Hello John,
My name is David, I would like to join your group.  I have done several sprints and olympic distances.  Did the Patriot Half Iron last year, I did it in under 6, but died on the run.  I am a 40yr old married male with 3 kids ages 5 to 12.  I get up at 4:30 am to be at the gym by 5:00am.  On most days I work out on my lunch break and sometimes in the afternnon.  My goals for this year are several local tri events, half and a full marathon, and another half ironman in the fall.  I would like to work my way up to a full ironman in 2012.

Welcome to the group, David!

I know all about early am wake-up calls to get workouts done with busy family & work schedules.  Is the Patriot Half the one in Freetown, MA?  My in-laws live in Dartmouth and the non-mDot iron distance race I did was up in Plymouth, MA 2 years ago.

Sorry.  Didn't even think about it when you asked about the HIM (group wasn't actually live back then).  But, c'mon in!

I don't have an exact count, but it looks like I may need to close up soon.  Last chance for any other stragglers!

Name: Jon

Story: I am 34 years old. I am a teacher/coach at a high school in Oklahoma. I coach Cross Country in the fall and Track in the spring. This gives me an excellent chance to get in my running. I live 20 min away from the pool I use so my swim workouts are not as frequent as me running.

Family Status: I have been married for 13 years this comming March to an awesome woman. We have two children. Laurel (11) and Jaxson (8). Both are highly active in sports even at a young age so most of my time is spent at either my coaching events or their playing events.

Current Training: I ride and run almost every day. I get to the pool about two times a week. I am currently working on speed work to get ready for a sprint tri I am doing in Febriuary. After that I will transition to longer workouts to get ready for the full iron distance tri I am doing in September.

Race History: I have done a couple of sprint distance tri's the past 18 months. I have ran several road races ranging from 5k's to half-marathons to a full marathon.

2011 Races: February sprint tri
May full marathon
September full iron tri
October 5k
November full marathon

Weight loss: Do not need to lose any weight. I need help on adding muscle tone that will translate into triathlon success.

My big question is about style, brand, and cost of bike needed to be successful. In the sprint tri I did last fall. I was in the top ten comming out of the water. I was riding a borrowed bike and other contestants were passing me like I was peddeling a tricycle in mud. I started watching their cadences and I was pedeling as fast as they were yet they were going faster. I am looking to buy a bike to ride in the full iron tri and want some advice as what to look for.
Thanks

Thanks so much for letting me join the group. Heres a small bio.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone and helping each other along in training.

Name: Randy

Story: I was a Division I college baseball player. I pitched at Texas Tech and was drafted by the New York Yankees. Some injuries kept me from playing anymore so now I am a teacher and a coach. I love baseball, but this time of year is extremly stressful and busy and it is sometimes hard to find time to train. I was a 3x district champion is cross country in high school and have always been a pretty strong runner. During college I found an OLD schwinn in an alley by a dumpster and made it my own. I rode that thing until the wheels literally feel off. When I finally bought a new bike the idea for triathlon popped into my mind! Swimming is by far my weakest link, but I do have a friend who was a collegiate swimmer and he has been helping me a little bit lately.

Family Status: I have been married for almost 4 years. I have a 2 year old little girl named Zeta and I have a son who is due the last week of February. (Great timing right at the start of baseball season.)

Current Training: Following the 27 week to a HIM from Training Plans for Miltisport Triathlete. It is going pretty well, except I dont really have anyone will to get up at 4:30 to train with me on a consistant basis.

Race History: I have done a handful of sprints and 2 HIM races. I have never actaully trained for a race though. I have just showed up and competed. I hope this year will be different as I have commited to training and feel like I am getting much faster.

2011 Races: May- Doghouse Sprint Tri
June- Buffalo Springs Lake 70.3
Will add a couple late season races. Probably at least one dualathlon.

Weight loss: Sitting at about 6'2" and 190 pounds. I would love to be down around 185 by may.

The great bike debate.

First, I guess one should define "success".  But, basically, you want a bike that "fits" and allows you to ride as comfortably aero as you can.  Brand is not important.  And you can spend a wide range of money depending on what you want.  Most people can get all the bike they "need" for under $3k.  And even that can be slashed pretty heavily if you make a few (small) concessions--none that would prevent you from being successful by most people's definition.  You can be successful on a road bike or tri bike but, in either case, you are likely to want some aero bars on it.

