Subject: RE: Jellyfish's Group - OPEN

Hello:  I have just this very minute joined BT.  I've decided - at the age of 60 - to go all out and train for my first sprint tri.  I live in upstate NY - on a lake - and would love to join this group.
I swim as much as possible (pool) and am hoping to train w/the Total Immersion program this summer.  The event is in August - on Seneca Lake (one of the Finger Lakes) in NY state.

I can run a bit - coming off an injury in October.  My furthest face was a 10K..  I also bike - most miles about 22, although this summer was not a big bike summer.

I am motivated, scared, and willing to do the work necessary.  My plan is to perform my best; whatever and however, that appears.  I do not want to pressure myself to over-perform.

So, it's a fine balance.  I will wait to hear from your group... and take a look at the training log..
and will be in the pool at 6 am tomorrow, despite the 0 degree temp. outside!  BBBRRRRRRR...

Thanks...a lot!!!

Helen Ann

Deb - Welcome to the group!
Have you done any racing in the past? Also, what is your current training like? If you could start posting your workouts to the log it would be great so I can get a sense of your current fitness level.

Name: David

Story:  Started tri's 3 years ago after a friend was getting married and wanted to "train" to loose a couple lbs.  Did 1st race and sucked but loved every minute of it.  With no background in S/B/Ring and years of stick & ball sports I still stuggle to excell in this sport.  It's been a challenge to find the correct mix of training and rest for me.  My biggest struggle in IM's is my nutrition, I have tried 3 radically different plans with the same results GI issues on the run!!!  I tell everyone if I nail a race and hit my goal time I will quite racing (lol)

Family Status:  I am married to another triathlete with 3 dogs (2 yorkies, and a boxer named KONA his job is to get me faster running lol)

Current training:  Been slow last month with 2 IM's and 3 HIM's last year I was drained after IMFL.  I have been doing little except a 2 to 3 hr bike on Sundays and a run or two during the week.  I start my training This Sat as I am heading to key west for a training "vacation".  Going to focus this off season on the run more than ever.

2009 Races:  70.3FL (terrible race walked with GI), 3 oly races best finish 12th oa, IMKY (beat last yr time but still missed run goal by 1hr) 70.3 steelhead (PR in half even though I was using it as a training day for IM),  IMFL (same as my other IM's decent swim, decent bike, terrrrrrible run no food for 3+ hrs)

2010 Races:  Rev3 1/2 Knoxville,  IMCDA, 70.3 Steelhead, IMKY and a few smaller races around us.

Weightloss:  I have gained about 10lbs since Nov but not too worried. I am going to try a new race weight this year to get my PtoW ratio better.  08 I was 159 at IMKY, 09 I was 165 at IMKY,,,, this year I am going to see how I feel at 155 or so.

My hurdles:  Running is my biggest limiter as I don't seem to be able to build my speed/endurance.  I am by no means a good swimmer or biker but I loose most of my time on the run.

Corrie I see you did Novi, I did that race a couple years ago in the pouring rain but it was still a great race.  Did they have it at that small inland pond? If so I got alittle off course and got stuck in the seewee (freaked us out)

So does anyone have any early races planned???  Our 1st is an indoor tri at Miami OH unv.

No early races for me ... first out of the gate will be a HM on 5/3. Then the tri-season starts in earnest! Really looking forward to it this year as I have my head on straight and no IM's scheduled (although I am in the lottery for Kona)...

jellyfish - 2009-12-29 7:56 PM Jason - You're in. Welcome to the group. Tell us a little about yourself.

Name: Jason Holland

Story:  On Jan 1st of this year (2009) I started exercising because I was started to feel older than my 38 years should make me feel. I weighed 304 lbs. At first I started out with just swimming three days a week. At first I couldn’t complete a lap. I now regularly swim a mile or more in workouts. I started doing some sprint tri’s with friends in order to stay motivated.

Family Status:  Married with two dogs

Current Training: Right now I’m trying to follow the oly distance training program on BT. I find that life interfere with training more than I would like it to.

2009 Races: 3 Sprint tri’s – first two finished at the bottom of the Clydesdale ranks, the third was a big improvement to about midpack with a top 5 in the swim.

2010 Races:  My A race is the St. Anthony’s Tri in St. Petersburg FLA in April. It’s an oly distance. I also have several sprints and some cycling TT’s on the list as well.

Weightloss – I started at 304 and now weight around 274. I seem to have hit a plateau and am trying to lose more.

My hurdles: Ranked in order from best to worst are Swimming, cycling and running with the running being abysmally bad. In Clydesdale I hold my own in swimming (finishing in the top ten or so each time, and as long as the course is flat, I do ok on the bike. But no matter the course in the run, I suck. And suck badly. The problem is not lack of breath but rather pain that accumulates in my lower back. Shin splints have stopped for the most part but the back problem continues. I find I often have to walk after a ¼ mile to ½ mile to let the burning subside.

  1. Goals: Finish the oly tri in April with a respectable time, improve my running and my form and efficiency in all three disciplines.

At this point I will try anything so any suggestions are welcome!!!   Part of the reason I do so many races is no matter how hard I train I cannot simulate a race, it seems everything is off just allittle in the race and what works in training does not work during a race.

Have you been to a sports doctor or chiropractor about the pain? Perhaps your core muscles need to be strengthened? I would go to a specialist to try to determine what is causing your back pain from running.

