Thoughts:

1. Ken I'm really glad you joined the group!
2. LP 2008 was the crazy rainy year, so I know you can tough out any conditions
3. Musselman is a race good friends of mine have done in the past and they LOVED it. It is well organized from what I've heard.
4. IMFL is a race I have an eye on in the future. It is attractive to me as it's later in the year and most of the training would be over the later summer/fall.
5. Ken, thanks for the kind words. I will try my best to be positive and provide helpful info. I'm honored that a former mentor would come join my group. Thanks

Fred

I was originally planning on IMLP for 2009, then I got sent to CA (where I am again this week) for a 2 month work project last spring.  It really put me behind on my bike and swimming.  So I dropped while there was still a refund available and signed up for Musselman.  I still wasn't ready from a biking stand point, but I live 15 miles so it was still a fun day.  But it is time to train properly and get a little revenge!  Which s why I chose FL to have plenty of time in between.

This is shaping up to be a great group! I am looking forward to learning from everyone!

ETA - You should do Musselman some year when you aren't doing IMLP, it is a well run race!

Fred - if you've room for 1 more I'd love to join - happy to post a bio later if I can. I've been doing Tri's since 2007 & I'm training for Timberman HIM this August. If you're maxed out, no worries I understand.

Best,
Simon

BIO: I have been involved with triathlons since 2008.  Before that, I had done some running, but always wanted to try a triathlon (even though I had never seen one).  Once I did my first (a sprint), I was hooked.  I have recently accepted a teaching job, so for the first time in 6-7 years, I am actually home in the evening (I had been working and going to school full-time), which had really helped my training   I have tried a sprint and an olympic, but I just feel like I want to go longer  This year, I will try my first HIM, with the ultimate goal being IM Canada in another couple of years.

FAMILY STATUS: married with 2 kids (daughter will be 2 in June and son will be 4 in May).

CURRENT TRAINING: I train about 7-10 hours/week right now, but plan on increasing that very soon.  This month, I really want to get my running numbers up, since I have never put in more than 47 miles in a month.  Last year's mileage was only about 174 miles, and I really want to step it up this year.  I have yet to finish a race thinking that I did as well as I could have done, and I hope to finally do it this year.

PRIOR RACES: 1 sprint, 1 olympic, 1 marathon, 2 1/2 marathons, 1 10k, 2 5k... until this year, I had never repeated a race distance.  So far this year, I have done my 2nd 1/2 mary (as a pace bunny) and my 2nd 5k (I was sick).  I look forward to repeating some race distances this year to see some improvement.

WEIGHT LOSS GOALS: I hit 200lbs at Christmas, and am now down to about 184lbs.  I would like to get down to 165-170, but have been hovering right around 180 for a while now.  I am hoping that as I increase my training, the pounds will start to come off again.

I really look forward to getting some training advice and hearing how everyone's training is going.  My HIM is at the end of August, so I still have some time to get ready, but I want to try to do at least 1 sprint and 1 olympic before then.

Kath2163 - 2010-04-07 8:25 AM Hi Pete,
Yep, it is the Platte River race.  Good luck this weekend. I don't feel ready for this race but as long as I finish under the time limit I will be ok with that (well maybe not as I finished a half marathon in January so I have something to compare it to in terms of times).
Have you done the Boulder series before?  I hear the Boulder Peak course has a huge climb in it.

The great thing about the Platte half is that it's all slightly downhill, but not steep enough to really hurt your knees like the first 2 miles of the Red Rocks 5k.  If you just did a half in January and have at least been in maintenance mode for running since then (can't see your logs yet), then I'm sure you'll do well in this race.  If you get your bib number on Saturday before the race, then send me a PM and let me know.  I'll see if I can find you during or after the race.

