IMLP is right at 6000ft if looking for a comparison. IMO, MT is perfect for a tri bike as we can make up significant time on the downhills.davinius - 2011-06-18 6:52 PM I'm in! My first IM and I'm kind of freaking out. I'm already bike shopping for the event. Thinking about a Cervelo S2 to handle the hills. Anyone have any opinions?
You'll likely get some varied opinions on this. For me, the answer is always my tri bike no matter how hilly the race is. I don't know what your situation is and your future IM plans, etc. so it's possible a road bike makes better sense for you. |

There has been some discussion about the bike course on ST and I haven't seen anything that makes me think road bike over tri bike. No mention of the descents being really technical - just fast! |

It shows an elevation gain of 1000m/ 3200 feet. Dunno how accurate that route is. |

I plan on using it but I am very happy that I switched out the gearing that came with it, to something with lower gears for the hills. I am positive that there will be a lot of discussion on this over the next year. |

Master 1410 White Plains NY | Subject: RE: Ironman Mont-Tremblant : Official Thread I am heading up this Fall @ some point to do some course recon. I will have Placid's course in the back of my mind as comparison the entire time. Looks like this course has shorter, but steeper climbs? VS Placid's long but steadier climbs. Will find out for sure! |

Veteran 361 Colorful Colorado | Subject: RE: Ironman Mont-Tremblant : Official Thread I'll be riding my P2C (although I have to think about what gearing to use). A TT bike can really pick up some time on downhills and flats as long as the downhills aren't extremely curvy. |

No worries, I would've added more details but I haven't looked at this in a while and my ability to talk on gearing was already pretty basic. In addition, I think later P2s may actually have different cassettes than the one that I have. I have a 2009 Cervelo P2 and it had pretty high gearing, which is fine if you are riding the flats. But for Wisconsin, I had concerns about toasting my legs on the hills, and then trying to run a marathon. So I ended up getting a cassette from a buddy which had much lower gears (aka granny gears), so I could take it easier on the hills. I lost one of the higher gears, but I think I gained two lower gears. I may have gone from a 11-23 to a 12-27 front cassette, but I would have to check to make sure, if it matters. I did a quick google and saw a 2011 P2 pop up had a 12-25 cassette, so maybe the newer ones are not as bad as mine was. I dunno. Edited by kalalau 2011-06-25 9:06 PM |

It also depends whether or not you have compact cranks or not and I believe new Cervelo P2 with a standard build will be 50/34 on the front and 12-25 on the back. That should be fine on most any course (also depends on your fitness of course) but you could go 12-27 and possibly 11-28 if you really wanted. I've done every one of my IMs to date including hillier ones than IM MT on a conventional crank, 53/39, and I just switched to a compact which I'm really enjoying. Wish I had gone compact years ago. |

Veteran 249 | Subject: RE: Ironman Mont-Tremblant : Official Thread I did IMWI on 53/39 up front and 12/27 out back. Trained all summer on the same set-up. For IMMT I plan to train all summer on 53/39 and 11/23 and then race on 50/34 and 12/27. Want to give my legs the best possible chance to survive the ride and be ready to run. robert |
