I hope everyone had a great time today. I saw LOTS of flat tires out on the bike course today and heard that care flight had to be called in to transport a rider to the hospital. The lake was a little rougher than I thought it would be, but overall a good swim, bike, and run time for me!

Organizers did a great job, again.

I also saw a lot of flats. Not sure why. (Overinflation in the heat, perhaps?)

Too bad that the excellent cold showers weren't on today (they were Saturday). But I doubt that's the RD's fault.

And the shirts are so ugly they're awesome.

Bad racing day for me, but I guess that happens.

Anyone know why the swim splits were given in such an odd format?

It was a hot one for sure. I think it was hotter than last year. I did notice a lot of flats out there as well. Probably had to do with the heat and the wonderful chip seal.

I too noticed all the flats but I road most of the course on a smooth surface so I personally didn't have a problem. The water seamed more choppy than in May for Texas Man and this swim course seamed to be exact distance instead of the normal short swim. Also I was looking at run times and I didn't have my pedometer with me but seamed a bit long. Be curious if anyone got the distance.

The swim did seem longer this year and the water was definitely choppy.I was one of the people who got a flat. I don't know what happened since the course was definitely better this year and the shoulders had smooth sections for the most part. There was no damage to the tire, but it caused me to DNF the race. It sux, but I will live to fight another day.

My Garmin put the run at 6.16, but that may be a touch off given the amount of tree cover involved.  I still don't think the run was long though, it wasn't off by over 1/10th a mile.

My Garmin had 6.16 as well. The swim was too long, I did Texas Man in 22:14 and this one in 27:37. I know the wetsuit makes you faster but never that much, also there was a sand bank (?) on the first part of the swim (southbound) that every body had to run through.

Just did a quick comparison of results for this year and last. In my division (M35-39) here are the swim times of the top 5 guys (overall)

20102009
26:0820:17
26:0323:07
29:4923:09
23:4923:37
31:0627:23

Looks very likely to me that the course was longer this year.

To be fair, Tom did warn all of us about it and told us how to avoid it.  We just all took the most direct way to the buoy instead of swimming 5 yards to the right & ended up going over the bar.

Good to hear. Makes me feel a little better about my swim time compared to last year. I was 4 minutes slower this year, but thought I was in better swim shape than last year.

Even with those conditions, I'd say I had a bad swim. Felt bad the whole time, got hit a lot, etc. But, yes... a small comfort to know it wasn't ALL me having a bad day.

I do wonder why year was correct distance, however.

And while I'm thinking of things.... are those huge, bulky disposable timing chips standard for races in Texas now? Why so huge?

hum maybe I was just out of shape for that run. Seamed like when I looked at the times compared to last year though they were all way slower. Oh well guess its time to start working hard.

That's the first time I've seen them at a race.

yeah it's looking like most of the races are going w/ the new disposable chips (similar to those used in marathons and 5k/10ks).
i just use my old timing chip 'anklet' and put the orange chip on it.  but i agree they are wayy bigger than they need to be. you can always shave down some of the plastic if you're like me and always trim your race numbers.

my Disco thoughts:

Bike: i HATE those roads. all i could think about was this year's stage 3 of the TdF, the cobblestone stage. i ended up getting TWO flats. thankfully the Bicycles Plus van was roaming the course and they hooked me up w/ a free tube so i could finish. although i lost a good 35 minutes between the 2 flats and all of the walking. i also got nervous/worried because i spilt all the water outta my aero drink when changing my flats. so i ended up getting a WARRRM bottle of water from one of the policeman who had it in his trunk lol. but it was better than nothing. i also picked up a water bottle that someone else dropped but it only had a small amount of warm water left in it. i was just glad i was able to finish.

Swim: that swim was CRAZY choppy compared to TexasMan a few months ago. BUT, at least it was the full distance and not short. i could instantly tell that the buoys were further out than they were in TexasMan. and it was annoying that they moved the buoys sooo far left for this race. for TexasMan the buoys were more to the right and i only saw 5-10 people who found the "sand" bar and walked it. but you all know that is wasn't a sand bar, it was a ROCK bar. that thing was painful.

Run: same exact course as TexasMan, my watch read under 6.2mi as well (6.17mi (pedometer not GPS)). I was exstatic to see that they added powerade to more of the water stations. at TexasMan they only had powerade at the 3.1mi turnaround. and the ice cups and cold towels were amazing as well.

overall the race organizer is getting better. most of my old complaints have been addressed: incorrectly advertised distances, crappy water stations, etc.

Also worth noting: The photography company they hire is excellent. Very expensive, as they all are, but the shots at least make me consider it.

If I ever hear the word, "porn" said over the loud speaker again, I will never race another Dallas Athletes race. Period. I have a two-year-old that comes to watch her mommy race and there were a ton of other kids there. Talking about the guys warming up the water before the women race was just uncalled for as well.

I'm not a prude, but I'm a mommy first - then a triathlete. Races should be family-friendly.

It was before the first wave of the men's olympic wave. Something about a porn collection and then continued with more questionable content. I was on my way over to find the announcer (Dan Jones?) when I ran into a friend who was also racing. Just stick to motivational talk.. not locker room talk.