As for the Boulder series... I haven't done it.  I did Harvest Moon last year and a few others with WithoutLimits so I'd feel comfortable in Aurora Res.  As for the Boulder Peak, I've ridden parts of the course during other longer rides.  Lee Hill to Olde Stage Rd is the climb you heard about I'm sure.  The good thing about it is it's basically the first thing you get to on the bike and it's all over within about 6 miles.  You get a 4.5mile approach at about 2-3% grade (about 450ft of climbing) as it then just gets steeper over the next 1.5 mile hitting about an 8% grade.  So if you conserve a little the first 4.5 miles, then just get over that next 1.5 miles you get rewarded with an awesome 5% downgrade to rest on right after.  Plus, that downhill continues for about 15 miles before you'll see another uphill.  I'll definitely be out there riding the course a few times before the race.

Track workout on tap for me tonight with my training group. Not sure specifically what the workout will be, but guaranteed it's going to hurt. Smile I just started doing track a few months ago and am still not a fan of the pain that comes with speed work.

Dang!  I'd love to be in this group, if you have room for one more.....let me know, and I'll do the bio.

I started the whole tri thing about 19 months ago.  Did IMMoo last year, will do IMCdA this year.  Still looking for and needing lots of advice!!

Fred, my experience as a mentor is it depends on the make up of the group.  An active (asks a lot of questions, lots of posts) large group can be easier than a quiet small group.  My first group I kept quite small on purpose, but it was a great group of folks (including Sara) that made the job easy, could have easily doubled of like minded people.  My second (current) group I initially started with 13, but some signed up for the program and never logged on again.  We even opened back up again to get back over 10.  This was a mixed group of absolute beginners as well as some experienced athletes in triathlon or other sports.  At times the current group is more work because I try to keep the conversation going and keep them engaged.  Other times, it just goes on with or without me.

The group you have put together here I am guessing will all stay involved because there aren't any "newbies".  I am guessing it will be frequent posts and in depth discussions which could keep you busy.  On the other hand, there is some experience with the group so you may not have to be the only resource.

Either way, you are starting to push the limits.

Name: Dylan

BIO:  I started doing triathlons at the end of 2008. After the first sprint I was hooked…and knew I wanted to get to Ironman distance races. 2009 was a prep year for me…growing to 70.3 distance…with my eyes set on ironman in 2010. I am an Environmental Scientist so my job often requires me to be outside…which helps keep me active.

Family: I am an east coaster (NY) that moved out to California in December 2009 for a really great job. Im living in Monterey, Ca and the area is great for tri training. Being single I tend to have a lot more free time (and $) for training/racing. My roommate, who has become like a father to me, is a fantastic cyclist and former triathlete…so its nice to get some great help from someone so close to me.

Current Training: I am closely following the BT Beginner IM plan…so it is ramping up pretty quickly.

Prior Races: 2008-All sprints

2009: 70.3 New Orleans and 70.3 Providence, Fredrick Maryland ½ Mary.

Planed Races: 1 HIM (Wildflower), 1 IM (Lake Placid). Thinking about another HIM (Big Kahuna) and maybe a marathon at the end of the year (depending on how Lake Placid goes).

I have never been in a mentor group before, but am excited to be in this one! I don’t think I have a problem with motivation or finding the time to train, I tend to ? myself a lot…and not know when to rest and recover vs. pushing through pain/soreness/tiredness. I also tend to overdo it…try too much too quickly…so I think having a support group and following a plan closely will help me greatly. I also think it will be nice to have a group that I can help motivate and maybe offer some advice for people doing their first HIM….bc that was me last year.

I'm fine with 14 but I'll defer to the more experienced mentor people.

I'm new to the mentor group thing, but am addicted to BT and on it daily for the forums and to update my training log, so I know I'll be active.  Fred, I say go with what you are comfortable with. We know it's a time commitment on your part and I would hope we all understand that you have to balance your own daily life, training, and mentoring.  Excluding people is sadly something that is going to have to happen at some point, what was your original intention for the size to begin with?  If you're comfortable with a few more, then that really is your choice.  Based on everyone's bios and that most are familiar with tri basics; I'd think the discussions will become more advanced than the simple things like: "Should I buy a race belt?" or "should I buy a sleeveless or full wetsuit"
