How were the conditions of the road? Pot hole central? Not bad?

Haven't ridden this spring; have done a few runs in the park and the roads getting there weren't noticeably super bad. But that was only the main road the park was on up till about 4 miles past the main park entrance.

Just curious if anyone who has ridden the Black Bear course, has also ridden the Pinchot Oly course?  Pinchot isn't doing an Oly this year but I am familiar with that bike course and I was curious as to a comparison in terms of hills.

I plan on going up to Black Bear to ride at least once but I thought I would ask.

Hey Pec, I plan on coming up from MD with another rider to demo the course. I'll post when we settle on a time.

I want to ride too. Just have to put it into the schedule at some point. It will most likely be a Sunday in early May.

Nice!  I have a gentleman who lives very close to me who is scheduled to do the Sprint.  He and I will be heading up to ride the course sometime as well.

I live very close to Pinchot park and I ride that course for my training.  I'm not fast at all but I'm 215lbs and the course is very hilly.  My 18.5 mile ride has around 1100 feet of climbing.  I can't imagine Black Bear being much worse.

Anyone interested in a course ride Sunday May 2?  I have to be relatively close to Beltzville on Monday for work anyway and convinced my boss I need a hotel up there Sunday night.  It can't be too early, I've got a 3.5 hour drive and a race that morning.  But I think I can get out of there around 11, so 2:30 or 3 for a course ride anyone?  I know the time isn't optimal, but its the only time I'll be up that way before the race.  We'll have plenty of daylight and it'll be a warmer part of the day....

Oh, and I wouldn't want to hammer it, but will if the group wants.

I did my own little triathlon today.  I was slow, but definitely feel ready for the race!

That is fantastic Witty.  I've been sick since last Sunday so I'm miserable.  I looked at my training log about 10 times over the weekend, knowing I wasn't training.  It felt like a big report or project was coming due and I was intentionally avoiding it.  I'm hoping to shake this soon!  The only good news for me is that in the process of trying to build up milage to run a half-mary the week before Black Bear, I am a little more confident in my running.  I also feel good about the swim but I want more milage on the bike before I feel "ready."

It's all good I guess.  I'm not fast to begin with but I do want to PR in all three events.

I did the sprint 2 years ago and am coming back for the sprint this year. After reading the comments, I'm divided on whether to ride my tri bike or use my decent road bike. I've done 2 short hill rides on the tri bike . . . but for the life of me, I can't remember the Black Bear terrain.

I seem to recall it's similar to 1-2 sharp ascents in Fairmount Park for the ING Insurance Oly . . . ring any bells with folks?

I am in for Sunday's Oly.

After reading the comments about the hills, I started to get a bit nervous.  Where I ride is fairly hilly, so my everyday training rides I normally climb 700 - 1000 feet over a 20 - 30 mile course, on longer rides I've exceeded 2000 feet of climbing.  When I saw BB was only 900 feet I was releived.  All those worried must ride in the flatlands.  I curse the hills on my training rides around home, but I think I'll be thanking them next Sunday!

See you there!

So, please don't kill me.  I used mapmyride.com to map the course and get elevation info from it and posted the info here.  Long story short, some rides have made me skeptical of their elevation data, so I just plotted the course in BT...
http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/map.asp?routeid=129181 (if the link doesn't work, search Black Bear in the route manager).

The elevation is now 1883 ft vs the 900 before.  This makes a lot more sense too, 900 feet over 24 miles isn't really a big deal, more rolling, but 1800 will pack some punch.

Good question.
To be safe, I am going with long sleeves on the wetsuit.  I'm tired of being cold in the water and gasping for breath.

I used to never get cold but having lost 40lbs, I find that I get cold very easily.  I guess that layer of whale blubber was doing its job.

It inspired me!!!  After the first OWS I realized it was time to change wetsuits so I rented a full suit for this event.  Also, I lost 45lbs from last year so I had to drop a size.  My wetsuit was actually baggy in some spots and that's not normal!  lol

I'm not really worried about the water... any wetsuit should be warm enough regardless I think (I've done an the same October race in both sleeved and sleeveless and didn't notice too much of a difference).  Knowing me I'll be wrong though and be freezing.  I just HATE jumping on the bike wet and getting the wind and cold...thats where I start hating everyone and everything....

I'm bailing folks!  Tendonitis is too much to bear, and I don't want to make it worse.  I've offered to volunteer instead, I don't know in what capicity yet.  I'll keep you posted.

Any plans for a small BT Gathering post race or anything?
