Veteran 262 Clarksvile | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread You know it's funny I was feeling tight prior to starting training and now that I am back on a tri-training regiment I feel much better. It's really weird my body over the past few weeks has been feeling tight during my off-season (1 month) although I was weight training with a little stretching. I don’t feel as tight any more maybe a little soar (the good kind) so as of now on day 3 training is looking good. I’ve gone high tech and bought the new Timex Global Trainer. I am having issues with the HR, but I think it was because of the HR strap was not tight enough around my chest. I am really looking fwd to using it because it has lots of tools to help in training. |

Extreme Veteran 488 Phoenix | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread I start training on Monday. I just finished a half marathon and finally broke 2 hours (a goal I've been trying to reach for a while). Now that I have that out of my system, I can focus on Oceanside! |

Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread Tomorrow is day 1...of my off season! Not sure how long that will be, but I need a break. Clearwater today - I was sooo not ready for that. Got my rear end handed to me. Bike was ok, but the swim and run? Not so much. Carlsbad Marathon in Jan, so I'll have to get after it sooner or later. |

I may need to up the calories a little next week but I’ll wait to see if I lose 4 pounds again this week before I do. My goal is 2 pounds a week. Only18 more to go hope everyone else is doing well on their workouts and weight goals. |

Extreme Veteran 557 Woodland Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread Half way through DAY 1. Was out on the bike in the cold this morning and will head to the pool after work. I don't think I've lost any weight yet. Reminds me that I should weight myself to start off my plan though. 18 to go? 18lbs? At the start of my plan, my goal is currently to qualify for Vegas. I'm going to go balls to the wall and the key for me will be to get off the bike and run the 13.1 as if it were the only thing I had to do that day. My last Ironman plan didn't include bricks, but for this Half plan I will be back to doing one brick a week. |

I'm just using this as a warm up for Ironman Coeur d'Alene. Although I’m excited to finally race at sea level. As long as I get my nutrition correct and don’t have stomach problems again I think I’ll have a new PR. My body’s not going to know what to do coming from 6000+ft to sea level. I think I’ll be on oxygen high. Anyways Good luck! And yes 18 pounds to go. |

Extreme Veteran 557 Woodland Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread Speaking of... What is everyone thinking for nutrition? I'm going to start experimenting with liquid calories via infinit, perpetuem, sustained engery, and carbopro1200. I've never used any of them, but think that liquid will be the way to go instead of a solid powerbar. |

Currently I’m going to explore with perpetuem, and a couple other type of fuel sources (can’t remember the actual names) the nutritionist I’ve been seeing is recommending. All I want to do is figure out what is causing my stomach issues on long races. I think one issue for me is putting in too many calories. Over the next few months I hope to crack the code on my fuel needs. |

Extreme Veteran 557 Woodland Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread Did the first brick of my plan today! 21+mph on the bike for 50 minutes, then negative split for just under three miles averaging out to 6:15s. I forgot how fun bricks were. It's like getting to race every week! This weekend looks pretty relaxed. My base training lasts for 8 weeks before I start my build phase. |

I've never used any of them, but think that liquid will be the way to go instead of a solid powerbar. I'm not crazy about Carbo-Pro 1200 (it's kind of like cough syrup), but I really like the powder. I put a couple of scoops in my bottles w/Powerade Zero. Tastes pretty good and it doesn't have any HFCS (I think I've identified G as the source of some GI distress). I also pack a plastic baggie with Shot Bloks and salt tabs in my Bento. Towards the end of the bike, I put the baggie, with whatever is left, in my singlet and then grab a handheld bottle (same mix) before heading out of T2. The only thing I take from the run aid stations is water. Ran a couple of days this week (felt ok - not great), but skipped AM spin class. Planning to run a slow 15 tomorrow to catch up with Carlsbad Marathon training. Unless it rains. Have a great weekend everyone! |

I hear ya. Although it's not as cold as other parts of the country I think cold is a relative term. I'm doing trainer workouts during the week and only hitting the roads for the weekend ride. I could not stand to be on the trainer for longer than 45 minutes at first, but now I'm ok with a 1.5-2hr ride. |

Extreme Veteran 557 Woodland Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread I can only stand them for 1.5 maybe 2 hours. I know people that have done 6 hour trainer rides though. I think the longest I've done this season is 1:15. I'm definitely riding outside as much as possible. California won't get snow, but we'll have some rainy days and chilly mornings. Sucks having to use an outdoor pool year round as well, but thats only bad for the amount of time it takes to get from the showers to the pool. I did a half iron distance ride this weekend and tried a route that kind of mimics oceanside. It went pretty well and I think it will be a good route to continue riding on to dial in nutrition and work on hills on the back half. I took a week and a half off of running to rest my IT Band and am just getting back into it now. Glad to get the injuries and resting out of the way early on instead of during build phase. I'm going to keep babying it a bit through training though. |

That's about all I did for my 70.3 last month and I took more than 10 minutes off my previous best best bike split. I'm sure some of the early season IM training carried over (and it wasn't a difficult course), but for the months of September and October, all I really did on the bike was spin. I'm a believer! |

I'm a believer! halfironmike...interesting you brought this up as I have been contemplating adding one or two spin classes to my current weekly schedule. Problem is the spin classes readily available to me are only 45 mins long. With a 3-5 min warmup and a 3-5 min cool down it's only like a 35 min workout. Maybe I'll add an extra trainer ride or two. I want a better run than the one I shuffled through during my first HIM and I know the bike leg dictates the run. |

Extreme Veteran 557 Woodland Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread Spin class sounds like a good option for keeping motivated through winter cycling. I don't really like working out with groups of people though and I treat my training plans as bibles, so I don't think spinning would work for me. I don't follow custom plans, but the ones I find I follow with very few modifications so unless the plan said go to spin class I would feel like I was off my path. |

Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread Finally think I am over my hip injury (knock on wood). Running is my weak leg, no pun intended, and I just came back to 3 X 20-25 minute runs last week, intend on upping the long run a bit every week, but it's gonna be close. Figure I'll get to around 11 -12 miles for a long run. For the bike, I am doing Jorge's winter program 3X week on the CT, long rides outside. |
