Hi - I would like to join this group too.  My name is Karen, and I live in Texas.   I completed my first sprint triathlon in October.  I'm signed up for my first half marathon in March.  I would like to complete a few sprint triathlons in 2010, and maybe an Olympic tri as well.  I have 3 kids that are in lots of activities so I'm always struggling to have time for training and working out.  A few goals I have for 2010 are to loose about 15-20 pounds and to improve in swimming.

Hi Jen,
My name is Kathy and I would love to join your group if there is still space!

I have only done a try-a-tri last summer after loosing about 80 pounds.   I had started a program in Sept of 2008 at 250lbs, and decided to use the tri as a motivator to keep me going.  I LOVED it and am looking forward to doing a sprint and maybe even an olympic distance this summer. I have lost almost 90lbs now, and would like to try and take off another 10-15.

I don't have too much of problem with the swim, and love to bike, but knee issues have given me a problem with the run, so I definately need to work on that slowly to try and avoid more injury.

Looking forward to being part of the group and learning from everyone!

Hi Jen,

I'd love to join your group!

I am training for the Iron Girl in Syracuse, NY next summer (August 2010). It's a long way off, but I'm a true beginner so need the head start! My current training is getting back into the gym, and spending the winter in the pool and in spinning classes so I can hit the road when the snow clears.

I'm about to turn 37, single, overweight (on the road back to fit) and really looking forward to finishing this race with my sister, a marathoner who lives a state away...so hoping connecting with a group and logging my workouts can keep me honest (and active through a looooong winter)!

Hi Karen!  Glad to have you!

Congrats on finishing your first tri!  Which half marathon are you signed up for?

It's always a challenge to find time for training.  I can't imagine how much busier I would be with three kids!  Hopefully we can help figure out ways to fit it all in.

Hi Kathy!  There's still room, so welcome.

Congratulations on the weight loss!  That is so impressive!!

I think tris are a great motivator to keep going.  I also like having different sports because just running can get a little dull after awhile.

Sorry to hear about the knee problems.  It can be really frustrating!  Gradual building can help avoid knee pain and problems and making sure you have the right shoes/not worn out shoes.

Hi Jenna! Welcome to the group!

I've heard great things about the Iron Girl tris and getting to do it with your sister is really cool.  Sounds like your plan for the winter will help get you a good base and you'll be in good shape to start a tri training plan once the weather is nicer.

Logging workouts here really does help keep you honest.  Plus, you get to see how much progress you've made since you've started.

Jen - I signed up for the Dallas Rock N Roll Half.   I did it in part to motivate my husband to complete his first half too, he has said he wants to run a half but then quits training halfway through, plus I need a goal to work towards for myself.

I was looking at the pics in your album - we have a gray kitten that looks a lot like your Taji.  I love the pic of her watching the tv!

That's one of my favorites!  She would try to catch the bikes as they went past on the Tour.  She still does it once in awhile.

Technically, anyone can still post in here.  But, they really shouldn't now that the thread is marked closed.  It should just be the people who have posted so far.

I'll make a list of everyone tomorrow with links to their logs.  I put it in my log (you can see one from the November challenge as an example) and then it is easy to inspire people and check in on their training.  I'm working on writing up some more information, too.  Should have that posted tomorrow.

For now, feel free to ask questions here or just chat in general.  We can do pretty much whatever we want.

Ok, a bit about me...

I'm Melissa, 28 years old, living in Seattle and working on a degree in horticulture.

I did my first sprint tri june 2008 and was hooked.  I did my first oly this fall and loved it (I am not really sure why though).   I volunteered at IM Wisconsin this year with a friend...it was awesome.

I have been swimming since I was really young and, although I am not super fast, I swim well.  I was on my high school swim team and have taught many swim lessons and coached summer swim leagues.  I have only swam twice since my race in September and I am sure that my endurance is shot.

I am a casual bicyclist.  Up until this fall I did all my riding on a older mountain bike.  I did the oly in Wisconsin so I rented a bike...I splurged on Fugi team RC.  Oh the wonders of a well designed carbon fiber road bike.    It was a dream to ride.  I then came back home to my Mountain bike.  It is not quite as fun to ride anymore.  I have since then started building my own special sort of tri bike.

I struggle with running injuries.  They started back in High School Track.  I discovered that I was actually fast enough to place in races (sub 5:50 miles and 12 minute 2 miles!) and ran the last couple of races of the season despite the pain.   Then I saw a DR and found out that I had developed stress fractures in both shins.   I didn't run more than a few times over the next 10 years.  I have been trying to get back into running shape, but my I am not consistent enough with my training.   I would love to be a fast runner again, but first I need to be an injury free runner.

I am joining a mentor group because I really need the accountability.  I have been struggling with depression issues lately and am currently lacking motivation.

I hope to complete a couple of sprints and a couple of oly's in 2010...maybe one of the oly's could be a half if I train enough.

Hi everyone!  Any plans for today?

I'd like to write up some information about BT - talking about the forums, training logs, available plans, etc.  Are there any specific questions you'd like me to answer?  Any things you've seen people do or heard about, but you don't know how or what?  Terms you find confusing?

I'm working with my chiropractor (who's also ART certified) so I'm doing ART, lots of stretches and rolling, and doing some strength training to try and get my posterior chain to pull its own weight (that's what we think started the whole ITB problem to begin with).  It seems to be getting better slowly but surely -- I'm up to running 5k with no problems, and I don't have any trouble at all on the bike.

