Hey all!

How did the races go today for those who had them?

My first of the season is a 5K on Feb 5th.  It'll actually be my first open 5K with chip timing.  My first one (last year) was timed by a chick with a stopwatch...so I'm not sure how accurate it was!  I'm really looking forward to it.  I hope it's cold and rainy.  The worse the weather, the better I do (to a point, of course)!

Hey everybody! Got back from my Y swim class a little while ago. It involved a discussion about peeing in wetsuits. AWESOME.

Catherine, is PNW Pacific North West? That means the likelihood of snow/ice for your race is minimal, right? Very nice. I'm signed up for a 5k March 6. It's my PR course from last year. It's ridiculously hilly but a really fun early spring race, so I keep doing it.

I've been breathtakingly lazy ever since winter started here, and another foot of snow this week DID NOT HELP. Has anyone seen my mojo? Anyway, I'm going to drag myself back to the Y tomorrow (3 day weekend) and hopefully visit the spin bike, the treadmill, and some weights. Wish me luck!

Well, for my first hail mary (i mean half mary) I wanted to go under 2:30, 2:15 was a realistic goal.  2:09 and change!  Gotta shower change and head for drinks (more!) then key west, race details to follow at some point!

Fantastic, Lee!!  Congrats!

Katie - yes, I'm out in the country west of Portland, OR...so snow and ice are rare.  Chances are good that  Feb 5 will be wet and about 40F (typical).   Works for me!  (I'm completely useless in the heat though...I wilt).

I need my mojo back too.  I don't even have snow as an excuse.  I'm getting there though...slowly.  Today I've got a 4 mile run and some weight training on the plan.

Hi Katy.  Welcome to the group.  You have some fortitude to stick to it through all that.

Shinsplints suck.  I have a posterior tib shin splint on my right leg I'm going to leave to someone in my will.  Slow and steady rebuilding that run.

Great race Lee!

LaughingSmileLaughing

I was just looking at wetsuits on the Xterra website. They seem to be one of the only companies that would fit me, unless I want to wear men's. QUESTION: sleeveless or long sleeve? I don't anticipate being in really, REALLY cold water races (at least not this year) and the sleeveless are so much cheaper. Is the buoyancy gain really worth it? I've never worn one so I have no idea...

Katie, I wear a sleeveless....but I live in VA and have very few races where I need the wetsuit.  It really is a matter of preference.  I find the sleeveless less constrictive.  Are you able to go to a tri shop and try any on or is this an on line purchase?

So what's everyone up to today?  I'm off from work for MLK Day...but I'm not sure everyone else enjoys that same luxury...

Off to a slow start this morning.  I slept much longer/later than I normally would (came too around 7:30).  I'm going to do a short warm up on the trainer as a prelude to strength work.  Need to keep working on those 2011 goals, you know?

Hope everyone that has one is enjoying the extra day off... I spent part of mine on a spin bike and a treadmill, good times!

Queen - I was thinking about Xterra because their prices are so much better and apparently they only sell online, unless you happen to be in San Diego (I think it was SD; I'm on the east cost so who cares!) Probably I'll rent from them (they UPS it to you for $50 10 days before race day) and keep it if I like it (only $50 more! Sweet!)

I'm going to try to focus on spending more time on the (YMCA spin) bike this week. It's been neglected and my quads are weak, or so the PT's tell me.

I have as Xterra sleeveless, Katie.  LOve it.

Skipped the run cause my legs are not 100% recovered post long azz ride yesterday and I need to talk to my in person PT tomorrow anyway Tongue out

I took my almost 17 year old out driving.  She really does okay most of the time, but it can be a lesson in patience too!!

I'm using an Xterra vortex 2 full suit.  I've been using it for 3+ years and love it.

Today I did my first road run since the injury and felt pretty good.  We're half a day ahead so I'm already back to work.  Enjoy the rest of you day off.

I'm in, thanks for the invite Judi.

Name:
Jessica

2011 season goals:
My goals this season are to maintain consistent training through graduate school. I'm in school 6-7 hours a day and will have teaching responsibilities 1-7 hours some days. I'm trying to stay healthy and use training and racing to keep me sane this school year. I'm considering a few early season races but would like to focus on Barb's Race HIM as my A race. I would love to go sub 6 hours but I'm not sure that is going to happen with my school commitments this year.

Realistic goals:
1. Stay healthy
2. Run 3-4 times a week
3. Swim 2 times a week
4. Get to the beach to run every now and then after classes.

Weight loss:
I dropped 25 pounds five years ago and have kept it off. Presently I'm working on getting my body fat down and dropping some weight. I'd like to drop 10 or 15 pounds but my current body fat is 23.5% and 15 lbs may result in some muscle loss. Honestly my goal is to eat better. My husband was just diagnosed as a diabetic so the diet has cleaned up a tad which should help.

Experience: This is my fourth season of triathlon and sixth season as a runner. I've done several sprints, 4 olympic / international distance, 4 HIM and one IM. As a runner I've done a number of 5k, 10k and half marathon distance races and a couple of trail runs. I took up triathlon after being sidelined from running for 6 months due to an overuse injury and improper training. I've had to start back at square one and understand the frustration associated with injury.

Welcome Jessica.  Isn't grad school just great!  I spent the weekend trying to find time to train, hang with the family, and write a loooong paper as my first assingment for the new semester.  Fabulous!  Do I really need 10 references?  Really? 10?

Wow ... this was my whole first semester in a nutshell. Yes ... the reference lists got a little crazy.

I'm glad to be part of the group and look forward to supporting and training together even if it's in the virtual world.

I see that Judi is playing good cop in this mentor group. She was my mentor in 2009 while I trained for Ironman and I thought I'd hop on board again.

Nice pic Lee.  Nothing better than sunshine, running, and friends!

Well folks, I'll be incognito for the next three days or so.  Heading up to San Francisco for work.  taking my running gear and yoga mat so I'll be prepared for all opportunities.  Be back Thursday pm.

Happy training everyone!
