DeannaS - 2011-09-12 7:11 AM Wow that's pricey. I think I'm practically priced out of halves these days. Lame.

No kidding...  oh well, local, fun and inexpensive races for me next year!

Compared to what?  Doing an M-dot half, it's a third the cost.  And from what I hear the Rev 3 races are just as good, if not better than the M-dot experience.

Got this one on the radar for sure, if I can get over my fear of hills.  Sounds like there's plenty.

Climbinggonzo - I am already registered for this one. Going to make it a family vacation as well.  Should be a fun race.

An Ironman 70.3 event isn't 3 times more expensive than a Rev 3 Half.  Did I not understand that post correctly?  In any case, just to clarify:

Rev 3 Dells Half Rev before 6/30 = $250

Ironman Racine 70.3 before 4/16 = $225

My brother-in-law and I are considering this race.  Do you guys know if Lake Delton will be a wetsuit legal race?  I'm o.k. without a wetsuit but my bil may be a bit nervous if it's not.  Thanks guys.

Looks like an awesome course.

I am guessing that it will NOT be wetsuit-legal. My reason for this is that the lake is very shallow all around, and with the race being in August (usually the hottest part of summer) that the lake will be well over wetsuit temps. I am sure there are records somewhere online of temps in August in the lake. Does anyone know of a link for this?

Only thing that I can find is some fishing reports from last year.

http://www.lake-link.com/Wisconsin-Fishing-Reports/report.cfm/4234/...

early July water temps are 71 - 75. Early September 66 - 70. So the 78 degree limit is possible, but I don't think it will be over the 84 degree limit

Just saw on the Rev3 website that they changed the bike course. We now have more climbs.

Also there is a video of the bike route that you can watch. IMHO it does not do justice to the hills they are bigger in person.

I rode this course today and thought I would give a report for folks that may not have ridden it yet.

First off, it's a lot of hills!! The first hills start off pretty quick; the first descent climb is with in the first 3 miles. Then the rest of the route to Baraboo is just a few rollers. There's a few turns in Barboo, but nothing too serious. You ride along the Baraboo River for a little bit which is kind of nice (unless you're a hammer-head, then you may not notice). Then there is another shorter but steep climb.

Shortly after that you get to hwy DL right by Devils Lake. You take the left and you're climbing for about a mile. This the climb that seems to go forever; you think the top is just around the curve, but nope, it keeps going.

Once at the top you go over a few rollers and then come out and take a right on DL/113. This descent SCREAMS!! I looked at my Garmin when I got home and max speed was 52.1 mph!

Next you go along DL to Bluff Rd. This is the longest climb. Per Strava its about a 2.1 mile climb and cat 3 all the way to the top of Tower Rd. The first half of Bluff Rd is recently chip sealed, so it could make it tricky if you're trying to pass people as it will be hard for slower people to stay right. Once to the top on Tower Rd you go down again. This is another screamer. At the beginning you can't even see the road, it just looks like it drops off. There was a kind of sharp left curve on this one; well sharp for 40+ mph.

After this you hit Hwy 78 which goes for about 5 miles. It's really nothing too exciting with some rollers.

Then you go to Belch Rd which is another longer climb but not quite as long as the other two, but seemed steeper in a couple of spots.

From there you hit hwy W then go to Hwy 33. Hwy 33 honestly makes me a bit nervous. There is a wide shoulder, but in the day of smart phones I don't trust anybody and there was quite a bit of traffic. Hopefully on race day they have signs indicating a race is in progress.

Next you turn on hwy U then to hwy T then back to hwy A. U and T have a few rollers that aren't too bad, but could get painful if you didn't pace the other hills.

Hwy A then has a final climb on the way back that seems much longer climbing than when you came down it at about mile 5.

Overall, the roads are in decent condition. Like any road in WI you get a few bad sections, but nothing terrible on this course. Certainly will be a slow ride. I did Door County HIM a few weeks ago and avg 20.6 (2:43). Today was about 3:20; that was with getting lost for about 1.5 miles and slowing to look at road signs etc. Maybe race day could be 3:10?

So, how did Rev3 do in their inaugural Dell race?  Have only seen 1 or 2 race reports, but just curious what everyone thought.  Due to location, would love to add to my short list next year.

I thought they did really well. Love the setup. Very easy for parking and getting to/from start & finish. The course is definitely a challenge. I knew this going in so really liked it. People who didn't preview were probably in for a wake-up on some of those hills, especially Bluff Rd.

There should be more posting on the Official Thread in the IM Distance Race Group section.

I did the HIM aquabike and would definitely do it again.  This was my second REV event and I think they still have some things to work out, but overall thumbs up!

I did the HIM and will for sure be back next year. I liked loved the bike course and the hills. The run was hilly, but manageable. The swim was fine, and if you are not a fan of mass starts then Rev3 is for you. I myself, would have preferred to start in waves, but it was fine. The hill up to transition was not to  horrible to run at all, and transition was very organized.  I like that Rev3 allows family to run the finisher shoot with you too!

Sounds like a winner, good location for the family and a good race.

How's the water?  IIRC correctly, it is fairly shallow and I have been there twice this summer and it looks to be clear and calm in that sheltered inlet.

Lake might be shallow, but you're swimming within a few steps of getting off the dock until you get to the finish ramp. Water quality was fine. Errant feet could be seen in time, but you can't see 10-15 ft down.

HI All,

Thinking about doing this one next year....can anyone tell us of any pet friendly rental homes/condos (preferably right on the lake)?

From an overall race perspective, how does REV3 events compare to Ironman events?

Thanks!
