I'm actually trying to stay on top of this thing...I was looking at the hotel sites for reservations but all of the cedar point hotels won't pull up any quotes. Anyone else had problems? maybe it's just down today.

Not sure whether you'll find  the information  online.  I called the hotel to make my reservation (The Breakers).  I was able to get a single room with 2xqueen beds for 157 (including taxes and fees) per night.  Just make sure to tell them you're  part of the triathlon.

To all who raced CP and have also raced an Ironman event, please tell my how the two compare?  I raced IMFL in 2008 and loved it, but CP is in the right time frame for me and it looks like  good event.

I just got 3 nights (2 Queens) @ Breakers for 351. It really is not as expensive as I thought it would be.

Hotel Breakers--which is the one right at the swim start.

Those of you traveling with kiddos--Breakers seemed to be the only one with an indoor pool (others have outdoors but will be closed when it comes time for the race. I think it will be a god-send for my husband being so close to everything and having the pool with having to take care of the kids.

Can anybody offer any insights into the swim portion of the course.  Is the swim more like an ocean swim or is it pretty flat?  I have no experience with the great lakes.  Further, am I correct in my assumption that it is a massed start?

Yes, this is a mass start.  This last year, it was around 400 of us all going at the same time - pretty much mass confusion!

The Great Lakes are very unpredictable and nothing like the ocean.  The waves often come from  different directions and the surf can  kick up in the blink  of an eye.  Lake Erie is so shallow that all it takes is a little wind to stir it up.

That said, with Cedar Point being on a peninsula, there's the option of having the swim on either side depending on where the wind is coming from and how much  surf there is.  Last year, it was on the  lake side.  The beginning was fairly calm, except for the flailing arms and legs.  The route is shaped like a block  M with each half being 1.2 miles and a short beach run in between.  The second part has a lot choppier than the first.  As I was going out, the waves were in my face and I was thinking that  that would be fine because I'd be able to pretty much body surf the way back.....Not.  The waves were also in my face on the way back.

It was still a nice swim, though - they had plenty of buoys to site on and lots of kayakers and jet skis to make sure no one got off course.

Hornet - 2011-01-06 2:58 PM Whats the bike course like? I heard flat but windy?

Flat is relative.  Its hillier than I thought it was going to be, but not nearly as bad as the area around Milford, MI that I'm used to.  Going into the town of Milan there's a killer hill that'll have you standing up, especially on the second lap.

The wind can  be pretty bad across the open corn fields.  I found out later that the winds were up to about 22mph, which explains why at times I was only moving at about 13mph!

The thing that killed me, though, wasn't the wind or hills, but the chip seal that the county had just put down about 2-4 weeks before the race.  Some of those roads had had enough auto traffic to smooth them out a bit, but most of them were really rough.  If you've never ridden on fresh chip seal, its a layer of adhesive that they spread gravel on.  If I'd just been  doing the HIM it probably wouldn't have bothered me as much, but after 112 miles, all the vibrations riding over that stuff caused a type of pain in my body that I'd never before experienced.  This year, though, that shouldn't be an issue.  Those roads should have enough traffic on them to be smoothed out.

Coop is right with flat being relative.  Rev3 did a great job finding some hills in a very flat area.  The chip seal shouldn't be an issue next year.  The course starts out flat and then throws in some nice hills in the middle.  Nothing killer, just some hills.  The longest stretch is about 15 miles on rte 113 and is a false flat for 10 miles of it then it levels off.

The wind will always make this bike course tough.  It started to pick up on the second loop for me and beat me up for awhile.

Keep looking on this forum for the Cleveland Tri Club preview days.  We will do one in July and one in August.  Hopefully, with the same help from Rev3, right Eric and Charlie??????

The course preview days for Rev3 Cedar Point will be July 23 and August 20.  We will have a swim clinic, bike ride of about 50 or 100 miles on the actual Cedar Point Course, and a short run course.

Last year, we had approximately 120- 150 people at both days.  They were great!

More details to follow as the dates get closer!

Less than 30 weeks to go!

Is anyone else following the Be Iron Fit plan? I am doing a mixture of the plans - Just finish with the swim and run, and the competitive bike. Wish I could do competitive run, but I am finally making a comeback from PF and don't want to jinx it

What other training plans are you following?

I'm thinking about CP for my first full. I grew up in Cleveland so this would be a sentimental homecoming.  The bike course looks flat (relative term I know) and I like that.

I did Quassy last year - awesome organization and a first-class event, so I know Rev3 puts on a good show.

Ben - great to meet you last year @ Timberman and glad to see you are in for this race!

Thanks, I'm super excited. Training has started in earnest, and we're doing Patriot half in June as our stepping stone race.

I signed up to do this race through Rev3's charity program. Their charity is The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. My wife lost a 19 year old cousin last year to abdominal cancer, so i figured it was a good thing to shoot for.

I just posted a raffle on my blog today, $600 triathlon prize package (wetsuit, helmet, h20 audio stuff, and a $199 apple gift card) plus I'll be adding more as I finish working with the sponsors. $10 per entry. ends 3/15.