Artemis - 2009-12-14 3:58 PM Kat, there is definitely still room!  I'd love to have you.

ITB problems are so hard to deal with.  Are you doing any stretches or PT for them?  I have a few recommendations if you need them.

I'm here for cheering, motivation, and kicks in the butt if need be.

I did my 6 AM spin class this morning, so hopefully I'll have time to schedule an ART session and then hit the pool this PM.I've been struggling a bit with two-a-day workouts -- I'd like to ideally be doing a 3x3x3 week plus the strength training I need to do to keep my leg musculature balanced, which means that almost every day I do 2 workouts. My problem is that I can't get quality workouts in both sports if I do both in the morning, but I have scheduling problems with getting to the gym twice in a day. Is it better to do my two-a-days back-to-back and have a few workouts not be as high-quality as if I were doing them solo, or to do them split between morning and evening but risk missing some of them? I'm mostly trying to build endurance on the swim, build some endurance and some power on the bike (my weakest link), and slow the progression by which I'm losing running ability due to having hurt myself.

Personally, I prefer to split them between morning and evening and risk missing a few of them, but doing them back to back would be fine if you are having problems getting to the gym multiple times in a day.  If you are going to do them back to back, I would try to have both workouts be easier than if you split them.  So, no interval training or biking all out during those workouts.  It's much easier to hurt yourself if you are tired.

Glad you are able to do some running!

ART is something I've been interested in trying, but haven't had the chance yet.  I went for trigger point therapy and myofascial release last month and that made a huge difference for me.  I did a lot of PT last year and still try to do some of the stretches and exercises.  It's tough!  The worst was a couple of cortisone injections into the ITB.  Don't want to have to do that again, so it scared me into taking care of myself.

I've got the first of three articles about BT that should help you learn the basics.  The three will be:

Part 1: Training Blog

Part 2: Training Plans and Races

Part 3: The Forums

There will probably be a Part 4: Odds and Ends to answer all of your questions.

I'm writing the Training Blog first because I think it is the most important.  I really want to encourage each one of you to use it!  It's a great tool.

As always, let me know if there are any questions.

All About BT Part 1 – Training Logs

What is a training log and why should I use it?  The training log is a place to write down your training – how much did you run, bike, or swim today?  There’s a place to record all of those, as well as strength training, other sports (stretching, yoga, ice hockey, whatever!), your weight, and a blog.  You can write whatever you want in the blog.  You don’t have to write anything and you can write even when you don’t log training.

Using the training log helps other people answer questions you might have about your training, like “Do you think I could do this race?” If the person doesn’t know you, it’s hard to get a good idea of what you’ve been doing for the past few months.  Plus, it’s a great way for you to see how much progress you’ve made!  I’ve been tracking my training at BT since 2005.  I can do so much more now than I could then and it is great to be able to go back and see that.

How do I use it? At the top of your screen is a training log button.  If you click on it, you go to your training log.  By default, the past 7 days display.  Each day has a link for “training”, “blog”, and “inspire me”.  More on “inspire me” in a bit.

If you want to add training, just click on “training” for whatever day you did it.  That will open up a bigger window.  You’ll have a place to write down your swim, bike, or run with the time and/or distance.  If you give it both distance and time, you can click “calc” and that calculates your pace.  Fill in whatever you want.  Make sure to click save when you are done!

If you want to only write in your blog, click on “blog”.  That gives you a text box where you can write.  After you save, this shows up underneath any training for the day you add it to.  I sometimes write multiple times in the same day and I put times by each.

How do I add fancy text or pictures? The easiest way is to have a text editor show up for you.  You can change your preferences to have this display in your logs (and forums) by following these steps:

1. Click on the settings icon at the top of your screen.

2. Click on the forum settings tab.

3. On the settings sub-tab, there is a column for “Use rich editor for blog and forum posts?”  Set this to “yes” and the click “submit”

Now when you go to your blog or the forums, you will have a toolbar with lots of buttons (kind of like Microsoft word).  There’s bold, italics, etc.  There is also a button with a picture of a little tree.  If you have a link to a photo, you can click on this button, enter the link, and the photo will display.  The button that looks like chain links allows you to add a web link.  Type some text, highlight it, and then click the chain link and paste in the web address. Now other people can follow your link.

How do I inspire someone? How do I respond to an inspire someone left for me? Inspires are a really great part of BT.  People can go in your log and click the “inspire me” link, type a short message for you and then you can see it later.  It’s a great way to wish someone good luck on a race, congratulate them on an accomplishment, or just say hi.

To leave someone a message, click “inspire me” in their log.  Type your message and click submit.  They’ll get a message at the upper left corner of their screen (it will say the number of new inspires in bright red).  To check yours, just click on the same link and it will display all of your inspires for that day.

You can get to someone else’s log by clicking on the “log” button at the bottom of one of their messages.  Or, if it is someone you will go to often, you can add them as a friend and their picture will show up in your training log.  To do that:

1. Click on the “settings” button

2. Click on the “Training Blog Customization” tab.

3. Click on the “Friends” subtab.

4. Type in your friend’s name in one of the spots.

5. Click apply.

If you are in your inspire window and want to respond to a particular inspire, just click on the “reply” button.  That will take you to your friend’s log and quote what they wrote to you.  Now you can leave a message for them.

Those are the basics of the training blog.  There are some more fancy features, but they are not so important now.  If you are desperate to know all the ins and outs, check out the help docs: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/index.asp?catid=122