Tri-Talk has an interesting nutrition calculator for racing. You can find it here.

I also struggle with proper hydration and nutrition in Oly and HIM races, for me it's not GI distress, but rather getting dizzy to the point of passing out or puking. It is definitely worth continuing to practice different methods in race simulation type environments and eventually something will work. I have found some success with First Endurance products - though I dilute their drink mix otherwise it's too strong tasting.

Hi Jellyfish!
Well, as far as times go I'm SLOW! I'm an Athena and my last Oly time was horrible (just under 4 hours)...I bonked at the end of the bike and ended up walking the entire 10K in 100+ degree weather! Not smart! I am slow in the swim (I also need to invest in a wetsuit as I was swimming in 67 degree water without one), solid on the bike, and slow on running. I average about a 12-13 minute mile running right now but I'm totally out of shape. I haven't worked out since Thanksgiving due to a bad case of strep throat and then an upper respiratory infection but I'll start logging next Monday as soon as I get over this bad cold.

I've done sprints in about an hour twenty minutes in the past. My order of strength is:

1. Bike
2. Swim
3. Run

I've had numerous running-related injuries (exertional compartment syndrome requiring surgery 8 years ago, plantar fasciitis off and on, shin splints when trying to train for a marathon 6 years ago, and arthritis in both knees). I know, way too young to have all that but 15 years of both volleyball and soccer has taken it's toll! I played volleyball competitively in college and until I was 29 on a competitive women's team, then gave it up for grad school and family commitments.

I went through quite a bit trying to balance nutrition, with hydration and necessary mineral intake etc.  When I switched over to IM training last year, everything became even more crucial.    I used a few weeks in the early spring to "test" run on nutrition with very specific caloric intake.

Using the 250 kcal/hr. baseline, I found myself "searching" for energy after a few hours.  (I started with this on the bike)... I focused primarily on "energy" vs. what worked what didn't (although I did get lucky).  Being a "big guy" at 6'4" I knew I needed to bump up... I went up about 10 cal/hr each time and eventually found my "sweet spot" for IM pace at around 310 kcal / hr.

What I did find is that the root cause of my GI issues was a combination of too many calories and too little hydration.  It was pretty difficult to keep the two balanced, so I went to a complete liquid custom blend nutrition plan that works for me with 300 kcal / serving... easy to calculate, 1 bottle / hr (fill my downtube bottle with 3x concentrate, fill the aerobottle with 1/3 of the bottle and the rest with water)...

I did this very precisely at IMoo and for the first time ever, I didn't feel sick once!!!  It was a joy of a race.... next time... FASTER!!!

That probably leaves you with a ton of questions which is great!  Let me know, that is what worked for me...

Robb

David,

The race in Novi was at Island Lake...it was a small lake surrounded by a neighborhood, which was really beautiful.  I was very surprised to see there was very little seaweed when I swam it, but I do not doubt that happening.  This race was GREAT for first timers because they had a couple practices of the bike and run beforehand.  Also, they marked the water VERY well; I was worried about getting off track too, but they made it relatively easy.  The race setup and organization was very impressive.  I know for sure I am going to do that one again next year.  As far as other races, I am not sure yet.  Do you know of any good Olympic distance races in OH?  I found one here in Detroit at the end of June I believe.  But, I am going to need A LOT of training before I attempt a Oly distance...that is my goal for the summer though!! Happy New Year!

Jelly, I have been looking for this spreadsheet all over the place.  See, I am already benefiting from your blog.

I posted my race results on my initial page, basically mid-packer on sprints.  Today I had some nice weather and traded the trainer for some asphalt.  15 mi bike avg 21.5mph / 4 mi run avg 8:31 min pace.  This was my peak speed at 09 season and is where I want to build from - can't say it was easy keeping the pressure for 15 miles but doablenonetheless.

Back to my swimming - I can do it, and after a few sessions I can get strength for 1500 yds, however my goal for 2010 is a HIM so I need to be able to comfortable go over 2500 yds.  My lap time is avg 0:50 (50 yds).  I got access to a heated outdoor pool as well as a wetsuit and non-heated pool, both pools are 25 yds.  I used to swim/surf/enjoy w/o any form or technicalities, I think that's why I stopped liking.  Just ordered Swiming Immersion videos for XMas -should be arriving soon.  Based on my swim time I come to believe that my swim is still mid-packer allowing me to pass a lot of riders but then I blow a piston on the run.

Training - usually 2x bike and run (1 x swim during season).

Do you think you can help fine tune my racing?

Well, I worked on a training plan with Rumpass Oly in mind, but I have not fleshed it out in much detail yet.  My plan for the next two days was 40' run and 30' on the bike trainer and for tomorrow - 90' Master's swim and 60' strength class.  When I headed out for my run this morning I felt pretty sore and crappy from my last two days so I walked/jogged for about 45' and in the mean time my husband left home and locked me out.  Sooooo, I ended up walking/jogging for an extra hour and a half, trying to stay warm and pass the time until he got home.  No more time for the trainer today, but at least I got in a good calorie burn and some good stretching while I waited.  Tomorrow's Master's swim has been canceled, too, so tomorrow looks like bike trainer/strength class day.  It's hard to get a good weekly routine going this time of the year!