The best advice I can give to you is probably to try to find a fitter in your area (through other triathletes or roadies, maybe?) that can help guide you to some bikes that would work for you.  This may involve paying them just for the fitting and then going to buy the bike separately (not all fitters will do this, but most good ones will).  That may raise your up-front cost, but might prove a savings in the long run.

Of course, you have to ride a lot in order to be successful.

Name:  Jim

Bio:  I am divorced, have 2 teenage boys and they are my top priority.  I work in the medical field and often have schedules varying with a week of nights, a week of afternoons, but mostly days.  I have been doing triathlons since 2003.  I was never an athlete in highschool and consider myself a late bloomer, perhaps mid-life crisis as well (Now 45 years old).  To date I have completed half a dozen marathons, and 7 Ironmans, and other smaller distance races. I love the challenge and preparation for long course races.  This is what draws me to your group.
I love to train!  The race itself is just the icing on the cake.  I love everything there is about triathlons.  I consider my self in transition between BOP and MOP and am proud to have gotten this far.  I do believe I will continue to improve on my times with the right guidance.
I have been a member of BT for many years but usually just lurk and learn from others.  Now I would like to expand my horizons and share with others.  I am competing in IM Texas and IM Louisville this year.  I am currently on my 13th week of the Don Fink competetive plan for Texas.
If there is still room I would love to be in your group.

Would love to join the group.  Please note, while I am a professional endurance coach, I am currently 100% full so my motivation for joining this group is simply (1) to continue to surround myself with like minded athletes and (2) because I have much respect for JohnnyKay.

NAME: Steve

STORY: Joined BT in 2004.  Turning 41 in July.  Currently taking a little hiatus from serious triathlon racing in 2010 and 2011 to focus on family.  Prior military, graduated jump school back on my 20th birthday.  Am emphatic about getting those around me to face their fears and embrace what makes them truly uncomfortable so they can realize that a "no limits" attitude is possible.  Live by my self-coined motto of:  "You have not tasted success until you have succeeded at something you truly thought not possible."  In this sport, I've always been more interested in getting myself to the point of REALLY REALLY wanting to quit (in training and racing) and then once there do two things (1) observe how I react at that point and (2) stay there and continue to develop the skills to continue past that point.

FAMILY STATUS: Married for 12 years to the most amazing and beautiful woman in the world (non-athlete spouse).  Son who is 4 and newborn coming next week.

CURRENT TRAINING: Focusing mostly on time efficient workouts and building strength/functional fitness right now.  Primarily focused on the bike during the off season using my computrainer and ergvideos.  I am obsessed with pushing the limits and exploring how our mind is truly the thing that sets our "perceived" physical limits.

RACE HISTORY: Began triathon racing in summer of 1996.  Since then have done distances from sprint to full Ironman races.  Also did a few 24 hour adventure races several years ago.  My current triathlon racing peaked in 2008 with two Ironman races.  Did Racine 70.3 in 2010 with no training...just participated it to be with friends.

2011 RACES:  With the newborn coming into our lives this year, not sure yet.  Might run a half marathon and full marathon in 2011 and Racine 70.3 again but will decide last minute.

WEIGHT LOSS: Have always been active so this has never become an issue.  When I'm depressed or stressed I don't eat to feel better but rather I go for a ride or run.

Jim & Steve, you are welcome to join!  I think its great that we have a mix of experience in the group.

At this point, I think we'll close up to new members though.  Might have some more time to post some ideas later after I dig out of the latest snow.

Yeah, you can copy that link Steve gave you into you log--either in the top portion you can edit, or along the right side under "links".  I'll also pull together a list of everyone and post it this evening or tomorrow morning to make it easier to add members of the group into your "friends" list in the log (or could also do it in that top box again where you can pretty much put whatever info you'd like).

And I of them.  I remember following Steve's journey to his first IM (IMMoo) back when I was still relatively new to this site.  I learned a lot from him.

And, I still remember parts of that race report Mr. Rock Star.
