid. But, expect GREAT support. Endorfun puts on a super race, so you'll be totally taken care of throughout the race. If I could change something about my first HIM, I would've said more bike fitness and/or understand pacing better. |

Triathlete Nation ~ Texas! | Subject: RE: Lone Star Triathlon Festival - Half Iron : Official Thread The Few, The Proud! Go Marines! (Britt & Gary)... What would I do differently for my first HIM? More bike for sure... change from a volume approach (50-70 mile moderate rides) to 40-60 mile higher intensity sessions. Get nutrition on the bike dialed in earlier in training and stick with it - no changes what so ever. The run will benefit from this. |

Alright, general question: If there was one thing you could have done differently on your first HIM, what would if have been? Thanks,Alex Me I would have run more frequently and built up my run durability which would have meant not crashing 4 months before the race. For my first HIM I was overtrained and about 3-4 weeks before that race my bike power just left me..it was so hard to understand at the time. I ride with power and my watts kept dropping week to week. |

I ride with power and my watts kept dropping week to week. I think this is a common thing amongst triathletes... and it is more detrimental to race day performance then most realize. I would rather go into a race 10-15% under trained than 1% overtrained. A solid plan with sound recovery worked in will certainly breed success much better than just volume+intensity 'gotta get fit' type of workouts. Hey KathyG ~ I am not saying that is what happend to you... just using the overtrained aspect. There are several reasons why we overtrain. ie compensate for injuries early on, missed workouts getting forced in, not following a good designed plan... |

Hey KathyG ~ I am not saying that is what happend to you... just using the overtrained aspect. There are several reasons why we overtrain. ie compensate for injuries early on, missed workouts getting forced in, not following a good designed plan... I had a coach who put together my training. Since I crashed in June, I didn't get solid run and swim training for 6 weeks then 2.5 months until my HIM in early October so he had me ramp up my running quickly which made my bike suffer. I do much better with consistent training building up volume very gradually. |

Expert 790 | Subject: RE: Lone Star Triathlon Festival - Half Iron : Official Thread This will also be my first HIM. I feel very lucky to have the race only about 20 minutes from my house. With all the pressure (self imposed pressure), I'm glad I don't have to worry about traveling. Best of luck to all if have entered, especially first timers like myself. |

We are all hoping for the announcement that Texas will have a full IM. Keith has been saying no but we can always hope! |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Lone Star Triathlon Festival - Half Iron : Official Thread I started working with my new coach two weeks ago so my training is balanced, I'm doing s/b/r on a consistent basis and feel more like a triathlete again..it's good. Roads are pretty yucky here so mostly painful interval trainer rides for me. Swim lesson today see if I'm making progress on improving technique. Doing first 5K in over a year Friday to set my running zones. |

Pro 4174 Keller, Texas | Subject: RE: Lone Star Triathlon Festival - Half Iron : Official Thread I have been happy with my workouts, at least the bike and run. Swimming has been pretty much non-existant and I really need to do something about that. Today I need to make up the 40 minute run I did not do yesterday and alsw a swim, and yes, I am really going to make every attempt to do it tonight! |
