For anyone interested, the scientology crusade against Ritalin is covered somewhat in this PBS Frontline documentary from 2001:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/medicating/watch/

The children's stories are kind of sad though, so be warned.

Well, I do agree our society is over medicated.
I teach part time in college, 1/3 of my freshman class was taking prescription drugs (heavy stuff anti depresants and all)...
Guess what? They are the product from the Ritalin boom in the 80's.
Kids are growing up on a multimedia society that expect too much too soon. No time to concentrate. No respect to elders. Instant gratification. Videogames. Multi information screens. Our education system stayed the same, teachers face overcrowded schools. Parents have to work full time leaving little time and patience to raise kids. Single parent homes are nowdays the rule not the exception.... Food is loaded with growth hormones, additives, and sugar. What are we doing?
I am not sure were all this ADD thing comes from but there has to be more than drugs. Multidiscipline approach is needed, get to the root of the problem.
But preaching religious intolerance is not the way either.
Some people really need the drugs but I am afraid that our society settle for the magic happy pill instead of addressing the real issues.

I don't need to read the story. Tom Cruise said it's evil so it must be so!

I do know of 2 anecdotal stories where teachers suggested that the child (2 different kids) be tested for ADHD. Teachers are not qualified to make this determination! Both kids (I know them both very well) are strong-willed and verbal; they do not have learning problems. In one case, the child was simply moved to another school by her parents and she thrived in this non-parochial setting.

My sister teaches autistic and severely emotionally handicapped children. She told me there is a rigorous process in Florida public schools which is supposed to be followed before any teacher talks to the parent about ADHD and testing the child. Evidently, this is not always done.

Fewer students per teacher (and, NO, eliminating teachers aides is not the way to accomplish this!) would certainly make it easier for the teacher to give more individualized attention.

courtney_leone - 2005-06-27 4:52 PM  even though I'm sick of him, I still want to see his damn movie.

On the news yesterday, the reporter asked the movie critic if Tom's latest, uh, eccentricities would help or hurt his movie's opening day. The reviewer said no. I have to agree. He may be a flake, but he is a competent actor. Spielberg is a terrific director, and H.G. Wells was a masterful writer who basically invented sci-fi. Yeah, I'll go see the movie.

Cruise is a either going through a mid life crisis, or having a nervous breakdown. I have lost alot of respect for him and I surely won't be supporting his payroll at the video store anymore.

ok, serious hearsay, BUT......

I have a friend who used to work for a company that places household help (butlars, personal assistants, private chefs) with the rich and famous.  They reserve the right not to send staff to households where the people were impossible to work for.   Tom, once he and Nicole split, was on the list of "impossible" bosses........

LOL! Not surprised....I used to clean houses for some very rich and often famous folks in Aspen. Only one "impossible to work for" house, but lots of weirdos....

Hehehehehehehehe....

http://www.petitiononline.com/Tomkat/

Dear Mr. Spielberg,

We, the undersigned, wish to inform you that we are compelled to boycott your movie “War of the Worlds”. Our decision is based solely on the abhorrent behavior of Mr. Tom Cruise. We will not be spending our good money to support the ridiculous and potentially dangerous antics of this raving narcissist. Mr. Cruise’s actions and comments have been offensive and insulting when not downright laughable.

-We do not want to hear Mr. Cruise’s uneducated and unsubstantiated opinions on medicine and Psychiatry. His mean-spirited decision to use Brooke Shields as an example was unforgivable. The potential impact on those in need of treatment, who might heed the advice of a ‘celebrity’ over a trained professional, is dangerous. If Mr. Cruise believes that vitamins can cure mental illness, then perhaps he should consider increasing his dosage.

-We do not want to be enlightened about Mr. Cruise's ‘religion’ of Scientology. If he is so concerned about mind control, he should not be part of an organization that seems to use this tactic as its Modus Operandi. Mr. Spielberg, was the fully staffed Scientology tent you allowed Mr. Cruise to have on the movie set placed right next to the Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, and Muslim tents? Didn’t think so.

-We are sick of being force-fed his relationship with Katie Holmes which, if it isn’t the publicity hoax it appears to be, is a pathetic, juvenile, attention mongering display. Tom’s obvious control of his Stepford-Wife-To-Be is frightening.

-We do not want to watch his ‘out of control’ yet suspiciously manipulative antics nor listen to his condescending, holier-than-thou judgments. This man cannot even articulate a coherent sentence. He should stick to reading movie scripts.

It is revealing that the most compelling character Tom Cruise has ever portrayed is “Frank TJ Mackay” from Magnolia, a control-freak with a pathological need to assert his obsession over not just those around him, but the public as well, by exploiting his access to public media. Apparently Mr. Cruise was playing himself.

Perhaps he views the aliens he battles in War of the worlds as a metaphor for the aliens he and his Scientology friends believe inhabit we humans. Relax Tom, it’s just a movie. A movie we will not be paying to see.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

My kids go to private school, and one of C's classmates parents were told that "X will not be welcome back at (this school) next year unless he is medicated for behavior problems".  They put him in public school, unmedicated, and is doing well.

Guess it was just the environment.

I agree that many kids are on medication that should be just forced to go outside and play and not given crap to eat.  I also belive that there are children who need meds.  I work with emotionally disturbed/psychologically fragile/behaviorally disturbed kids.  Tell Tom that he can come to work with me and he can talk to some paranoid schizopehrenic kids about life *without* meds.  Or talk to the parents of a 6 year old girl who is psychotic and is OCD.  Tom Cruise, as cute as he *used* to be, should shut the frig up.

Okay, there I said it!  I fell better now......

I went to War of the Worlds tonight. Tom Cruise may be an ass, but it is a GREAT movie. And he's not an arrogant anything, at least, not once it gets going. AND he's not after any girls - except his daughter.

It is an excellent adaptation of one of the best sci fi books ever written.

Tom Cruise on not using drugs for psychiatric purposes - he's a dork.

Tom Cruise in his personal life - total dork.

Tom Cruise on Ritalin - sorry, have to agree with him, I think we WAY overmedicate children with this drug when what they need is some discipline from their parents, and some time not spent in front of the TV.  However, I think there are kids who really do need it, just not as many as are on it.  - mostly not dorky.

Tom Cruise on the cuteness meter - Way Cute.

Tom Cruise on the tallness meter - Way Too Short.

Tom Cruise as an actor - I've liked most of his movies.

As a question, do you go around checking the politics/beliefs systems of all actors to see if they agree with yours before going to see their movies?  I think if that were the case, most of us wouldn't go see very many movies.
